If that’s a concern for anyone, though, it is more likely Romney than his Democratic opponents, whose view of Gingrich was summed up Monday by Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank in a press conference announcing his retirement.
The veteran congressman gave voice to what most members of his party are saying in private, and some are gleefully admitting in public: that they believe Gingrich would be a general election opponent beyond the Democrats’ wildest dreams.
“He would be the best thing that happened to the Democratic Party since Barry Goldwater,” Frank said.
