...well. I'll refrain from snarky commentary, but there's really not much to say here.
However let's hope this isn't going to be a problem for the already-strained situation in Korea.
I will, however, miss one of my favourite blogs now...

Let's reflect on the amazing achievements of Kim Jong Il
* Even before his birth, the future leader of North Korea was triggering miracles. Official biographers say his birth in a cabin on the slopes of Baekdu Mountain in February 1942 was foretold by a swallow and heralded by a double rainbow. When he was born, a new star appeared in the night sky.
* The first time he picked up a golf club, in 1994, Kim reportedly shot a 38-under par round on North Korea's only golf course, including 11 holes-in-one. He then decided to retire from the sport for ever.
* Kim has the ability to alter the weather simply through the power of thought.
* The fledgling leader was a genius as an infant, with official North Korean biographies stating that he had learned to walk at just 3 weeks and was talking at 8 weeks.
* As a junior high school pupil in Pyongyang, he corrected and chastised his teachers for their incorrect interpretations of history.
* Kim wrote six full operas in two years, "all of which are better than any in the history of music," according to his official biography.
* He designed the Tower of the Juche Idea, a 170-metre tower in the east bank of the River Taedong in central Pyongyang that is topped by a glowing red flame.
* Kim's official biography also claims that he wrote 1,500 books during his time at Kim Sung Il University, from where he graduated in 1964.
* According to the Korea Central News Agency, Kim is an expert on all aspects of the film industry and "improved the scripts and guided the production" of the movie "Diary of a Girl Student." His favourite movies are reportedly "Friday the 13th," "Rambo" and anything starring Elizabeth Taylor.
* Kim reportedly employs a servant to inspect every grain of rice that is served to him. Any with the most minor of flaws is discarded.

I won't speak spitefully of a human dead and gone.
May his soul find its just reward in the hands of the Creator.
Its important to remember that whether any of us approve of his actions - Jesus loved him. I have no doubt that Jesus didn't approve of him any more than we do/did - but his soul will stand before the Lord and answer for the actions of his life - just as we all will.
For us humans, that may not seem like enough - but if its enough for my God, then its enough for me - however the Lord sees fit to judge.

well, at least one tyrant less in the world.
It's said that his son, Kim Jong Un will be his successor, glad that we have to memorize only one new syllable - the rest of the name stays the same...
While his son might be a little more educated, I doubt we'll see any big reforms. It's not only one person but a whole family clan which holds the power in NK and they have no reason to give up their privileges.
The only hope for a change would be an uprising of the people which would only be successfull if they had parts of the army on their side, so I don't put my hopes up too high.

The only thing saving them from a pasting all these years was those 2 protecting it.
You think he will play nice, maintain the status quo, as its overlords in Asia want. Or escalate the situation in an attempt to "show" how strong he is?

The Korean Penninsula is about to become VERY interesting. The only thing i'm not sure about is "how soon" and "how long".
The thing is, one of three things is going to happen (at least in my opinion):
a.) Political instrife and the regieme falls apart and the DPRK government crumbles. (I think this is the least likely scenario)
b.) On of Jong-Il's boys takes charge, and will be compelled to establish his authority. This means, more brinksmanship, more sabre rattleing, and a time period of, "OMG we might resume the war!one1111" (most likely scenario as this happened when Jong-Il took charge).
c.) One of Jong-Il's boys takes charge, and surprises the hell out of everyone by not engaging in the usual brinksmanship. (It could happen I suppose)
So, if my understanding is correct, ill guess we'll see which of the three happens.

I'm thinking he'll do as China tells him and not escalate anything into a crisis.
I'm in agreement, Jong-un is said to be weaker and easier to manipulate than his father (who in turn was weaker than his father) so it's likely he'll toe the line of the PRC for the moment...unless one of his elite generals gets to him first...but to be honest, it is in the DPRK elites best interests to maintain the status quo and a war with the ROK will destroy that status quo completely and utterly.
I wouldn't put it pass them to do some aggressive things like shoot at the Christmas trees or shoot some fishing vessels...but war...very unlikely.

They are all crying because they know the son will be worse. Official wailing is a cultural thing and doesn't reflect emotions for wailers always.
Actually I'm not sure about that. If you look at the people in that video, they're relatively well dressed and outside what by North Korean standards is good residential area. Something tells me they're no 'average Koreans' and are probably pretty close to the top of the North Korean society. In that case, they may well be genuinely upset to see their benefactor go.

So, if my understanding is correct, ill guess we'll see which of the three happens.
A: Not likely, the fear of the people and size of the military makes this unlikely.
B: Yes, we will endear ourselves to China, by poking at America, then shutting up and letting China and Russia bail us out in the UN, just like before, but agression will be stepped up as an example.
c: The peaceful sort would be rebuked in private by China and turned promptly into your scenario "b" or be overthrown by China itself.
my logic tells me it will be choice B. He will try to show his power by ticking off most the UN nations besides its lapdog protectors Russia and China. Something also twinges in my senses that those nations tire of this charade.
Great synopsis.:salute:
Lets hope Kim Jong Un is not the nut job that his father was but like they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
That happens alot here in America....we have nut jobs and they have little nut jobs that grow up to be big nut jobs.
Hopefully this son is his own man and has some sort of intelligence to move his nation into the 21st century and try to get along with everyone.

Good riddance but...
My son lives in the RoK with his Korean wife so I am watching this very closely and am more than a bit concerned.
That said, one of the good things about seeing Qadaffi impaled by his own people is the message that it sends to the totalitarian leaders of the world. You can bet that the PRC will pull every stop to keep the DPRK status quo but should the Tubby Leader (who followed the Dear Leader who followed the Great Leader) try and move south to consolidate his regime, they might be a bit less inclined to offer a blank cheque than in the past. This might lead to Kim Jong Un concentrate on keeping his boots stamping on the faces (in Orwell's famous phrase) of his own people rather than trying some grand act of unification.
War is bad for business and right now, for the PRC, business is reasonably good but there is some sand in their economic machine waiting to cause damage. Internationalizing the DPRK's internal power struggles would only serve to hit China's bubbling economy where it would hurt most.
I imagine that Tubby Leader might try some brinkmanship with the RoK but anecdotally from my young-fellow anyway, the South Korean press and people are mighty sick of the North's aggression in spite of the DPRK nukes and the sinking of the corvette Cheonan served as something of a tipping point. Expect the RoK to respond with firepower at the next North Korean outrage.
Then, things get interesting.

My best wishes to your son. Alot of American boys out there in range of artillery. None of them (or us at home) need it 60 years after the war....
I believe this boils down to China. They are the the puppetmaster. Without them, and to a lesser extent Russia, Both countries seem to love Iran and North Korea, funny, huh?

They near the border?
I don't think anything will come of this, like you say, war is bad for business and bad for the elite.
If there's another massive harvest failure which begins to affect even the elite...then there might be a problem...but so long as they can keep the military fed and the elite family fed then there'll be no war with the ROK.

Now my worry is, if none of those things happen, and the doo-doo hits the fan. Things escalate..
America will jump in. And IMHO it would be a righteous defense as S. Korea will ask us for help.
China will hop in as well, just like in the 50s. Russia will at the minimum supply arms, and at the max jump in too.
Worst case scenario, but very plausable.
It only took the assassination of a minor leader to spark WW1...This would be our third try at world wars, except we all got nukes.
Honestly, I think you're overestimating how much Russia and China care. In my estimation, China cares a little bit, in part because they've always been concerned about Korean migration, in part because of the ideological parallels. Russia just knows that North Korea doesn't have many other partners and are happy to do business with them for lack of other choice. However given how tiny that business is, they honestly would jump ship instantly at any sign of trouble, and in fact more probably be positioned against North Korea in case of war.
Bottom line is, the neighbours don't really care. In fact this has been observed consistently in their relationship over the last few years, especially with China. The North Korean leadership has really fallen out of grace with them and is increasingly becoming an embarassing drag.

Mr. CCIP. Not so much as over stating, but a paranoia based on events.
Both seem to invite a showdown, and proxy wars are suitable.
Except only Koreans and Americans will die in this, and the main instigators will strut about like peacocks.
Pardon my distrust for 2 nations who have broken the idea of a unified effort the UN was supposed to represent.
You know, preventing tyranny, Yet we ignore China nasty, vile treatments of dissenters. Go to China and google or baidu Tiennamen square, see what you get...Then google the same in another country.
At least here in America, the least any OWS protester got was some pepper spray, and a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge. I wonder what you get over there in those two meadows of heaven for large scale protests?

That bastard makes headlines on page one the second day now, even when already being dead. Why are the media giving him this monumental platform as if he meant anything to mankind? And when the funeral is, bet they again will reserve page 1's newsstory for that oh so important stuff.

@Soopaman2 and Oberon, thanks for your interest. He teaches at a small university in Iksan, near the west coast and about half-way down from the DMZ.
While I do not think that anything will happen either, the potential is certainly there and the PRC is probably more inclined to maintain the status quo than some give credit for. Besides Kim Jong Un has too many things that still need looking at...
The DPRK acts as a buffer state so a united and democratic RoK extending to the Yalu River points to industrial and resource rich Manchuria like a shotgun barrel. Particularly since one could anticipate a sizable US military presence to remain even in the event of even a peaceful reunification with the RoK. China is unlikely to forget that Korea provided the springboard for the Japanese invasions of 1904 and 1931.

Kim Jong-un promises a new clear future for North Korea.
Oops, spelt nuclear wrong.

The media are reporting Kim Jong Il died of fatigue. You'd be tired too if you'd written 'Hamlet', cured polio, and won the Tour De France 19 times.

RIP Kim Jong Il. No doubt one of the most legendary Asians of a generation, seconded only by the small handful who have conquered Takeshi's Castle.

Experts are predicting a global shortage of puppies this Christmas after the North Korean government confirmed the catering requirements for Kim Jong Il's funeral.

Gaddafi, Bin Laden and Kim Jong Il have all died this year.

Seriously doubt it. Gorbachev actually worked to get where he was. He served in lots of posts and improved the living conditions of those he was in charge of.
All Kim Jong Un seems to have accomplished is being made a General by Daddy.
In the end I think KJU will just be a figurehead for some other leader, perhaps some of their top military commanders.

I give it a week before the little guy starts up.
Pardon my disgust.
I had almost, a sliver, tiny, miniscule amount of respect for Jong Il. Regardless of his methods, he had a certain charisma that made his people love him. People get the government they deserve.
Will sonny be able to endear the people to him without revolt?
Maybe America and N Korea can finally sign the peace treaty for the Korean war, is my ultimate hope.
It could even lead to a peaceful unification of Korea. Who could stand on their own in the world, and not need the US or China to sow its fates.
I'll go back to hugging trees, and smelling flowers now.:O:

Yep, the Viking known as Leiv Erikson and his crew stayed in Newfoundland and some parts of Canada and US for a few months. There are rumors of them going as far as the Hudson river. Leiv was the first man from Europe to reach North America. Columbus did`t really reach North America, he ended up in Cuba, witch is considdered as a part of South America. This was in late 1400`s. Leiv and his expedition was in late 900`s. I am one of the unlucky ones. I have no Viking ancestors. My ancestors were Krauts if you`re American, or Fritz if you`re British.
They say that this tower, located in Newport Rhode Island, may have been built by, if not Vikings, then some other group of pre-Columbus European visitors.

"They" also claim Viking remains in the midwest. There is much debate, but the best sources I've seen indicate the likelihood is that Ericsson never got south of Newfoundland.
From the article you linked:
In 1992, radiocarbon dating tests of the tower's mortar were undertaken by a team of researchers from Denmark and Finland. The results suggest a probable date of construction between 1635 and 1698.

Well pre-columbian visits to north America don't have to have been made by Leif Ericsson but I agree with you that the Newport tower was likely made sometime in the 1600's.

Give it a rest with your hopes for a better NKorea or Gorbachev (who was a very smart politician). This is a puppet and to self assure everyone he's not, he'll do stupid things like sink another warship etc. He's like Medvedev in Russia but worse. A puppet who'll do stupid things to self assert himself. Medvedev had Georgia war and now tries to talk tough to nATO (thanksfully they ignore it). Watch this guy. Only hope China tells him not to do too stupid things but China never has Wests interest in mind so all in all, a sh.tty thing the old guy died (who was like the biggest America fan inside).
