Hi guys, I've got the tingling in my bones and the taste of salt water in my mouth again, that only means one thing, I feel it's time to head back to sea, with the throbbing of diesel engines under my feet.

Now because it's been a few yrs since I last ventured into the world of sub warfare. I was wondering what things have improved in the SH5 world.

The reason I stopped sailing in the first place, was although I loved the graphics and the 3d sub environment sh5 provided me, I struggled with the keys and interface, missing my tried and tested SH3 UI and Key mapping. I also found that the simulated world and campaign while pretty just felt like it was missing something.

Now this is not a rant about SH5 or even trying to do a SH3 vs SH5 thread.

But I was wondering, if it is now possible, to have the best of both worlds. E.G. The Graphics and 3D virtual sub of SH5, but with the realistic feeling of GWX, and keys and UI of SH3. Also is there anything like SH commander out for SH5 yet.

Now looking at this Im guessing some of you wil ask why don't I just install sh3 and GWX. Trust me I've tried, sadly as I'm running 3 monitors in eyefinity at 5670 x 1080, SH3 just will not play even in 1920 x1080, and disconnecting eyefinity justo run one sim, isn't really an option as its a bugger to get working again.

SH5 will run on my machine, ok not in eyefinity but in 1920 x 1080, I just turn off the other two monitors. Hence why, I was trying to get the best of both using SH5 as a base.

I hope you can understand what I'm trying to do. Please understand I don't want this thread to become another sh5 vs sh3 match. I feel both have their own strengths and weaknesses and both have given me pleasure in previous yrs.

I'm just trying to get the best possible sub sim experience available.

Well worded post, and fair questions. To answer: no, it's not possible yet. SH5 has not achieved the GWX level of quality. Recent developments by subsim modders is making the GR2 format used by SH5 available for mod use in a way it hasn't since release, so there is still hope.

In the meantime, SH5 has become a different beast. TDWs New UIs with TDC mod can replicate your SH3 keyboard layout exactly as you remember it, and OHII improves the campaign. There are tons of mods, from equipment upgrades, environment mods and even 'wet' sub hulls.

It requires a bit of mod-soup, but it can be made into a decent game. The GWX-era of SH5 is a few years away at best, but it will happen. But while you wait, sample what's being done and see the amazing progress the modders have made. Check out the mods forum, post your list in the thread when you need help, and experiment with what works for you. For now SH5 is very playable with mods, and that's good enough!:yeah:

WELCOME ABOARD (or back, as the case may be)! :sunny:

As Orpheus said, TheDarkWraith has made a UI mod that lets you have pretty much any interface you want. The funny thing is that it can't replicate the Simfeeling Six-Dials mod, which was my favorite in SH3, but I'm actually getting used to the SH5 interface and rather enjoy it.

There is no analogue for Commander, and the lack of any crewmembers at all except for the main stations is something I feel to be a step backwards, though that won't stop me from playing it, or at least fooling around with it. As for Commander's ability to name the ships, it is my current understanding that SH5 does give names to ships, and with that in mind I'm preparing to redo my Ship Names mod for SH5. We'll see how it goes.

Nothing wrong with that, but it's not for me. I'll keep playing SH3 until I can do a realistic campaign in a Type II and a Type IX. But then I also still ocassionally play Aces Of The Deep, and it's seventeen years old.

Looks like you've just "Out done yourself", it doesn't always pay to be the 1st to get the latest, fastest, biggest set up, as your computer will then be "so far up it's self", that it turns it's processor up at what it thinks are "inferior" games.

I am a great fan of GWX on SH3, but have (as in got the game) bypassed SH4 & gone to SH5, I'm having loads of problems playing this blasted game, no thanks to a totally useless manual, that says it includes a list of keypresses, but doesn't, has a totally different interface with no explanations as to how or what each icon or button does, but I am damn bloody minded & this game is not going to beat me.

If all else fails, I will re-install SH3 + GWX, just to have something to play, while I kick the crap out of SH5 & get it to make sense.

:arrgh!: with a barrel of ale .
