Hello all :)
My name is Nicole, long long time lurker, finally trying to make the plunge into this forum.
I usually hate forums with a passion, but from my long time lurking days I know this forum can be very nice to hang out on and it's always nice to meet people with similar interests as myself.
And the question I get asked alot by friends or when I tell people what my hobbies are in which I reply with "submarines, anything navy or WWII" they look at me like.. wait..but..you're a girl right? don't you like shopping?
Well sure I do :P
But I grew up with ships and talk about the navy and such.
My family is kind of a navy fairing family you could say, I was raised on ships, so it kinda stuck I guess.
That's my backstory anway, I wanted to tell a little bit about myself since I see alot of "hi im new" and that's the end of it posts.
Not that there's anything wrong with that ofcourse, just saying :P
I am 23 years old, played SH III until SHIV came out, which was a while ago, been playing it on and off since then, I also have SH V, which I hate with a passion, mostly because of the many many changes to the SHIV format which I am so familiar with and feels just right to me.
I don't know anything else to say really, Looking forward to making some friends here ofcourse if you have any questions, just let me know.
I'll be happy to answer them :)
Nicole..

Welcome to Subsim Nicole! :salute: Glad to have you aboard!
Hello Nicole, welcome to Subsim, we're all friends here, hope you stick around. I love SHIII, I have IV and V, I don't play V, too many problems, however the modders have done wonders, you might want to give it another go!:yep:

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
Since you've been lurking you probably know that you're not alone in the female member department. As for SH5, there are mods which recreate the SH3 and SH4 interfaces, and the SH5 would is actually looking very bright.
Also, don't forget to PM Neal Stevens or email him at subsim@subsim.com. Female members get custom avatars for free, whereas we lesser mortals have to pay for them (donate, actually, but it all feels the same).

Wow, I thought it might be a girl-thing, but no - I've just checked, it seems every new person introducing themselves has the same people welcoming and another 40-odd just looking! :o

Aye....one of the best lessons I taught my son and daughter years back....
"Now watch Dad kids"....signed in as afemale then all the unwarranted crap would be posted.
"Now that kids is why you don't use chat forums or believe what people claim themselves to be"
They are 18 and 22 years of age now and still remind me of that early internet lesson from time to time :sunny:

Why would 40-odd people come and view this thread, and only a handful actually say something?
Part of it is the natural tendency to look at every thread, but only reply to ones in which the viewer feels he can actually contribute something. I rarely greet people on this particular forum because 95% of the people who introduce themselves here do so because Neal requested it, and they never post again. I responded this time only to tell Nicole about the avatars available.
Also a lot of the people who look at any given thread are lurkers who haven't even joined Subsim themselves.
So now you know the horrible truth about me. :O:

Well I do believe that for sure, that's the main reason for me joining to be honest.
Joining a forum with people that just irritate me or get on my nerves, or me getting on their nerves, is just pointless in my eyes.
And I know that not everyone is going to get along, but this community is in my eyes one of the more mature (if not the most)
Maybe that's due to the fact that it's a community centered around simulations, which attracts (generally) a more patient , mature fan base.
I have friends who play games like modern warfare and when I see them post or something on a forum, it's 90% bashing, name calling and making fun of each other.
Everyone has been really friendly over here, so far :haha:
Don't know why I'm telling you all this, people always say I talk too much

I think you're spot on. The only thing I would add is that because of the type of simulations there seems to be a brotherhood (or in your case sisterhood :03:) of the sea at play.
Most of the folks here have a deep abiding passion for these games which helps explain why they stick with them year after year. This being the case, we are generally grateful to interact with others who share and exhibit the same passion.
SH3 is a prime example. While many now regard it as an 'old' title, the community here continues to thrive as many of us have embraced it as a 'timeless classic.' It makes us somewhat unique from most other gamers, (some might say quirky :D), but if so, it's a good quirk to have so I'm okay with it. :O:

Absolutely. Newer isn't always better, although I've got some Modern Warfare friends as well who would beg to differ. Still, I think you're right that it comes down to personal enjoyment. If it works for us it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. It's all about having fun and following your passion. :sunny:

Seeing as how your new I'll tell you a short story some know but not all that many actually.
Go back 4 or 5 years during the early development work of The Grey Wolves (the one before the GWX versions) and I used to host the server for a voice comms programme called TeamSpeak.
The Grey Wolves Team (and a few invited others....such as Neal the SubSim forum owner, Hunter ICX and a dozen or so others on occasion) would meet regularly to discuss development work and swap files etc.
There grew a healthy cadre of flyers led by Hunter ICX in the main who played IL1946 on another section of the TS server.
Dowly was in both camps, both modding and flying but refused to use a microphone, in fact I believe there are only about three living souls who have heard his voice (in my case three words in total LOL).
This would often cause angst amongst us because we insisted to everyone who came on to TS it was called TeamSpeak for a reason....voice comms, so whilst we would be communicating amongst ourselves via microphone Dowly would be typing like mad in the text box trying to keep up with the conversation and often we would pretend to ignore what he was typing.
Ever seen someone trying to voice extreme frustration textually....tis a right scream LOL.
Some people were refused admission until they got a mic but Dowly was the exception.
One of the many nights the frustration turned to angst I lost my cool for a minute and instead of calling him a Finnish expletive beginning with the letter 'f' I was conscious of the fact there was one female and one young person on the server so I referred to him in a loud barking voice as a Finnish Ferret and the name has stuck since then.
Dowly was a talented modder and valued member of The Grey Wolves and someone I consider a friend...just don't tell him that :03:

Hi Niccolo, nice to have you here. I am always glad to meet some people with a good sense of humour here...
@ Steve, it's not my mother tongue, but shouldn't it be:
"Not to worry. Frau K has only been here FOR* two years and she's long since become part of the furniture." ? :D
*Or is it British English only?
You're probably right. I conducted a fairly intensive online search, and though "been here two years" is considered acceptable, "been here for two years" is considered more formal and more proper, so I probably should have used that form. Unfortunately all my books on writing are in my storage, so I can't look in them.
On the other hand language changes daily. On of the things that makes me angry is the use of "impact" as a verb: "How will this impact the the community" when affect is the proper term. That said, the use of "impact" as a verb is so common these days that dictionaries now include it in that context.
So maybe American English has changed enough that it's acceptable not to use "for" in that context, or maybe I'm just wrong again. :sunny:

Steve, thank you so much for clarifying the grammar. But I was just kidding - like the Frau K. was -. I thought that the picture of that nice young Nicole was too much - and you simply were - speechless - for a moment. :D
Like me. :D
So please never mind! :D

Well, he's back and missed out this thread so far, but then there's been no sign of OP recently either - who scared her off? :hmmm:
I deny any involvement.
Especially the ferret mating ritual I may or may have not performed behind her window. (http://theuglydance.com/?v=xbvduqtbqzf)
