EU bans claim that water can prevent dehydration. Brussels bureaucrats were ridiculed yesterday after banning drink manufacturers from claiming that water can prevent dehydration.

So apparently water isn't really wet after all?

This will no doubt have major ramifications with regard to the Pope's presumed religious affiliations, not to mention the defecatory habits of bears.

Oh dear, the bottled water merchants got their advert knocked back:yeah:
Such a pity eh, poor little buggers should be specific if they want to make a claim
So if I drink a gallon of water every 4th tuesday I will not get dehydration...after all that is what they wanted to say on the bottles and if it says it then it must be true.:rotfl2:

Still it must be a slow day for news for the telegrapth to cycle out a 9month old story, its funny that the story mentions the british governments advice on water consumption as a benchmark for the benefits yet also links to a telegraph article rubbishing that very same british governments benchmark:yeah:Even better, that story then links to another earlier story about the significant dangers to health from regular consumption of significant amounts of water as well as debunking another of the water industries previous advertising claims.

Ukip MEP Paul Nuttall said the ruling made the “bendy banana law” look “positively sane”.
The water ruling and the banana ruing are both perfectly sane...UKIP on the other hand are as nutty as a sack of almonds.

Prof Brian Ratcliffe, spokesman for the Nutrition Society, said dehydration was usually caused by a clinical condition and that one could remain adequately hydrated without drinking water.

OK, guys, take away his water and see how long he lasts!

It is in times like these that I`m so glad Norway never joined the EU. Isn`t water the most healthy drink you can drink? It`s not like it`s dangerouse to drink lots of water. I once drank 6-7 liters in one morning.

@ Joea: The earliest reference I can remember was from a Peanuts comic strip in the 1950s or '60s. Lucy called it "Instant Water" and had the same description: Just add water and stir." :sunny:

Well technically such thing as "water poisoning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication)" does exist.

Uhhh....Hmmmm. Herp derp?

Who bribed who?

Someone with alot of money and influence felt threatened by water. Kinda like coca cola and knocking down a ban in the grand canyon.

I will drink some San Pellegrino and smile knowing the EU is as far down the rathole as America is.

What a lovely mixture of excrement, hogwash, sensationalism, half truths and bollocks that article was. Perfect to start the day with.

Edit: I also like the fact that seemingly most people who commented on this piece did not read past the headline.

excessive water consumption IS dangerous (fatal even) and 6-7 liters in one morning sounds like a potentially dangerous amount of water. Don't repeat that.

True, Norway is not a EU member but Norway has joined the European Free Trade Association, the Internal market of the EU and because of that currently pays 340 million Euros per annum to the EU budget. ***8220;Roughly 110 million euro are contributions related to the participation in various EU programmes, whereas close to 230 million euro are made available to development projects for reducing social and economic disparities in the EU, primarily in EU 10.***8221;
http://www.eu-norway.org/ARKIV/newsarchives/EEA_agreement_facts/

That is in fact more than many EU member states contribute to the budget while Norway is having no say in EU laws and regulations.

It was summer. And we were out on a field trip. It actually felt that I needed all that water, since not much of it came out the traditional way.

but seriusly, Joegrundman is right. A human is not a camel, you don't store large amounts of water for later.

It IS possible to drink too much water, and it can even be fatal as you can see. Of course for most people in normal situation, their body does a decent job of telling when to stop.

Platapus

A meeting of 21 scientists in Parma, Italy, concluded that reduced water content in the body was a symptom of dehydration and not something that drinking water could subsequently control.

Reduced water is a symptom of dehydration??

And the worst part is that while in jail you will only get bread as water is evidently not necessary to prevent dehydration.

I was waiting for this one. It's late and I have a splitting headache, so I can't go into the details but here's the short version. Two German scientists decided to show the EFSA (European Food Security Authority, not the EU, but an independent expert body) rules on food labelling are too strict. What happened is that the EFSA decided that putting a label on water bottles that merely drinking water prevents dehydration doesn't comply with Article 14 of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006. This, as you will all agree is true, as there are idiots who will drink half a litre, then collapse in the scorching heat and after they wake up sue the company that sold bottled water. Here's the article if you're still confused:

In order to ensure that the claims made are truthful, it is necessary that the substance that is the subject of then claim is present in the final product in quantities that are sufficient, or that the substance is absent or present in suitably reduced quantities, to produce the nutritional or physiological effect claimed. The substance should also be available to be used by the body. In addition, and where appropriate, a significant amount of the substance producing the claimed nutritional or physiological effect should be provided by a quantity of the food that can reasonably be expected to be consumed.

So with all due respect, MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP YOUR CLAIMS! I'm getting sick and tired of constantly having to point out that while the EU does do stupid things at times, what the UK media writes down is the equivalent of a retarded individual discussing quantum physics. /apologies to all who were offered by this screaming rant/

You mean people are expected to read, next you will expect people to think too.:salute:
But come on, the OP manages to "read" fictional lines in legislation, you don't expect him reading an article to make any difference to his view on it do you? though I am surprised the telegraph article didn't magicly translate into "muslim eu multiculchi dictatorship invents new secret halal water that everyone must be forced to drink to make them dehydrated"
But hey it was good enough that he posted an article that links on to two of its own articles which contradict its own arguements used in this article.

Thamk you Respenus. Behind every stupid law there is usually a reason.. How good it is might differ, but things are usually more complicated than first assumed.

It is like people ridiculing the cucumber law(specifying the dimensions of cucumbers to be sold in EU). It sounds strange but the reason is quite logical (still wrong, but logical). Someone discovered that cucumbers made inside the EU had less variation than those produced outside, and since trade embargoes are restricted through the WTO someone found a smart way for protectionism.. Logical reasons for illogical laws

Are you ready to start complaining at how CMBI grades its fruit in Israel?
Exactly the same process as the EU grading of bananas isn't it but you are simply going by a nonsense story about it to form your view on it and are complaining about something you are clueless about:yep:

I wonder why no one is complaining about the other label attempt that was also turned down for the same reasons as the water one, namely being that the claim being made wasn't accurate "enriched fruit drinks are good for your teeth":yep:

Well any idiot who actually paid attention in biology has an inkling that sugar + acid = enamel degradation. Add to it the preservatives....and you get my point. Had they phrased the ad as "drinking water helps prevent the onset of dehydration" is a lot more on the ball.

Well any idiot who actually paid attention in biology has an inkling that sugar + acid = enamel degradation.
But it is advertising, it is meant to sway idiots who don't pay attention
That particular rejection on the label was over false claims about fruit drinks with added calcium acting as a miracle barrier for your enamel.

Had they phrased the ad as "drinking water helps prevent the onset of dehydration" is a lot more on the ball.
With the water it was all in the wording, the two other labels they applied for on bottled water got approved as the wording was accurate.
