View Full Version : SH5 compared to SH4 / SH3
Now that DRM is just (bad) history, I am planning to get SH5; but before doing so, I just wanted to ask what are the key benefits vs a modded SH4/ SH3
I understand graphics are superb and also that there is a lot more emphasis on crew management, both are welcome, but minor improvements in my opinion.
My questions:
is the AI better?
convoys zig-zag?
are there wolfpacks? or at least some interaction with friendly forces?
anything else improved?
is there any mod that can compare with the "immersion" you can get with SH4-Op. Monsun or SH3=GWX?
thanks

Tell ya what. Ask yourself this:
Do you really like Das Boot...... A lot?
If so, get Sh5. It's all about Das Boot. If you want the "Das boot feel", SH5 is your game. First person immersion without any equal.
If however, you expect more simulation, better mechanics of the simulation itself, if you expect more details in how things work, Sh5 is virtually unchanged from SH3 or SH4. In terms of the simulation, its nearly identical and has a couple more bugs then the previous titles.

"Couple more bugs" may be the understatement of the year.

Not really Duc... especially when you're telling the truth. ;) And I've never known you to not tell the truth.

Yes they are.

There is not more emphasis on crew management. there is no crew management. There is no crew. There are key officers and men you can talk to directly, but they always have exactly the same names. In SH3 there were a handful of crew names. SH3 Commander turned that into 1.7 billion possible names. In SH5 there is no crew roster at all, and no names except for those specific few.
Just sayin'.
[edit] And I just realized I could and should have said more. I cut my teeth on Silent Service, Aces Of The Deep and Silent Hunter 1, none of which had any crew either. I'm a little spoiled by SH3 Commander, but if not having those names doesn't bother you then SH5 has nothing wrong with it in that department. I was only responding to the claim that it had better management.
On the other hand I'm currently in the middle of my first real patrol, no mods at all because I want to experiment slowly and don't care about the career. I want to say that if you're not into Real Navigation, SH5 has the best waypoint system of all of them. It's not really much different in function, but you don't have to go to the drop-down menu as in SH3 or find the right screen as with SH4. You just click on the sub icon and move the cursor. If you want to extend it you just click on the last waypoint and you're good to go. In this case they finally got it right.
thanks, I will definitively get it when I have some time; in Amazon it is at $8.99! so really not a big deal if it is inferior to SH IV
I could have bought it years ago, but I will never accept DRM
