View Full Version : Blagojevich gets 14 years in prison.
“It reminds voters of the maxim, the American people usually get precisely the government that they deserve,” Zagel said.

Now if only we can give the rest of the crook politicians we have equal justice.
I guess Blaggy never worked for Goldman Sachs, then he would have gotten a bonus, and a job in the cabinet.

Yeah, there's no way that he's going to serve all 14 of those years. He absolutely should, but it's not going to happen.

And it won't be the same kind of prison "Tyrone the gang shooting, drive by killer" is in.
He will be in the pansy ward with Bernard Madoff, and all the other rich criminals.
I say put him in General Population. Then real justice can be served by the inmates.

I still remember the halcyon early days of his oh so public disgrace, when Wonkette regularly referred to him as "Rod (the Fifth Beatle) Blagojevich."
Good times, good times. :O:

I admit to not understanding the US judicial system but why doesn't he have to go to prison until February 16th next year?

Because he is wealthy.
Tyrone from the hood, and Dave (Dave is a Chav over there) from the trailer park usually have zero money for a lawyer, and get an overwhelmed public defender, who value quickness, over researching a sound defense.
Blaggy is rich, and can hire a big boy.
You think Oj or Casey Anthony would have gotten off with public defenders?
Just another rich/poor discrepancy.
See my post above about the club med he will serve the time in.

So basically a law for the rich and another law for the poor :hmmm:

Soop is a bit delusional but a bit right, just in the wrong direction. Blaggo is out on bond, if there was no bond, ala Tony Rezcko, the reporting to the prison is immediate.
One who has posted a bond and is not considered a flight risk will get an opportunity to get their affairs in order. That is up to the judge.
For all of you that say he will not do the full 14 years, you are correct but not for the reason you think. Federal time is 85%. That's with good behavior. Not because of who someone is, or their clout.
mookie there may be a silver lining after all, Judge Zagel may have screwed up by stating for the record that since Blaggo was contrite and remorseful, he knocked off two points from the sentence. Why is that important, the AUSA can appeal it on grounds that the federal sentencing
guidelines were not followed or that the judge showed preferential treatment to the defendant.

How did they get 18 separate charges out of trying to sell just one seat?
Because he was convicted of more than that. The press keeps focusing only on that one charge but he was charged and convicted of
11 counts related to the senate seat and 6 counts related to fundraising extortion of a hospital executive. He was also convicted back in Aug 10 of one count of lying to federal agents.
If you want to read the actual indictment you can find it here. But beware, his indictment is 75 pages long!
http://news.lp.findlaw.com/hdocs/docs/blago/usblagojevich409ind.html
Here is a list of the charges, but he was not convicted of all of them
Racketeering Count 1
Racketeering Conspiracy Count 2
Wire Fraud counts 3-13
Attempted Extortion Count 14
Attempted Extortion Count 15
Bribery Count 16
Extortion conspiracy Count 17
Bribery Conspiracy Count 18
Attempted Extortion count 19
Bribery Count 20
Extortion conspiracy Count 21
Attempted conspiracy Count 22
Bribery Conspiracy Count 23
False Statements Count 24
Not that I have any sympathy for the guy but it sure does look like the government is piling the charges.
I mean racketeering and racketeering conspiracy? 6 counts for one extortion? I'm sure there are all kinds of legal smegal explainations for the way they did it but they're basically dividing one crime into as many separate parts as possible. I call that piling on.

Every time he got on the phone to try to better himself was an additional count. When the Gee wants you, they get you.

As Platapus said, he was charged with a number of seperate crimes. It was only because the feds were already investigating him that we even found out about the senate seat deal. People and businesses were forced to give cash in order to do business with the state. It is called 'pay to play' here. The interesting thing here is that Blago's own advisers tried to caution him that some of these things were of dubious legality, and he found out he was being investigated, but he went right on, full speed ahead. The senate seat sale was just the last straw. The feds decided it to be in the interests of justice to arrest him before he could complete the crime.
I think the sentence was fair. IMO, anything less than 10 years would have been a slap on the wrist. The worst part of this, is that there are so many crooks in this state, it will probably take a generation to turn things around.
