Hello everyone,
I am a big fan of silent hunter series, i have played it since silent hunter 2. And in some cases i find it to be better than the rest of silent hunter games.
in SH2 I remember, that once i was hit pretty bad by a depth charge, but i didn't sink... instead my entire boat rolled about 30 degrees to the left. once i have surfaced i remember my bridge was nearly touching the water.... nothing like this that i have ever seen in SH3. what a shame...
but the main question is about the SH5, i think that the vanilla version of that game was terrible. and i have deleted 1 hour after installing.
Now, many, many months after it came out i can see that there are quite a few modds that enhance the realism of that sim.
Basically, There are 2 things that I have hated the most in the vanilla version. and can you please tell me if they have been changed or rectified by now.
1. I found the aiming controls to be so much easier than SH3. is there a mod that makes aiming and firing much harder? As far as i can remeber most of the job was done by the computer...
2. the crew is the second thing that i have hated. they have absolutely NO emotions what so ever! In SH3 you could see the worried faces of you crew when you are being pinged by a warship. let alone the frustration when the depth charge was closing!
In SH5 I have seen my crew conveniantly laying on the bunkbeds, minding their own business when we are being striken by depth charges! The officers in on the bridge are most disinterested about what is going on outside!
in other words I have completely hated the atmosphere inside the boat, it was so fake and relaxed. noone is holding on to the railing when explosions come your way! They did this in SH3!
Please guys, tell me if any of this has been made better...
thanks for your time!!!

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
I've only recently purchased SH5 myself, so I can't really offer very good answers to your questions, but...
1. You could use full manual targetting, doing all the calculations yourself. I'm no good at that, but you might find it just the challenge you need.
2. A lot of people have discussed the crew animations, and there are already mods that add extra crew. I don't think there is anything that corrects that yet, but I'll bet someone is working on it.

Hi dr and welcome to the forum :salute:
Making targeting harder;
1. In the Main Menu go to "Options"
2. Then choose the tab "Settings"
3. There you can choose "Manual Targeting"

I find that the new crew management is a step down from SH4 - SH3 was quite good and SH4 crew management tons better - I liked the fact that you could control your whole crew, promoting and giving medals, etc. SH5, whilst is a new idea (basically its like an FPS/RPG in a boat minus guns) really I think has lost the atmosphere as in SH3 & 4, although its not that bad, but I miss a fair few aspects of SH4 that are not in SH5.
There is something missing that is not in 3 or 4 - for sure, but the interface mod really makes the game tons better and there is a new campaign mod that I have not used yet, will complete the main stock game one before I look into that.
Differences, yes, but the reviews that I read when it was first released really put me off even looking at it, leave alone buying it. It doesn't appear to be *as* bad as I thought it was, although compared to SH4 there is something lacking. A step back maybe.

I think you should have a look at the mods around here and I'd be surprised if you don't find SH5 being a step forward after trying them out.
Yes, the SH5 was a beta (I'd say) but the modders around here are wizards taking SH5 to new unbelievable levels continuously. They deserve all respect.
As for the interface - to get back to that familiar UI I'd suggest you try this mod; http://www.mediafire.com/?jfbtzaq8csztscb
The campaign 'Open Horizons II' is a must that you can't leave out.
If you'd like to enhance immersion you could add to the list the 'Stormy`s DBSM collection SH5' thus getting German speech. Download here; http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=164552

Give it some time. I don't think you'll be disappointed, the game engine is a huge step forward.
Need advice on what mods to go for?
Your questions are welcome. Anytime.
