The surface search radar just got available in my career. I installed it along with my (already fitted) Improved SD radar.
Now it seems the air search radar doesnt work anymore, planes keep popping up on me and i dont know what to do.
Is it a bug? Do i have to turn the SD radar on? Am i doing something wrong? Its my first time installing an SJ radar on my boat.
Please help me, i dont want to spend my days underwater :(

It strange, sometimes it seems to work fine, giving me plenty of air contact reports.
Sometimes i dont get any report until the enemy plane is right next to my boat.
I just finished my patrol and refitted the old SD radar see if that helps any.
I remember reading somewhere that some planes flew under the radar's capabilities, making then undetectable.
Is this simulated in this game?

Why don't you just get one of the mods?

Why don't you just get one of the mods?
Why is it that those of us who don't use all the latest and greatest mods and don't play with difficulty set to totally impossible get this type of response almost every time a question about vanilla SH IV is asked?
I for one have tried the mods. I discovered that the extreme realism takes away the enjoyment of the game. I have enough stress in my regular life that I prefer a less "stressful" escape from real life.
It's a GAME for goodness sake. What is WRONG remember it's a game. Aren't games supposed to be fun? Or is this improper behavior for this forum?

Actually Drum has a point. The vanilla game has some serious problems which can only be fixed with mods. Whether the air search radar is one of them, I don't know. I don't recommend the "latest, greatest" mods, or that everyone play at 100%, which I don't do myself. That said, some mods do help, especially with the parts that are broken.

Jeff, if you like the vanilla game, you might want to try the Game Fixes Only Mod, (GFO). From what I understand, is its the same as vanilla, but addresses many of the issues the stock game still had.
If you find yourself getting bored, or not feeling enough challenge, then maybe go for one of the others. That's what I did. Although the CTDs that plagued it at first were the main reason I opted for one of the supermods.
As Sailor Stave put it, the supermods do fix many of the things that were broken.

The mods ADD realism like TMO no more wimpy escorts you now have to FIGHT and depth charge armed planes and also historical dates for IJN radar. It also adds SUBNETS so you can no longer raid Rabaul and get out easy sneasy you have to avoid subnets you will also encounter enemy subs. TMO also adds to new boat classes the Tench class and Narwhal class. TMO also increases the density of minefield the Vanilla game had like one mine per kilometer while TMO has 15-20 per kilometer. TMO also adds Bungo Pete and then you throw RSRDC in their voila you have historical battles from the the battle of the Eastern Solomons to the sinking of the Yamato.

I had exactly the same trouble a while back when i started. As i recall, i never actually found the cause and had to start a new Career.
Regarding mods, not all of the mods are about Difficulty. GFO is, as the others have said, purely bug fixes.

Go easy Jeff.
This has happened to me too when I used to play the stock version. A quick, easy fix is simply to return to base as if you're ending your patrol. When I did that, my radar suddenly reappeared.
As far as the mega/super mods are concerned, they're not as intimidating as you might think. If you give them a try, I'm sure your stress level will drop even further. Heck, few people have a more stressful job than I do.http://i1045.photobucket.com/albums/b456/archangel501/Smileys/6a2d31af.gif;)

IIRC the SD Radar had bug related problems in the Vanilla SH4.

Just bought the U-boat missions add-on. Hopefully the 1.5 patch will help.

It fixed my air search radar and a few other bugs i noticed.
Also i find the game runs much smoother now.

Well many of us played the Vanilla SH4 1.0 which was a bug ridden pile of crap, which maybe explains the reactions you mentioned, since then it had Patches incl. 1.5 which is included in U-Boot Missions. I would dare to say that even the Version 1.5 without any mods is a major improvement against the 1.0 Original.
The Mods like RFB, TMO, FOTRS changed many of the bugs and put great immersion into the game.
I play SH 3 and SH4 with difficulty settings 100% but nobody is forced to do so, so if you want to play a modded SH4 with difficulty set at 74% or lower, well why not and ist not very "stressfull".
