View Full Version : About fuel usage

I play stock 1.5 and I have read where some run out of fuel.

I can say for a fact that if you get holed sometimes it will cause fuel to leak.

Once a tanker surprised me coming out of a fog bank and hit me with a well-aimed shot. I lost half my fuel--quick. It was late in the war, so I made it to a gas station, they filled up my tanks, and right away my fuel level dropped down to half a tank. I had to hit every stop on the way to refuel but I was lucky to make it back to base.

I think planes or ships can do it also with their smaller weapons although not such a massive loss, but enough to cause you possibly not to make it home.

Haven't tried mods, can't figure on how to install them, but I have been through 7 wars in stock and this has happened 3 times in all.

Something to consider.

Yes, that would certainly be bad news. It would be even worse in RL, since you would be leaving an oil slick wherever you went.

It's definitely time to install some mods. It's not that hard at all either. Just DL JSGME and install it into your SHIV root folder. It should create it's own "Mods" folder, but if it doesn't, create one yourself. Then, unzip any mods into that "Mods" folder and then start up JSGME. You'll see the mods in the JSGME left side panel. Select the mods and use the arrow arrow button to install them into the JSGME right side panel. Voila, you're finished and ready to play with mods.

I have tried to do that but I am not doing something right.

How do I start the game? Do I still need my disk in my computer? Can I make a shortcut?

Believe me, I want to try out the mods but I know little about computers.

I am old. I remember AM radio. Rabbit ears on the TV--black and white at that.

I need a course for apes to understand, all these buttons and stuff!!

DL ? What's that? Root Folder?? What?? Unzip any mods?? Huh?? How do I start up JSGME and what is it anyway? I have it installed from way back but where it went I have no idea.

Oh well, at least stock sure beats pinball, remember those?

Well, no use in being snippy, dude.

I wasn't raised on computers.

Everything I know about them I taught myself, and I know many things about other areas you probably don't know about. So there.

Now that you got that off your chest, take a deep breath and go here; http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/products-jsgme.html
and get the tool you'll need to install MODs. Read the documentation that comes with it and get started. Then come back here with more specific questions if you have difficulties. The guys/gals on this forum are most helpful as I can attest as they brought me along from a newbie over two years ago. You got your hands on a great game and the MODs make it even better.

I must offer an apology for my outburst, yet to me it was uncalled for.

But moving on, I thank you for your help. I am sure I have done most things correctly, I have probably left out a small step or two.

I will give it another go.

I thank you for your help, and thanks for the link.

I was, instead, frustrated. My typing skills aren't nearly even considered average and the thought of typing out a long explanation was too daunting.
I taught myself everything I know about computers too. As far as knowing more than me about other things, well, join the club. Most people know more about other things than I do. I still haven't (exactly) figured out what it is that I do know.http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b456/archangel501/Smileys/c1f440e4.gif

Trust me, when I am trying to be snippy, there will be no doubt about it.

Breadcatcher,

You can, if you run out of fuel from damage, or not paying attention to remaining fuel, and distance needed to travel, do a little cheat. Especially since the stock game doesn't have any way to facilitate refueling aside from going to your home port.

Save the game at your present point.

Exit the game.

Go to My Documents, (should be a desktop icon), or accessible through the Start Menu.

In My Documents, look for the SH4 Folder, and double click it to open the folder.

Next, double click the Data Folder.

Next, double click the CFG Folder.

Next, double click the SaveGames Folder.

There will be anywhere from one to a multiple list of folders in there with a bunch of 0s and a last number of higher value. The one you want, is the last one in the list, as it is yor most recent saved game.

Double click that folder. (the most recent save)

In there the file you want, is the GameplaySettings.cfg file. Double click to open it. You may get a message from windows to choose a program to open the file, just use Notepad, or Wordpad from the list. Whichever you prefer. There is also a little checkbox asking if you want to use that program to open all files like it on your computer. You can either leave it empty, or click the box to check it. Whatever you wish.

Close to the top, you will find LimitedFuel=(either True or False will be after the = sign). If it says True, just erase the word True, and type in the word False. Save the change, by clicking on the File button to the top left, and click save, or just close the file, the X on the top right, and click save when it asks you what you want to do.

Restart your game, and go home.

Would be nice, if you could radio for a tow from a close passing ship, or another sub, but that wasn't added in there.

One thing to consider, with the supermods, as the war progresses, at least in TMO, when the Americans start to advance in the island hopping campaigns to regain the Pacific, you will see little icons on the map pop up in bays and harbors. You can refuel at these locations, and rearm. If your boat has little to damage, and you want to go back out for more, you can. If your boat really neds to go back for extensive repairs, you can do that.

One thing to, is if you do have damage to your batteries, go to your ingame menu bar, accross the bottom of the screen, there are icons to the leftside. The one in the corner, first one on the left, is the captain's icon. Make sure that the batteries aren't set to recharge. This will keep you from burning up fuel unecessarily. Once the batteries are repaired, you can reset it to charge them. Especially if in Japanese waters.

If in friendly waters, it's not a worry. Friendly planes won't indiscriminantly attack you, like their RL counterparts would. Same with friendly warships.

If the repairs for the batteries don't work, or are taking a long time in enemy waters, turn off the recharge icon. Set a crewman to the AA gun(s), and be prepared to do a lot of dodging of aircraft. Use your fuel on the surface as economically as possible, but when planes show up, go to flank speed, and wait for them to start their dive on you. Try to keep to one side ot the other, so you can turn into them, hard left or right rudder. Your relatively quick speed with tight turning ability make you a very difficult target to hit. Best thing, is to save if you pick up a plane on radar, incase you need to practice it.

Hope this helps! I tried to explain it as simply as possible. I too leearned most everything on my own too, and now I know enough to be really dangerous to software and hardware. :D Well, until I figure out what does what.

Well jldjs, thanks to your link I have now installed Jsgme.

I don't have any mods yet, I have heard of quite a bit of them in reading here and am not sure which to use. Can I install more than one?

I'll try to find them and figure out how to install, about all I play is SH4, I have SH3, but I had rather sink Japanese.

Is there an RFB mod? I have also heard of steam, and the one where the Japanese run the slot.

I also heard the destroyers are not as polite as in stock.

I really appreciate your help.

My path to using MODs started with TMOwTw v1.7. It gives you the eye candy of TMO but the tameness of stock. Got alot of learning on this one . Then the switch to TMO was easier. Follow the threads on this forum and others and you'll learn about other MODs. RSRDC is a great addition to TMO for realism onslme the Pacific battles. FOTRS is also good and easier than TMO. Never tried RFB, but will when I tire of these, though I haven't yet in two years.

Well, I installed JSGME, choose the desktop icon, now I have that, has a large letter "G", and also another folder icon with a gear symbol on it called JSGME.
Installed RSRDC, guess it went to a temp folder, I'll find it, tried to paste the link to the JSGME folder but it wouldn't take.

There is aslo a blank folder called MODS.

I hope I am on the right track, I'm working on it.

Many thanks, guys.

Many thanks, guys.Where did that gear symbol appear? It should not be on your desktop, but in your SHIV root folder. The "SHIV Root" is the base folder where SHIV is installed on your system. The "Mods" folder should also be in your SHIV root folder. It is in this "Mods" folder that you should place the RSRDC folder. When your Zip utility appears, a dialog window should also show up that asks where you want to unzip the folder to. Click on the "Browse" button (in your Zip utility) and choose "Desktop", then cut and paste the file into your "Mods" folder.

When installing JSGME, make sure you direct it to the game folder.

So if you were to go to your SH4 directory on your hard drive, and open the SH4 folder, JSGME components will be in that folder, including the MODS folder.

It's okay if you missed. We've all done it.

If you have to, just delete it, and start again.

When in the Setup window of JSGME, you will get to, ............ should be the 4th page of the process, where you choose your installation destination.

The automatic destination is not what you want. Whatever that may be.

Instead, to the right of the box you should see a button that says Browse... Click it.

It will open another window so you can navigate to your SH$ game directory folder.

Mine wants to automatically install it into my Downloads folder, which won't do me any good.

On the right side of the window is a slider so you can move up and down in the window, if you have a bunch of junk like I do.

As an example, it wanted to automatically load JSGME onto my C drive, but I have a second hard drive where I keep my games and other stuff.

I have a folder on the D Drive (my second drive) called Games, and that is where SH4 is located, so in the Browse window mentioned above, I go to Local Disk [D:], and click it twice.

It shows my Games Folder and a few others I have on the drive.

I double click the Games folder, which opens up and shows all the games I have on the drive.

I go to my SH4 folder and double click, then click on the OK button at the bottom of the window.

That should close that window, and your new SH4 destination should show up in the Installation window.

Click next at the bottom, and if you want to create a desktop icon, leave the box checked. I don't like a lot of desktop icons, so I always un-check the box personally, and just go to the game folder to use JSGME.

After you decide, click the next button. It should give you some info similar to this, but with "your" destination info in it.

Destination location:
D:\Games\Silent Hunter IV --------- This is how I have SH4 loaded on my computer. Yours will be different for location, and what you named it.

Click the install button, and let it load.

If you have other games like SH3, you can install it into that one too.

I also have a couple flight sims that the modders are now orienting their mods to use JSGME too. So if you do have other games you play and there are mods for them, check if they are set up for use with it, as it makes installing and removing mods from games very easy to say the least.

Always go into your programs, find what you want to delete and choose the program's own "Uninstall" utility. Either that or go into your PC Control Panel, choose the "Add/Remove Programs" utility and uninstall it from there. Just be sure to carefully, and slowly, read through these things. Oh yeah! Good point! In the early days of my learning, I don't know how many times I did just that, as I was in a rush, and made a mistake, and had to start all over again from the beginning.

At least now though, with computers being faster, it's not like the old 486, or P3 days, when it took up to 30 minutes just for a game to install.

Yeah, deleting porgrams is the fun part. Trying to figure if it is needed for something else.

I love it when it asks "are you sure?"

Heck no, I am not sure! Who do you think I am--Bill Gates??"

I just keep them in the recycle bin and see if all else seems to work.

If my computer starts using language from mars or the like I have done something wrong.

Learned a long time back deleting the icons doesn't delete the programs.

I am better than I used to be at least.

I think I am starting to understand how to install mods thanks to you guys.

I can still play stock if I like though, even with mods installed?

Hylander_1314

Glad you got it figured out! Hope we didn't confuse you too much!

You can if you use MultiSh4, which allows you to have more than one installation of the game.

Honestly though, I wouldn't use anything less than the Game Fixes Only mod, since the original was so darn buggy, and some of the stuff was just way off as to historical accuracy.

Honestly though, once you have one of the supermods installed for it, and find the one you like, you might do like the rest of us, and never go back to stock.

But since stock is what you are used to, the GFO mod might be the ticket to start with. And you may be completely happy with just that.

But if you feel the need to, you can try one of the other supermods at your choice. Leave yourself open to options. TMO tries to balance accuracy with gameplay.

FOTRS is based on TMO, but went off on it's own direction, and has added more shiptypes and planes.

RFB has done the best it can to make it a challenge by turning off a lot of the automatic stuff, and tweaking things that fit their style of play.

And if you want more historical accuracy, the Run Silent Run Deep mod adds historical shipping so that early in the war, you will have tons of merchants and task forces to keep you busy, but b the end of the war, you will like the real subs, mainly be using your deckgun to take out fishing boats and sampans.

It is compatable with TMO and RFB, so it can be added over them without causing any ill sided effects.

So there are many options to choose from.

If you're into it, there is a radio station mod that plays old time radio programs, and there is music too from the period you can listen to. Kinda cool to tune in to AFR from Midway or Honolulu, or Austrailia, or pick up radio Tokyo and hear Tokyo Rose broadcasting.

I can still play stock if I like though, even with mods installed?

By definition, if you any have mods installed you are not playing stock, but the beauty of JSGME is that you can easily remove the mods if you want to play stock again - or if you want to try a different mod.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but if you are playing a career, you should only install mods when your boat is in harbour - in between patrols. Otherwise the game may crash, or your saved games may become unusable (or "corrupted" in geek-speak).

If you are installing a super-mod (the huge ones, TMO, RFB, FOTRS, & RSRD being the chief Super-mods for the Pacific), then you should also start a new career - for the same reasons.
