Ahoy mates, welcome to Subsim.

Happy New Year !

I heard about subsim.com while googling on SH5 and instantly became a member and made my donation.

Since then, I have enjoyed a number of great MODs including:

TDW's Magnun Opus/IRAI/NewUIs/etc, Trevally's tutorials/automated scripts/Harbor Pilot, Manos Scopes just to mention a few.

Currently I'm interested in Zedi's and Trevally's Open Horizon's II mod.

Thanks SUBSIM and contributors for such amazing MOD's, tips and recommendations. Without all this, SH5 would not be that much interesting.

Hey hey!

Hmm some background info...lets see here... my last and only sub sim was oh boy :hmmm: *enters time machine* Silent Service for the Atari ST :yeah: I was probably 10 years old and it was a blast.

Finally got a decent computer and decided it was time to go on the hunt again. I have Silent Hunter III in hand and am looking for the full realism experience. Just finished watching OLC's Video Tutorials on manual targeting and I'm pumped.

Now I just need to wade through all the mods.. boy there is a ton of em :D

I have been registered a long time, but I had never been to the forums to post before.

I used to play 688(i) but I got bored with it since all of the missions were strictly scripted. I had heard about Silent Hunter's dynamic campaign mode and it sounded interesting, so I picked it up a long time ago and then, for whatever reason, I never really played it. I recently pulled it off the shelf, blew off the dust and installed it again.

The process to put together a firing solution is enough different that I went out hunting a tutorial, which I found in the downloads section here. However, when I try to download it I am told "You have exceeded your daily allowed download amount" of "up to 3 files a day" even though it may have been over a year since I was last here and downloaded anything.

Anyways, it links me here, and tells me my download limit will increase if I make a post, so here I am!

Ahoy there! As an avid WWII history fan I also fly Il2 and belong to the wonderful Il2 community at SAS. When I recently got into SH3 and SH4 it was fascinating to see the conflict from another perspective. I wondered if there was an equivalent to SAS for the Silent Hunter Series.

There is! So glad to find you guys after a little research. My standard spec SH3 and SH4 were quickly transformed with more polished menus, missions, sounds, models, the works, what a great group.

For over 25 years now, from when the internet was made of wood, I have always regarded true 'Simmers' as a superior breed to mere 'Gamers'. The members here clearly illustrate a devotion to detail and a consuming interest that are the hallmarks of a great sim community.

I have many more games than time to play them but my time over the last year plus has been used on Scourge of War, SH3, and Hearts of Iron.

Greetings to all of you!
I am a new member of this community. I play SH3 and recently a friend of mine showed me the essence of gameplay - the real adventure - realism. I was totally fascinated, it was so touching that i dont have words to explain what kind of shouts i did when i first sunk the C2 cargo in the torpedo tutorial...anyway i started to read everything about this game and i found that most of the time i spend on that topic, i spend it here. Of course the great download section was the second reason. So i decided to register.
Nice to meet you! Best regards! :)

Hello all.

I'm a long-time SH3 player; mostly vanilla, but occasionally lightly modded. Now I'm a new SH5 player (just finished the tutorial mission) and am looking into the plethora of mods available (and apparently required) for said. I have lurked on these forums for quite a few years, but only recentlly signed up.

I play sims, FPS titles, indie titles, space-related titles and RTS titles. I make models when I get around to staking out the time for it and have a few projects going presently (including a 1/144 Type VIIC). I read a lot of History which tends to orbit the Migration Era/Dark Ages period. I used to make and manage the production of artwork for titles in the FS and CFS range of sims, but since the dissolution of the studio, I have left that profession almost completely behind me and now do very little in the way of that kind of work (except for the great enjoyment I still get customizing my own game assets - which I can't really resist doing). I am trying to teach myself Blacksmithing, since sadly, we no longer employ the apprenticeship model to train new tradesmen/craftsmen. I live in Seattle. I am very happily married and have two great kids; a boy of three-an-a-half years and a girl of three-and-a-half months. And my real name is Aaron.

Sorry, OLDIE/newbie here.
Have ALWAYS played PC wargames (Total Annihilation , Supreme
Commander , Harpoon (old versions) , old GNB and SH1 (i think?)
etc. etc).
And recently Other Half bought me the latest Harpoon Multi-Pack
so I'm reliving old-days

Been watching Pacific War movies lately so got a yearning for Carrier
type game (Carriers at War ?!?)
and watching Crimson Tide / WW2/Cold War Sub films got me thinking
I'd like newer (?) better (??) version of SH1.

QUICK question (I'll troll the site for indepth opinions !!) . . .
Which version runs (best?) on XP Home Edition ? SH3,4, or 5 ??
Also I'm on a WAS-Fairly-good-2-years-ago-PC so will 4/5 run
OK or are they TOO good if you know what I mean ??

If it's not a rude question, what other Ship/Sub sims are OK on
XP Home Edition ???:zzz::zzz::zzz:

SORRY

NO! TOO MANY STEVES!

Oops. I mean WELCOME ABOARD / BACK! :sunny:

I can't help you with the other type games, but SH3, 4 and 5 will all run on XP Home (that's what I have as well). The problem is more likely to be system management. For best results overall you need at least a dual-core system, at least 4 GIGS of RAM (8 is best for SH5) and at least a 512 MB independent graphics card (1GB is best, and onboard graphics are right out).

That said, I'm still working with a seven-year-old single-core system, and it runs SH3 and SH4 pretty well and SH5 barely. The first two are alright as long as I don't apply too many big mods, meaning graphics-intensive ones like FM New Interiors. If your system is even close to what I described above you should be alright.

FatSteve
01-14-12, 12:23 PM
Thanks S'S' !

Luv a quick reply on a new forum . . . makes it feel REAL ?!

errr, It's a Dell Intel Quad Core 2 @ 2.33GHz ?!?!? (from the SYSTEM thing in Control Panel !)
4GB RAM

Graphics ARE onboard, but, I had to put my old nVidia card in to run Supreme Commander !! =
GeForce 6610XL 800MHz 128-bit 1599MB total 128MB GDDR3 dedicated (??)
I thought it was a 1GB card, but I don't know now from that !

I know a LITTLE but not the nitty-gritty stuff (dangerous, I know:nope:)

I think, as you say, as long as they all RUN then SH5 may be wishfull,
SH4 smoother, and SH3 best if a little older ???

Fat-"getting-more-interested"-Steve

SORRY, WHERE SHOULD I CARRY ON ASKING THESE BEGINNER
QUESTIONS ???????????????????????????
[obviously not here !!!]

Hello all.
My first post to Subsim forums although I have been a member since August 2009.

I am British male 53 years old. I have been playing subsim games since 1987 when I got my first copy of Silent Hunter for an old AMSTRAD 6128 home computer (which is STILL working as a solid but basic typewriter for my dad).
Over the years I have upgraded machines but have stuck with subsim games. I'm now running Silent Hunter 3 on a SEMPRON 1.25GB, 256MB ATI graphics card and 300GB HDD, Windows XP Pro machine. Absolutely fine for my needs.

I am here because I am going to attempt some MODS for the first time for SH3.
I must admit to suffering some confusion as to which MODS are needed and the order in which to apply them. I am sure I am not alone as there are now so many MODS from a vast supply of moders. I will take my time reading through the forums to find what works for me. I appreciate the fact that no single guru can probably put together a truly authorative list of what MOD to apply and in what order. Time for me to have a play and see what happens.

I will keep a good set of records and notes of my trials and errors and I may return to the forums and post my findings. No guarantee.

Many thanks to all who have posted before me.

Hello all,

I have been a lurker for a couple of years now and have enjoyed the efforts of your great community. I thought that it was time to tell you all thanks and keep up the great work!

I have to run back to sh4 - my S-27 is lurking about Rabaul in August 1942 and I feel that I might get lucky on this patrol..

Hello submariners...

Occasional game modder and reskinner, 3d CGI enthusiast, and general military simmer, here. Played SH-3 for a fair number of years on and off, finally reinstalled on my current PC, and googled for mods...

Ended up here.

Ding ding, ding ding. Gato, arriving.

Hello, everyone. Returning to SH4 (my favorite sub sim) after a hiatus of 2 years. It's still just as much fun as I remembered.

I don't remember, specifically, how I found SubSim.com but it was via a Goggle search, no doubt.

It's good to be back aboard and now it's haze gray and underway!

I was reminded how much I like to watch ships sink my the capsized cruise ship off italy. Probably politically incorect but hey It looks cool... blowing up ships. See it all started with silent hunter 3. I lost that disk years ago so I bought silent hunter 5 on steam after trying to find the latest version. I'm waiting on it to download and downloading some mods to fix the known issues. One I'm excited about is the realistic sinking mod. So hopefully I only need to put one hole in every compartment, do time compression and the ship will capsize and go down. Also if only ships took damage from fire. It would be more realistic. i also like the idea of more powerful torpedoes. Because the ships in SH3 took too many hits to bring down. Anyway my name is andrew. I live in BayMinette Alabama. I have an honerable discharge from the navy. I have a 5 month old son named Ethan. And I like sub sims, strategy games, rideing 4 wheelers, and cutting down trees with a shotgun or ak-47. I also like exercise and food. I have a garden in the summer. But mostly right now I want my downloads to finish and then I want to find a carrier and sink it. Maybe a battleship or two. I hate how our government has **** on our bill of rights since 9 11 and I don't fight for them anymore because of it.

Hi all
Have just signed up after reading the posts on these forums for a while now.
I first played a sub sim many years ago with the old GATO for the PC. Currently I am playing Silent Hunter 3 and 4.
I have just started to play with GWX and I must say that I am impressed (and a little overawed) by the amazing efforts of this community.

To all those who have taken the time to create the mods, fixes and other improvements for these games I would like to add my thanks and appreciation for your efforts.

:salute:Good evening gentlemen, Lance Corporal Carrow requests permission to come aboard!

I discovered Subsim in a google search for "silent hunter 5 mods", and ended up discovering an amazing source of more than just mods; there are a great deal of very informative tutorials on how to really do all the complex things that actually had to be done to successfully apply submarine ordinance to a target, and while I don't play at that realism level (I'm not smart enough, I'm just a dumb grunt LOL), I still get almost as much enjoyment out of reading the various tutorials as I do playing the game. And, it's nice to find a place on the internet where people actually seem to know what the hell they're talking about.

As for me, I'm a US Marine infantry Lance Corporal in the inactive reserve, I just got out in July and am now going to college, haven't declared a major yet but I'd like military history if I can find a school that has it. I really only posted because I had to in order to download more than three mods, but don't take that for being anti-social, I'm just outclassed in the knowledge department by most people here, so I refrain from talking about things I know comparatively little about!

(:salute:'s the ensign)

Hello! I've been lurking without registering for quite some time. While I'm not exactly a hardcore subsim player, I've enjoyed both Silent Hunter 3 and 4. I bought the original Silent Hunter when it was released but I never got into it and I thought Aces of the Deep was a much better game.

I just got a new rig and one the first games I wanted to try out was SH5. I've completed the first mission but I soon realized that it needs some mods especially as the interface really doesn't feel as authentic as SH3. I only played the vanilla SH3 and SH4 so hopefully I won't mess up (but then there are plenty of good threads to make sure that I don't).

Greetings all!

Very new to the whole SH series - went with the Mrs to buy a new vacuum and left with a copy of SH5 too! I'm a big fan of realistic WW2 sims, such as IL-2 series, and loving SH5 already. I'm playing mod-free at the moment (and with embarrasingly low realism levels...) to get a feel for it, and found loads of great hints and info here at SUBSIM - so thought I'd join up to say thanks!

Good hunting everyone, and cheers for all the tips in the forums. I'll be needing more when I decide to kick up the realism percentage...

I got SH5 for free with my gaming rag of choice the other day. Immediately went into coop with a mate and started bumbling around. Then I cursed a bit, watched a few videos of some Eastern European bloke doing trigonometry, cursed some more, then read what felt like half of this forum.

Now I'm loading up on mods and planning to come back at the game with a vengeance. :arrgh!:

Wish me luck.

SHIV was disapointing to me.

SHV looks beautiful but does not have the character that SHIII has. If only SHIII would come with the graphics of SHV, or SHV could acquire the exact same SHIII's functionability, I would be happy as a clam!

Any questions, send traffic.

Been playing simulators like Combat flight simulator, Operation Flashpoint 1, Arma, and Orbiter for years.

I saw SHII and III bundled together for $10 one day and after doing a google search I found this site and the highly active modding community.

Running SH3 with GWX, MaGUI F and just can't get away from it (been playing it for about a year, lurker status? :O:), although I'm already looking for SH4 so I can get out in the Pacific.:ahoy:

Hello All, KL Huygens from Southport UK here.

Was a SH3 player for a long time years back, then due to one thing and another (mainly Windows 7 and Starforce related) was cast adrift on a lifeboat that although it was furnished with water and hardtack alas contained no working SH3 GW3 install .

Then along came a wonderful rescue ship, no less than the M.V bittorrent. complete with a fully working "starforce-less" win7 friendly cargo, and here I am, returned to the SH3 fold after nearly 2 years adrift. Looking forward to seeing whats happened in the world of SH3 in my absence.

P.S has SH5 got any better since its release? Or is it just as dreadful as it was? I'm sure the mod community will have done their best to rescue the dire offering before it ran aground on the reef of terminal awfulness.

Best wishes to all.

K.L Huygens

Would this be a copy of SH3 your referring to?
