Hi All,
Been my experience that sometimes a corruption occurs in a file that is then carried forward with each reload of the sim.
Although we have resolved this type issue (.ini file) et al. many occassions in a flight sim by simply reloading a new clean file or even deleting the file so the program will create a new one ... get my drift?
Below in another thread, I state that my notepad (UZO or Scope) is blank on 'auto' - a recent corruption (with no new mods added). This is not player error as I have put in many hundreds of hours in this sim.
I think it may have occured when I switched from the manual to auto toggle (maybe).
Is there a file I can access to find the correction? Please see the below thread on "Auto Targeting"
Thanks!

sort of stuff like this:
ManualTargetingSystemRealismPercentage=10
NoMapUpdateRealismPercentage=0
RealisticSensorsRealismPercentage=11
DudTorpedoesRealismPercentage=4
RealisticReloadRealismPercentage=6
NoEventCameraRealismPercentage=3
NoExternalViewRealismPercentage=10
NoStabilizeViewRealismPercentage=5
NoNoiseMeterRealismPercentage=12
NoWeaponOfficerAssistRealismPercentage=6
[MiscSettings]
AlwaysAutotargeting=0,0,0,0,0;for warships, merchants, uboats, air and land targets
or this stuff:
;This file stores static data file settings. Any valid gameplay setting can be
;included. NOTE: Changes in this file get written to the respective game files
;LAST, ie after any other SH3 Commander related changes (except details chosen when

I would presume the corrupted file could be located by a recent date where it was saved by the sim upon closing? It most likely line items 'settings'.

Sorry for the urgency but I was hoping to fix this weekend as I have to go back out to sea in RL.
:salute:
File corruptions often do much more damage than just tweak a value here or there. You probably would have gotten CTDs as the file would be unreadable for the game.
Are you saying that you never used mods in this game installation? Or not since a while? If so, what mods did you install before and then removed. (as they probably weren't correctly removed.)
I really think the simplest way is just to reinstall. Since you apparently are using the stock game. So there's not much time and difficulty involved. Otherwise this file corruption quest might end up in a wild goose chase.

I am not using the stock game, and have had no CTD or other issues EVER. In other sims a file value could not have been recorded properly in a cfg or .ini or other data file that can usually be opened as a text file - one does not always have to 'reinstall'. And yes, all my mods have always worked fine, and yes they have been in the sim for many many months even years of play. Hopefully someone who understands what I am getting at will steer me to the file and line where the target info resides ... per 'samples' I pasted above (which have no relevance to the files I have on the data folder.)
i.e. NoWeaponOfficerAssistRealismPercentage=6 (Change that to 1 Pappy) just an example of what I am saying on how easy there can be a fix...
I do not want to reinstall especially if there is a techie who understands what I am suggesting. If not then to heck with it! I have to head out to the North Sea on a UXO subsea project which I am built for so to speak! Small brain and big muscles ... LOL
I'll check back over the weekend before I catch a red eye ...

Are you using any of the GUI mods like MaGui or OLC? Some of them are designed for manual targeting only, they don't work properly if you are using auto targeting assistance. I have not used them though so I am not sure how they affect the info that appears (or doesn't) on the notepad.

I am not using those mods, nor have I added any mods for 15 months with no issues ever. There must be a data file I can open and look at if someone is aware of the file structure that line items targeting values. I should find the issue there. I am trying to save time not opening all the data files in search of something a techie may be aware of.

I'll check back over the weekend before I catch a red eye ...I'm just saying be practical. You are waiting for someone with modding knowledge to give you the answer. (S)He might not respond in the comming days, and then you are out on the North Sea without SH3. (well, in as far as auto-targeting is required) Use the time you have instead to be certain that you can play. You are assuming the value fix exists, and that the files are corrupted. Actually, where is the proof that a file is corrupted? Other than that you didn't change anything mod wise yourself and something doesn't work anymore as you expect it. But that isn't proof.
Are you sure it is not human error in the targeting process? (I mean, not uncommon after a long no-playing period) Did you lock up the target? Do you have the weapon officer slot filled? If the Nav officer slot isn't filled the helm controls have no effect. So, similar with automatic targeting I think. But I'm not sure, since I always do manual.
I wouldn't be able to tell you where that fix might be at in the files. I just know the quoted RealismPercentages are just the reduction you get from enabling realism 'cheats'. So that won't help I think.

Thanks anyway - but I am willing to wait to see if someone understands the data files and can point me to an alternative fix.
Reloading is easy - just not my cup of tea. I like to get to the root issue which often is easier than one thinks.
In the North Sea, I will not have time to play with a sim LOL as I am running a RL submersible operation surveying WWII UXO for clearance op.
I guess I am used to my flight sim techies who love these kind of challenges - besides it is fun.
As far as human error - lol. Not a chance, been playing for years at high realisim settings .. just a factoid to rule out. Thanks anyway!

Just for Giggles and Tee Hees I thought I would try a instant mission and set the difficulties to EASY just to see what would happen. There I was spotting icebergs and the notepad gave all the info!!!! Range, bearing etc.
Hmmmm. Maybe, just maybe I can try it at my original diffficulty settings and all may just be well. I shall let you know. I am going to dig to see if a 'data file was saved' with that info to compare and contrast. I will seek it out by 'date'.

UPDATE
So my next launch experiment was starting a new career in SH3Commander and at 0 realisim. The notepad worked fine again. So the process of elimination has begun and it feels as good as a corned beef sandwich with dark brown mustard served up by Helga!
I can next ramp up the realisim and see what if anything flumixez or not. Come hither Helga!
:salute:
Darn, maybe those realism percentage do have something to do with it. I gather from your findings that the game considers you capable of manual targeting enough if you have an overall high realism percentage. Wacky game!

After a few permutations one thing I did find out which I should have known ... if you change your realisim setting for one boat and mission it will lock at that setting for all others! So check and recheck per new boat and career. All is well. The career I had an issue with is now A-OK. I recall I wanted one career with manual targeting, one with auto targeting and that was the root issue.

Pleased your sorted but I can't honestly remember encountering the same problem.

Hmmmm. Perhaps we do not have true success then. When I return from a trip I will fool a bit more! Meanwhile she is going into drydock!
