From trial and error I have concluded the advanced search doesn't allow phrases or wildcards, but is case insensitive. Am I correct?

SHIV example:

From lurking and reading I once saw a discussion of silent running, and turning down the engine RPM below some value. I wanted to use the search facility to find that post. So I used advanced search for ... silent running. The effect seemed to be that I searched for just the word running. Then I tried searching for "silent running", trying to make it a phrase, and again it was like I searched for running.

Searching for the word silent seemed like a bad idea in the silent hunter forum. So I searched for rpm, and got no hits. I found that hard to believe. By wandering around I found that the word RPMs is in some posts. I searched for that and found posts, this is good. Then I tried RPM*, hoping that a wildcard would work. It didn't.

TBH I've often been frustrated by the search facility but readily admit the more specific you are the better your chances of a positive result.

Sometimes, for really specific or weird searches, doing a google search using the "site: subsim.com" tag at the end works better. I forget the exact syntax but thats close. That will force google to only search in subsim, which sometimes wields better results. quite often, as regular google search does the same as subsim is usually the only place tto find those answers anyways.

Related to the above post, this one is a few years old:

'RPM' got no hits because the search program doesn't recognize words with only three letters. Take RDP's advice and use Google. They updated their page some time ago, and it now has a box at the bottom labelled "Site/Domain". Much better results that way.

Thanx to all who pointed me to using google's advanced search to look through the subsim site.

While cruising around subsim I see a dizzying amount of things of interest, but too many to remember them all, or even where I found them. The community is quite impressive.

The google search gives me a chance of finding them again. However, so far, while looking for things I have read I just keep stumbling into new stuff of interest. Too much stuff, not enough time.

Don't be afraid to just ask. Someone almost always knows where one thing or another is hidden, and all will be glad to help. :sunny:
