First round of Egyptian elections has the fundamentalist Muslim Brothers in clear lead in at least 6 of the 9 voting districts being polled this time (there will 18 more districts being polled on two separate dates, plus separate polls for Shura chambers). On second place is still not the alliance of relatively liberal and democratic parties - but the even more radical Salafi party.

:yeah: Let'S rock the Maghreb!

Was there ever any doubt that one faction of the biggest bodies would come out top?

So if the brotherhood are the fundamentalists then what are the salfi?
I suppose they would be the fundamentalist fundamentalists.
But which of the salafis parties is it?
Is it the fundamentalist fundamentalists or one of the even more radical fundementalists fundamentalist fundemental salfi parties?

But hey look at it this way all muslims are fundamentalist and there is only one interpretation so no matter which parties had stood or what for it would still the wahhibis Sky likes that win as they are the real ones:yeah:

I foresee big trouble after the elections are over because the army has no intention of handing over the power :hmmm:

Alot is at stake here. Without the Egyptian army in power I doubt anyone in the U.S. would approve giving 2 billion a year in foreign aid to someone like the Muslim Brotherhood to maintain peace in the region. Especially since the MB have made very clear as to thier intentions towards Israel.

I for one hope the army can maintain control.

Here's a 2009 U.S. embassy cable recently released by WikiLeaks that makes essentially the same point: President Mubarak and military leaders view our military assistance program as the cornerstone of our mil-mil relationship and consider the USD 1.3 billion in annual FMF as "untouchable compensation" for making and maintaining peace with Israel. The tangible benefits to our mil-mil relationship are clear: Egypt remains at peace with Israel, and the U.S. military enjoys priority access to the Suez Canal and Egyptian airspace.

Yes, but say about the Greeks what you want - so far they just lob hate-filled Nazi-defamations at us, no IEDs.

But we are battle-hardened in that regard - British yellow press does that all the time! :D Thanks for the training, Tommy.

The very same policy has been biting you in the arse again and again for the past 60 years.
Paying dictatorships to keep down the nuts just ends up giving the nuts more support, or in some cases the dictatorships take the money and then support the very nuts you are trying to keep down.

quite the conundrum. an area of the world that no one wants, but we all need.
