So I looked at my frequent flier points, and I realized I qualify for a free plane ticket (on Southwest) Need some ideas where I could use it?:hmmm:

See the U-505? I haven't been there since '96.

Chesapeake Bay has a rich maritime history.

Mariner's Museum in Newport News, VA http://www.marinersmuseum.org/

USPS Yorktown Battlefield http://www.nps.gov/yonb/index.htm Been there numerous times though it's better to visit when it's warmer (spring or fall especially fall)

War of 1812 bicentenial up in Baltimore, sometime in June I think.

OH! Carl's Custard & Ice Cream in Fredericksburg, VA. can't miss that if you're in the area. While you gorge yourself on custard there's the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvannia Battlefields http://www.nps.gov/frsp/index.htm

Whatever you do, don't come to Salt Lake. Not that I wouldn't mind seeing you again, but what a waste of a good plane ticket! :O:

Why not come to the North East and rent a car for a week or something. We got Museum ships at Boston, New London, NYC, Buffalo and Chicago. Those cities are basically one big line.

I just cashed in my points, so I has a free plane ticket.

Thinking about:

Providence, RI = Battleship Cove, lobstah dinner:hmmm:, See more Colonial/ Rev War stuff this time.
Chicago= U505, drive to WI and see uss Cobia
Baltimore= Gettysburg, Civil War stuff.
Norfolk= BB Cheezhead, more Civil War/ Rev War (Yorktown) maybe Civil Wargasim:DL
D-Day re-enactment in OH:hmmm: http://www.ddayohio.us/about-us.htm ; USS Cod
Houston= subsim clubhouse, put Romney signs on Mookie's lawn:hmmm::D
Anybody wanna hook up?

Must be where Southwest airlines flies.

Timeline: Mid-May or Mid June.:hmmm:

BTW, SW airlines flies to Des Moines:hmmm: (secret coded message)

Yeah, you could go to Adventureland...

From your list, I'd pick Norfolk. There is just so much to do in the tidewater area. Small aviation museum, obvious naval stuff, history from Jamestown to modern day. Head north a bit to Colonial Williamsburg and DC. You could easily spend two weeks running everyday and not see half of it. Who knows what may have been added in the last 20 years since I was there?

If Va Beach is your thing, hit the north end around 86th St. Downtown (44th) St. is too touristy. If the Jewish Mother is still there, stop in for a sandwich.

Woohoo! Altoona here we come!:har:

About the only thing to see in Des Moines is actually over in Omaha (the Strategic Air Command Museum) and up in Chicago (U-505 and other stuff).

EDIT: Oh, there is also that porn shop out in the middle of nowhere just off I-80 between here and Newton. :rotfl2:

Providence, RI = Battleship Cove, lobstah dinner:hmmm:, See more Colonial/ Rev War stuff this time. Providence is an awesome city. When I lived in CT I used to date a girl from over there and we used to hang out in Providence all the time. If you go, don't miss the Newport Mansions....freakin' amazing and opulent. Have a Del's frozen lemonade. Get an Awful Awful from Newport Creamery. Sip some espresso at Cafe Dolce Vita in the Italian neighborhood on Federal Hill.

Chicago= U505, drive to WI and see uss Cobia

We went to Chicago last year. Had a great time. The museums are first rate, and just walking down the Magnificent Mile is awesome. Do the architecture boat tour...super cool old buildings. And make sure you get a dog at Portillos and have a pie at Lou Malnattis.

Houston= subsim clubhouse, put Romney signs on Mookie's lawn:hmmm::D Is it bad that I can't picture Romney and not see him as the Jason Sudeikis SNL version anymore?

I have a very flexable holiday schedule.:hmmm:

Maybe a mini subsim meet in Chicago?
Lets say, for fun, we did this. How much time would you need to prep for it (take time off, etc)? I'm aiming for mid-May or Mid June.:hmmm:

Too short of notice?

My work partner is going on sabbatical during that time for around a month, so I want to go before he leaves.

Jason as you know you are always welcome at Che' August. I may be gone the latter half of May as I am planning to do some work up at the cabin but except for that time frame I should be around.

I had to check the map and you are close! So, here's a crazy idea. See U-505, drive up to Milwaukee, catch the ferry to Muskegon to see the USS Silversides.:hmmm: How much is the ferry from Milwaukee to Muskegon?

The Cobia is pretty cool, but it is farther north.

Pricey. But Not too bad for a one-time thing. The 150 minute trip is half the time it takes to drive around. It is comfy though. :yeah:

Well if that includes Texas you could always visit the Cavalla...I hear they are looking for someone to clean out the inside of the torpedo tubes.

Might be a bit of a tight squeeze but I reckon you'd manage :DL

Theoretical plan:

Fly into Providence:

1 day at Fall River
Take the back way into Lexington-Concord= See Lexington Green
Take train into Boston, See Constitution again, Bunker Hill museum.
See Groton again?
Take ferry to Nantucket?:hmmm: Spend day there.
Any other cool Rev war-colonial stuff in general area?

Well the Freedom Trail goes right past the Bunker Hill Monument as well as several other Revolution points of interest.

Then there is Plymouth Plantation
http://www.plimoth.org/

and

Old Sturbridge Village

I forgot about the Freedom Train.

Plymouth and the freedom trail sound pretty cool.:hmmm:

Is the Plymouth area rural or urban now?

nikimcbee
04-19-12, 01:51 AM
Do you think a guy could see Lexington Green and do the Freedom trail in one day?

I'm thinking about flying in on a wed (the 9th) and leaving on Mon (14). That would give me four days of fun. So here's a projected schedule
1 day Fall River
1 day Lexington-Boston
1 Day Nantucket?:hmmm:
1 day Plymouth (or stuff in that area?)
= four days

What days would you want to hang out?

That should be possible. Not much to see at Lexington or Concord other than on Patriots day.

Sounds like a plan:salute:. Minor change, I was at our pt-boat board meeting and I told our curator I was thinking about going to Fall River, so he wanted to know if he could tag along. I said the rules were this:
No whining, no saying "I'm bored", gotta like ships and museums. That's not a problem. So he's tagging along:haha:. Actually, he wanted to meet the pt-boat curator at Fall River. Hope that's not a problem.

FYI Niki,

I just realized that Sunday the 13th of May is Mothers day. My wife informs me that my posterior is lawn trimmings if i am not standing tall at my mothers door around noontime.
