Hello all. have just installed SH4 again after many moons, on to my 64bit Windows 7 machine and had no problems with that and have cheerfully tootled off to the Marshall Islands to prey on enemy merchants - but not a soul is about and I have no idea where to look for likely targets. Had a look in Downloads on here and I see that there are mods for maps, but all I can find in SH4 in the standard game is navigation - no edges of shipping charts peeping from any corners - does it not come with anything else please?

Also, in SH3 we had ( a helpful mod I think) a handy compass wheel that would pop out from the side when you went on the chart. Is there an equivalent for SH4 please? I would get the one from SH3 but cannot remember what it might be called.
Ta muchly

Here are a couple maps (for TMO and RSRDC):

I'm not sure which others there are or which would be 'best'. Keep in mind shipping traffic will vary according to what mods you are using and what time period you're in. Stock game traffic is said to be much more random.

There is no in game 'whiz-wheel', unfortunately. There are some in the downloads section that can be printed out for this purpose. Cap'n Scurvy has one and there might be others.

Here is a few different versions of the 'Is - Was' as the USN called it:

In TMO if you select the radio from the misc menu, a shipping route map is located with it. Just click and drag it out.

TMO = Trigger Maru (Overhauled) mod by Ducimius. Currently the most up-to-date megamod for Pacific theater in SH4, geared mostly towards challenging experienced sub sim players and fleshing out features of the game: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=132330

Also, sorry you got sent to the Marshalls! It's always pretty dead there. It was always a strategic backwater from the Japanese perspective, so you will never see convoys, large combat units, or indeed even frequent merchants there in any SH4 version.

Your nearest major hunting ground from there would be around the big Japanese base at Truk.

CCIP - ah right! TMO sounds to SH4 what GWX is to SH3 - I GOTTA have a piece of that then!

If I sneak off from my given task will I be condemned to scrubbing decks when I (eventually) get back to base? In SH3 you can do what you want after you have completed your 24 hour patrol area ( and even then nothing is said if you snuk off early, or didn't even get there). Truk, here I come...:salute:

no I don't - have to start anew after updating.

Don't worry about sneaking off of your patrol area. While you get points for completing objectives, there is no penalty for not doing so. Sinking ships is the biggest thing in getting points. (I guess it is pretty much the same as SH 3; it's really up to you how you want to play.) If you send back status reports, you usually get new orders, so if don't want any specific orders, just maintain radio silence. ;)

Maintaining radio silence was the norm anyways, unless command was trying to raise a specific boat. And even then, I would be apprehensive of giving away the boats position in Empire waters.

Gotcha Torpx, thanks. I am twiddling my thumbs now as have ordered a Gold copy of the game so I can use the TMO mod, and am keen to have a go.:yep:

One thing TMO lets you do, is take your boat way passed the redline test depth. Just how far? You'll have to find out for yourself. But I have had a balao boat close to 700ft down. The hull creaked and growned worse than a wooden keg of beer left out in the sun on a summer day too!
