I cannot seem to load SH3 onto my new computer which has windows 7 as OS. Searched the forum but cannot seem to find anything related or anything in the downloads to correct the problem. Can anyone help please ? It worked great with windows XP. Thanks

Having posted the thread I now have found 17 pages related to this problem so am ploughing thru them. But if anyone has a quick fix I would be obliged. Being 66, I wonder if i could ask the answer to be in plain language - modern technology confuses me a bit :D

...ok here goes.

right click your SH3 icon on your desk top. open compatability tab. go to 'run this programme in...' and choose Windows xp (service pack 3) click 'apply' close tab and give it a go. you may also have to run the game in 'Administrator' mode which i dont know how to do. have a look at these threads i had on the very subject not so long ago.

If you would explain to us how your previous attempts failed then we might have some insight into what is causing your problem. Now all we are left with is guessing or come up with general suggestions.

What is the version on your DVD? Did you need to patch it up to 1.4b on your XP system? Does the DVD have the Starforce copy-protection on it? This is quite a gamebreaker in Win7.

One advise I usually give is to change the default install location. SH3, but alot of other games and applications too, want to put themselves in c:\Program Files\. Vista and Win7 protect that folder against possible abuse by virusses and other nast things. (well, try to anyway) It either denies file changes, or it allows them to be temporary only. But that also means it frowns upon legitimatly modding game files or even making screendumps. If you install it somewhere else, like c:\games\SilentHunter3, then Windows 7 won't care what you do to these files. It is perhaps not the cause of your current problems, but certainly something usefull to know for planning ahead.

1. Uninstall SH3 if installed already
2. Run SFRemove
3. Reboot
4. Begin installation of SH3 as normal
***change setup.exe properties to Run as Administrator and change for all users. Afer that, Click Troubleshoot Compatibility and click Run with Recommended Settings (WinXP SP2). Now run setup.
***I also changed the installation directory to C:\games\ubisoft\silent hunter III\

5. When you get to Game Shadow cancel install
6. When you get to finish screen DO NOT press Finish. This IS crucial!
7. Install the 1.4 EU DVD patch with Run As Admin
****The EU Patch would not recognize my version, so I used the U.S. Patch. Again, I set it to run as administrator for all users and ran it under recommended compatibility mode.

8. ONLY after Patch has completed hit finish and the launcher screen runs to check system spec and reboot message appears. DO NOT reboot.
***No reboot message showed up for me.
9. Exit spec check. DO NOT choose Launch.
10. Overwrite the files with the NO DVD rld-sh14.rar
11. Run the game. Should now work.

i had the same problems until i came across this one
so i copy and paste it here i did not come up with this solution myself but this one did it for me happy hunting and a great new year to all :arrgh!:

Thanks guys. Quite a lot there to try so will spend some time on it later.
The version is v1.0 and yes I did need v1.4 to download for XP. The initial problem is the protection. It just asks me to reboot to continue for the protection system to start, but when rebooted shows the same screen, so i guess that is the problem. All the files seem to load ok, it is just getting over the protection page. I did try compatibility mode for windows XP service pack 2 but got the same result.
However You have given me some good things to try so will persevere.
Thanks for all your help.

2. Run SFRemove
WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:

Where does on obtain this program? I've helped people run a search to get rid of Starforce remnants, but this sounds easier.

Is it not in Neals official How to play Silent Hunter III without the DVD in the DVD Drive (Starforce free) thread - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=160118

Starforce have an official removal tool which download here. (http://www.star-force.com/support/drivers/):D
