Welcome to the forums!

You can take screenshot by pressing ctrl+f11 :)

Also you may want to remove the hud while taking screenies and it's done with numpad del.

Welcome aboard. Showers not required and if you have a few diesel stains on your shirt, it adds to your credibility.

Welcome aboard!

If you enjoy the U-boat side of things I urge you to take a look at Silent Hunter 5 now as well. DRM has been relaxed and with the mods you can download from here is a wonderfully enjoyable and playable U-boat sim now.

Thank you all for your warm welcomes. I am heding out on Patrol 4 I will post a pic. Also how do promotions affect crew, I just recived like 14 promotions on my last patrol. But also some new crew mmbers showed up on the left side. Is it better to swap a crewmen for a new guy or build up your crew toghether?? Also for targeting, I seem to be wasting alot of torpedos. and alot of my sinks I have been in less that 600m and broadside to a ship. how can i lead the bow and have the ship walk into it from further out. I take a lot of damage. I think i have had only 1 sub surface sink all have been on surface. and i have not even seen a warship yet. I sunk a Cruiser in a harbor that is my only warshipp all have been merchants.

For targeting this thread is essential (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=652326&postcount=67). Get this method down and you'll be sinking ships like the best of them. Also since you'll have everything setup perfectly you'll be able to attack from range, then sneak away without them ever knowing where you were.

If you are managing to get in that position prior to firing, you are not playing as bad as you think!

I would say that 600 meters is to close, but with correct distance and speed data, you can get very good results firing from 1500, 2000 metres, if you manage to get broadside to a ship and fire when the target is still some 500 metres away from reaching an interception point between yours and the target's course. Geting yourself into that position is 75% of the art.

Firing from odd angles or odd positions can mean two things: a) you could have gotten yourself into a better position, and didnt (so, shame on you). b) the opportunity to fire just presented itself, its a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and you will not be able to pursue and find a better firing position in the near future.

Situation "b", in 95% of times, will regard a fast-moving taskforce. They are not your preferable target anyway. :O:

Hey all I have a targeting ? now, I have been watching the tutorials on how to shoot manually but. I cannot get the shadow of the ship thing to work, I can spin the dial and it only goes alittle but if i pull the mouse down the screen the shadow of the ship that you are supossed to touch the top of the mast with move to the spot but as soon as i let go it issapears and I cant hit anything. any help on how to fix?? oh yeah It is in the training mission in sub school with a porpiose class. thanks.

When you pull the mirror ship down to the mast you than left click the mouse and that will mark the position of the mirror ship and input the range into the TDC input dial, next you click the little red triangle button to send range/bearing to TDC.

That is my issue when I spin the dial say from rt to left. The mirror only moves a touch down. But if I move the mouse down the screen the ship will come down to mast height but as soon as I let go to go push the red button the ship dissapears back up. Im so lost.

In the stock game you can't spin the input dial very far, there are mods that will let you dial in range but you can't do it in stock. The only way to get range is to pull the mirror ship down to the mast and than click the left mouse button with out moving the mouse. When you click the left button the game will input that range into the input dial. You than click the red triangle to send range to TDC. You must of course id the proper ship and send the mast height to the TDC.

That sub school mission is not very good as you are too close to the target, so you may have to run it several times and just get a little data each time and than put them all together for an attack. In reality by the time you're that close you would already have a good firing solution. The target is moving at 9 knots and you're only about 1200 yards away, not much time to get all the readings you need.

As a new guy only 3 uboat misions and 1 US what are the basic mods I need do you think.

I'm a Fleetboat man myself, never played U Boats.

As for mods, my personal option is to play stock for a time till you get a feel for the game. Don't start a career but play a single mission like Hellcat, you start in late 43 I think but you have a Gato and radar and this makes things much easier. Forget those training missions they are worthless.

Don't worry about the mission itself but just go out and find some targets to sink, around the Luzon Strait is good hunting. Once you find a target save the game and replay it to learn what's what. Start with easy settings and work your way up. Leave the dud torpedoes off till you learn, you don't need that aggravation.

The steadimeter is kind of hard to learn but you'll get it soon enough.
One thing that would help is Ship Centered Accuracy Fix mod,SCAF. You use the tops of funnels or decks to get range, much easier. There is a version for stock I believe.

The stock game is quit buggy but good enough to play for a time. Once you have a good handle on the game than mod. TMO is my choice. It makes a hole new game of it but you really need some experience first. Treat stock as training missions and just have some fun while you learn.

As you go along you will have questions and we have answers so ask away. Even simple things, we have all been there and done that.

Good luck and good hunting.

Oh, that reminds me:

I am Kapatinleutnant Bernard von Ufal of U-850 Type IX.
You can type in whatever name you want in that slot, and if you don't Bernard von Unfal will be the name you always get in U-Boat Missions.

Bernard von Unfal (actually the correct spelling is 'Unfall') means Bernard the Accident, and is the devs' take on an old Subsim joke which originated six years ago here:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=84773

Bernard has become the catch-all loser we blame when we screw up in the game, and the devs rolled with that when they created the U-Boat add-on for SH4.

Are you saying that you do not have to play SH5 online anymore?? This was the only reason I never picked up a copy.

The joke is in that very first post by Dowly, "Bernard is dancing on the pole again." It was nothing at the time, but people started using "Bernard" as who we blame when we do something stupid ourselves, and he has been used so much that when the devs made SH4 they made the default name 'Bernard von Unfal'. That's the joke.
