Hi everyone. I was just wondering if there are any mods out there that add ai subs that will actually dive and fire torpedoes? I am pretty sure I have seen mods for them in SH4 and SH5.

This is already a forgotten hope for SH3. It can't be modded, not without SDK imo. Iirc there was attempt to force torpedo boats to fire torpedo, but torpedo traveling speed was enormously fast.

Thank you for the reply. So there is no way to make it work? I always thought if something was possible in SH4 then it should be in SH3 since they are more or less the same engine aren't they?

SH5 has the basic code built in to allow subs to dive and fire torps through scripting.
SH3 does not and I don't recall anything like that for SH4 but I may have missed something in the SH4 area.
There was only one AI Diving Sub for SH3 that I know of.
There were problems in the development of it that were never followed through on due to time constrants.
And the only video of it is gone.

Thanks for the quick reply! That's really unfortunate... I guess i will have to purchase SH5 one of these days. Also, I thought I saw something in the Wolves of the Kaiser mod thread for SH4 that they had managed something.

Yes it did.
It travelled surfaced and only dove when an enemy ship was near.

If it had no weapons to attack with? It would avoid contact.
If discovered? It tried to evade the Hunters.

Wow! That sounds really neat! Would it be possible to somehow transfer this AI to the various AI subs in GWX? Or do they do this already?

It was an actual project for GWX at one point.
Due to some problems it was shelved as it could not meet time lines.
Any big project has a time line for release. If a test project can not be completed in those time lines?
It gets dropped.
We made the choice to drop that project.
I feel to this day it was the correct choice.

I also feel maybe it's now time to revive the Monster?

Maybe... It would be one step closer to everyone's dreams of having fully functioning AI submarines, and of course, if you can find time to work on it! :haha:

While not havoing played with h.sie's latest project, I believe there was improved wolfpacks in it? Being able to combine the two may give SH33 another brath of life and renewed interest in it, as that was always near the top of most players wish lists....
Being the only shark in a REALLY huge ocean does get boring.

Someone was able to get destroyers (and aircraft, I think) to fire torpedos, but they seem to be very erratic in their aiming and performance. I don't think this was solved or put into any release. AFAIK, there are no diving or torpedo firing AI subs in SH 4.

I think convoys in GWX sometimes spawn with damaged ships but that's as close as it gets to simulating co-op wolfpack tactics other than radio reports.

There are surface only uboats that can attack convoys. I think h.sies mod incorporates them a lot

If memory serves, .................. I think SH4 suffers from the same issue asSH3 with i sub firing torpedoes. They are in game, and will dive if they spot you, but I don't think they take aggressive action.
I know someone was trying to get torpedo planes to attack and they would drop the fish, but I think they ran into trouble with torpedo speed, and direction keeping problems problems, and then issues with moving targets too or something to that effect.
I'll see if I can find the thread, which will explain it out in detail.

As I recall AOD had wolfpacks ... and just last night when trying to close in on a convoy I was ID and 3 warships came after me. I did escape after eating 6 bannnas and chili peppers ...
My point is even if there were other UBoot AI that could not fire they could distract the warship escorts for me to get inside ... maybe with one ham sandwich!!

Fortunately, I've figured out the compression of texcoords for SWTOR 3D meshes and handed the information to another Guy to finish the Noesis plug-in.
:D
So I may just get started on another test Unit soonish.
I also had an idea for fireing real torps from it.
They would be limited in many ways by the Game engine but could cause enuff confussion to make things a little more interesting.

As a side note, if I can get it all to work in SH3?
It will work in SH4 also.

That would be a major input to have a few or even one other U-Boat spawn to pull the escorts away! A diversion would be great.
As I recall, it was enjoyable to see convoy ships exploding in AOD when on scene with my boat ... havoc!

Wow! If you could get it figured out, that would be a boon for both SH3 and SH4!
Especially if you could crack the nut of the airdropped torpedoes.
