Konashenkov said the fire had started on the wooden scaffolding and then engulfed the submarine's outer hull. Most modern submarines' outer hulls are covered with rubber to make them less noisy and more difficult for an enemy to detect.
These guys need to take some safety training.
Maybe Russia doesn't have an OSHA... :DL

Next time, they should use TWICE the duct tape.
Maybe Russia doesn't have an OSHA... :DL
Not any more. They were sent to the Gulag for citing Putin for not wearing hunter orange...

Whats cheaper buy another submarine or start up and struggle to support another large government bureaucratic nightmare.
I'd go with build another submarine.

The Russian navy has a nasty history with fire.

Good thing she was unarmed and the fire never spread to the interior.

The damage from the fire could be so massive that the submarine would need to be scrapped, the Interfax news agency reported Friday. But Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who is in charge of the nation's military industries, said after the meeting that the submarine will rejoin the navy after repairs
An unspecified number of crew remained inside the submarine during the fire, Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Igor Konashenkov said in a statement
Konashenkov's statement left it unclear whether the crew were trapped there or ordered to stay inside.

Is the death count still zero with about 10 people injured?
Glad they were able to get it under control.
Delta IV. That brings back memories.

Wow.. the latest pictures tell the story.
The front Subsim page has the artcicle. Here is the link: http://www.barentsobserver.com/submarines-torpedo-compartment-was-on-fire.5003663-58932.html
The blogger who posted the pictures said it was in the torpedo room. I have to disagree with him. It looks like there was a large hole cut in the forward outer hull into the wet space were the sonar arrray is housed.
Now the news statement about needed a new hydrophone array makes sense.
It also makes sense that they could partially submerge the hull. If the forward compartment was open and they flooded it, that boat would be razar blade fodder now. Talk about flooding...
Wouldn't a fire of this nature, inside the hull make it neccessary to scrap it? I mean because of the hull alloy being compromised?

Depends on if the pressure hull its self was damaged. Russian boats are double hulled so if the pressure hull is ok perhaps the hydrodynamic hull could be replaced.

Depending on the heat of the fire, I would be worried about the heat effects on the pressure hull. Heat treatment is HUGE determination in the ductility of a metal. You heat it up and then rapidly quench it (like submerging it in water) the steel will become more harder & brittle.
Brittleness is a BAD thing to have in a pressure hull.

Russian boats tend to be far more compartmentalized than US boats, so it makes we wonder if they could replaced part of the pressure hull on a Delta. :hmmm:

I believe their hulls are titanium. I work with Ti every day at temps over 1000f, and it's amazingly resilient. Stainless steel falls apart within months in this environment, while Ti still looks new. I would doubt this lower heat would have much affect on it. That said, it is a high performance pressure hull.
But think of the crew stuck inside. Wonder how quickly the "Hot in here?" joke got old.

Not all hulls are titanium. It's really expensive to manufacture and use. IIRC only the Alfa was an all-titanium hull (mostly because they thought it'd help with MAD), and I think Typhoons use it as well (mostly because they thought it'd stand up to the ice) though it's used in varying degrees in other subs.

Btw could somebody explain why in case of Projekt 705 class usually term 'Alfa class' is used in? I see that NATO phonetic alphabets include both 'Alpha' and 'Alfa' for letter 'A'. Is there some specific reason for use of 'Alfa' instead of 'Alpha' in case (like other sub having 'Alpha')?

According to this listing only 'Alfa' is correct.

I consider myself nowhere near an expert on Russian subs but my understanding was that it was the Alpha only :hmmm:

The Papa also had a Titanium hull as did the project 865 Piranha boats. The Project 1910 Uniform class might have it as well. :03:
Edit: Project 865 not 855. Typo on my part.

Look at this photo taken before the fire ... : http://www.barentsobserver.com/submarines-torpedo-compartment-was-on-fire.5003663-58932.html

Doesn't that look like a crude cut in the hull on the bottom left of the port bow?
Perhaps an explosion earlier somewhere else was being reparied ...
Why such a huge cut on a very important area such as a torpedo room?
Are the russians into module replacements?
I don't think so :-?
i think this looks more like the bow sonar array. The torpedotubes are located above this section. The crude cut is interesting, as is the 'damage' to the sound insulation panels. Maybe they were installing new insulation and as they had to replace the lighthull anyway, they were not really careful when cutting it open.
Just my thoughts...

Those are sound isolation panels. They blank out own ships noise from interfering with the passive array.
I think you can see the backside of the array in the left side of that hole in the hull.
Interesting photo.. one with a LOT of intelligence in it if you know what you are looking at.
