Was there ever a means to slooowly and smoothly scan with periscope or binoculars?

Viewing the horizon, or attempting to be selective in ones choice of targets is nigh impossible without such a capability.

Grinding DOSBox to a crawl doesn't provide a solution. Was there ever a key combination that allowed this?

Sincerely,
Reverie

Yes it's always been annoying. There are two scan speeds, depending on wether the white arrow you see is long or short -which in turn depends IIRC from how far from the centre you put the cursor- but even the slow one is quite fast. Modern computers with huge processing power don't help much, either.

Hence, you agree that for setting sights on that 21,000 ton troop carrier in a crowd, the likelihood of tagging it resides with a cork in a quagmire; that our elite u-boote training amounts to no more than a torpedo in the toilet bowl.

I concur.

Do Modders undertake challenges such as this, or is 8-bit beyond consideration? The fascination seems to fawn the visual, yet so much logic and practical entertainment remains with the earlier, simpler, and cogent software.

Aces of the Deep needs a MOD! :D

Anyone care to provide the means of incremental scanning of Targets in a crowd? The winner receives....Hitman, any suggestions? Advice for returning to Kiel? Hints on running AOD via DOSBox fullscreen, yet retaining the resolution of a Vindow? A tuna sandwich?

Earnestly,
Reverie :)

Now that I have been rethinking about it, I happen to remember that there was a key combo to move the scope slower and another to move it faster. I don't have my AOD manuals at hand, but you can probably find them online, or at least the card with the keymap :hmmm:

EDIT: Look here: http://www.subsim.com/subsim_files/patches2005.html#aces_wav

Alas, no joy.

Though I am wondering why this reference sheet is vacationing away from my MS-DOS CD packaging of the program...:-?. Hope I haven't tossed it out without thinking.

Thank you, Hitman, for your efforts.

Sincerely,
Reverie

Have you tried ALT+arrows, CTRL+arrows, and SHIFT+arrows? I haven't AOTD installed now, but I think it was something like that what made the optics move slower. :hmmm:

This prompted me to open up my copy, and I can't get any keys to work at all. The only way I can move the scope is to use the mouse cursor. Clicking while near the edge makes it move faster. Clicking while near the centerline makes it move slower. That's all I've ever been able to do with it.

Hitman, having tried many initiatives as a response to your technically irradiant assault on this quandary....

...oh, shut up, Reverie...

yes, i have tried F I C T I Peck, and about ninety monkies on those keyboards....only to discover that this is a suprisingly entertaining piece of software.

Sailor Steve?

"Oh, YEAH?" :woot:

"I can't get any keys to work at all...I can move the scope...use the mouse...move faster...move slower. That's all I've ever been able to do with it."

600 miles from the nearest ocean, and over 36,222 posts, one would think this Sailor could sail anything!!! :DL

Rock 'n' Roll Grandpa, is there a future for Aces of the Deep?

Sincerely,
Reverie :sunny:

Way back when SH3 was under development there was a thread about what we'd like to see in the new subsim. Someone replied that he'd be happy with AOD with SH2's graphics. I stole that quote and used it many times.

These days I've grown fond of the mods from SH3, the crew from SH4 and the graphics of SH5, but yes, I still play Aces Of The Deep from time to time. There's something about being able to avoid sonar by sitting on the bottom (and getting stuck in the mud) that tickles me.

AOD FOREVER!

Comma and full stop work for me on my keyboard.. (, and .)

Dabbing the key nudges the scope along.

Thats nothing compared to trying to re-centre the gyros on the TDC.

any cheats for that?
