Hello sea-dogs, have a query. I am presently playing 1.4 version of SH4 with no mods (waiting for SH4 Gold to come so I can then use the TMO mod) and my first mission is to pester the enemy merchant shipping around Honshu.

I spent most of the journey down to that area on the surface so over half of my fuel is already gone (game set to realistic fuel use settings). I have sent one merchant to the bottom and have now been told to pick on escorts as well, so would like to meander around for a bit and use up my remaining torps if I strike lucky, but am concerned that I might not be able to get back to PH or Midway to take on more fuel if I spend too much time hunting and would then have to abort the whole mission. In SH3, once you have got rid of your torpedoes you can instantly teleport back to base if you are too low on fuel to get back in real time. Is it the same in SH4 - or (better) is there a base I can go to within reasonable distance please?

I'm afraid there is no teleportation feature in SH4. If you are prowling off Honshu, most likely the nearest USN base is the one you departed from (either Midway or Pearl Harbor).

Did you use a speed of about 9 to 10 knots while outbound? That seems to be the most economical.

I used Standard, which is about 11 knots on my Porpoise I think :)

Oh well... serves me right - I ought to have gone into Midway on the outward leg and see if they would kindly top me up again.

Thank you Dread Knot ( luv the name :) )

There is a mod to teleport. I have never used it but I have it somewhere in my files.

I used to travel from Midway to Japan w/o using much more than ¼ tank of fuel.
http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b456/archangel501/Smileys/c5e1233e.gifOops, sorry, not that kind of fuel.http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b456/archangel501/Smileys/047d7295.gif I don't know if this may be an issue with your specific version of SHIV, but fuel economy depends upon the type of sub you're using. For example: right now, I'm in an S-Boat and get the best fuel economy at about 8.5 knots. A Porpoise Class, if I remember correctly, is somewhere around 9.5 knots. The good thing about TMO (and RFB too, I think) is that there is an icon/button you can push that will calculate your maximum range at any given speed

teleporter could be useful Irish - I will wait until I get the upgrade before I put any mods on - but will keep it in mind, thank you :)

Wernher, I shall look for that button when I get TMO :)

She-Wolf,

There is a TMO 1.4 mod that should work for you until you get you gold version. It's not v2.5, but it's better than stock! :yep:

I thought this was part of the stock game.

Until you have TMO the rule of thumb is to always travel at 2/3 speed. You'll rarely if ever have fuel problems.

thank you Hylander, noted :)

Steve - right, will tuck that one away... I did start going down to Manila to see if I could refuel there - but then the anchor icon disappeared, so I am now hunting the area for suitable prey and will worry about the fuel when I am done and want to go home.

@Sailor Steve - Am reading Cruel Sea at bedtime. :)

Worst case if you need to, go to your SH4 in My Documents.

Open the Data Folder,

Then open the CFG Folder,

Then open the GameplaySettings.cfg file.

The 4th one down the list should be LimitedFuel=true. Just change the true to false, and you should be able to get back to base, or take that Pacific cruise you always wanted to.

Hylander - what a good idea - I would never have thought of that:up:

@Sailor Steve. Just got to the bit where they lost Sorrel..

i'm new to this game, is it correct that i can only re-fuel at a anchor icon ?

BernieP2

You can only refuel at one of the "Anchor" bases. That assumes your playing the game withthe realistic fuel box checked on the Options - Game Play menu. If you don't the fuel will last forever. You can also get reloads of torpedoes and deck gun ammunition at any "Anchor" bases.

The tilted anchor is your home base and you can get refitted there if you took battle damage. The other bases will only give fuel and ammo.

Hope that helps.

BTW in TMO the most fuel efficient speed is 'Standard" which is historically accurate. (Thanks again Ducimus!).

that is Maisie - A German Shepherd Dog ( Deutscher Schaferhund). She was ( and is) our beloved dog but we lost her to cancer when she was six years old, about three and a half years ago now.

I'm an avid dog lover myself.http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b456/archangel501/Smileys/6ef7e0fa.gif
I was devastated after my last dog passed away. They truly become full fledged family members and their passing is no less mournful. Three colleagues of mine all had German Shepherd dogs and all three died of cancer. That seems to be an illness peculiar to that breed.
The best thing to do is to get another dog. I swore I never would, but I ended up getting a Shepherd mix breed, rescued from an animal shelter.
I have to admit that I'm glad I did.

Awe, that sucks

I know, I used to raise service dogs for the blind and handicapped. We got a beautiful jetblack Shephard that was said to be a problem dog. He was friendly as any retriever was, and had a great temperment and personality.

What we found out though from observing him, is he was getting seizures, which caused him to turn Mr. Hyde for 1 to 2 minutes, and then they would stop. And once he came out of them, he would be utterly disoriented, and scared, and I would take up to 15 minutes to calm him down, as they frightened him badly.

Of course he was dropped from the program, but a sweet elderly lady took him, and he lived for about 4 years, but after a couple years, you could see the fits were poorly affecting his brain.

But now I have my own pooch, a 5 and 1/2 year old Lab Retriever, who isn't quite black, or chocolate. He's like the color of a dark roasted coffee bean. A real Ferdinand the Bull kinda guy. We did wilderness search and rescue out west in the Rockies, before I had to move back to the Great Lakes area. So now he enjoys going fishing on the boat, but he doesn't like Northern Pike fresh off the hook. They have teeth too! And sharp to boot!

Werner, about six months ago, we too finally 'caved in' to the idea of getting another dog (though Maisie is still loved of course)and two months ago received the company of a bi-colour ten year old GSD bitch who needed to be retired from her working life as a guide dog for the blind in Glasgow, Scotland (I guess you will relate to that Hylander).

I wasn't sure we would be able to pick up on the reponsibilities of 'dog-ownering' again, having lapsed into a sedentary but well-occupied lifestyle - but we are coping and she is an endearing sweetie.

She is on medication for arthritis and we have to manage her walks carefully as she thinks she is still three years old and wants to rush after thrown sticks and balls all the time - but we are getting the idea. Dogs is lovely.:D

Hello all skippers. I am a little new trying to complete my first mission from pearl harbor with gar sub and optical targeting correction, OTC has an icon you can click for range at speed. I have dropped of my informant, radio base they tell me to patrol south china sea, steam down sink a few ships mission complete but now my range will not take me back to midway even though I have over a half tank? Im confused I came over on 2/3 speed refueled at midway and had only burned a quarter tank on the way, yet a half tank wont take me back is it the winds or rough seas, or is it an east to west current, I dont think Ive even been shot at so its not like im hulled and losing fuel, should I wait for calmer seas what? kinda confused why I made it here on less than half tank even with all my hunting but cant get back. maybe the coding for the otc range icon is wrong? dont think so pretty sure im gonna run out based on trying to get back and not making it before reverting to older save Thanks for any advise :shifty:

P.S. I know how to go in and change fuel to false in cnfg file and get home by cheating but was kinda hoping to not have to do that. Thanks again

I've seen radically different range estimates based on the current weather. Are you currently in a storm with heavy seas? If so, wait until the weather changes to calm and click the icon again. I'll bet you have more than enough to get back then.

Vaux is right, range is based on the current weather/engine settings. Half a tank of fuel should get you back to Midway using 2/3's power.

Also, you should wait until the speed has reached epuillibrium. If you change speed and check range immediately, you will not get an accurate result.

Thanks for quick reply seems like an awsome community, anyway you were right I was in a storm before, plus I noticed range goes way down when charging batteries, duh never considered that, still not sure y I ran out last time but made it this time and got a medal! thanks for all the help!

Happy to help! :salute: Range estimates are, after all, estimates, and there's a lot of variables that go into calculating them, many of which can change several times a day! After a while, you'll get a feel for how far you can roam until you have to RTB or risk empty fuel tanks.

Welcome aboard, and SINK 'EM ALL!!!! :arrgh!:

Figured out my charge batteries button was staying on, it would charge to 99% then just stay there all the way across the pacific and run me out of fuel. Not sure what was causing it manually clicking it off works fine but definitly something to watch out for.

It's an old bug, and one that has never been solved. You just have to remember it's there and keep an eye on it.

Strange, I never experience that. I thought this only occured when you had damage to the batteries.
