I'm quite new to submarines in general and would really love to know more, in as much detail as possible. The submarines of world war one and two particularly are interesting to me, so are there any history books out there that go into real detail of their history, war performances, conditions aboard? As nitty gritty as possible! Cheers!

Do you want light reading or in-depth (no pun intended)?

Did you bother to look at any of the titles in Nikimcbee's library?
United States Submarine Operations
War Under the Pacific
Torpedo Junction
John P. Holland 1841-1914 (not WW2 but a handy reference for an understanding of the USN submarine arm)
Clear the Bridge!
Take Her Deep
Silent Victory
Wahoo
An Oral History of US Navy Submarines, and
USS Pampanito: Killer Angel

lool, I like the part when he writes: "Part of McBee submarine library".
Taste the words "submarine library" for a moment:
Are we talking about a hole library with solely submarine-books, where he shows us just a tiny little part of this library?
Or is a tiny little part of his big submarine c o l l e c t i o n, we are talking about ??
As many of the titles are very old.........what will the rest of the collection consist of ?? :rotfl2:
Thanks for sharing the books, McBee, but it seems that these titles are mainly the submarine books you have, or ?? :D
Not to sound rude, but your collection appeared really huuuuge in the first place, but hey, maybe I'm very wrong..... :salute:
As I said, thanks for sharing !!

Of course no U-Boat library is complete without Michael Hadley's Count Not the Dead: The Popular Image of the German Submarine.
Peter Padfield's War Beneath the Sea is an adequate single-volume general history of the submarine in WW2 as well.

"Count Not the Dead: The Popular Image of the German Submarine", I do not have.
Thanks for the tips, Randomizer !!

A personal favorite of mine is

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=5373491705&searchurl=an%3DErminio%2BBagnasco
It's a compendium of every submarine type built by every nation during the war. A lot more detail than I'd expect from such an overview. No accounts of actions or planning, just the details of the subs themselves.

The Submarine Alliance in the "Anatomy of the Ship" series is the most detailed study of a single submarine I've ever seen. The drawings are incredibly intricate and detailed, and there's several hundred of them too.
Check out this diagram of one of the boat's air compressors:

And here's one of one of the electric motors:

The book is out-of-print and a little expensive now, but worth the price in my opinion.
