Yesterday the Uplay launcher had an update, which added OFFLINE MODE option in the setting section on the top right corner of the Uplay interface. Now the legal owners of the SH5 can play it without the internet connection needed even in the very beginning of the uplay starts!:salute:Of course you need to disable the savegame sychorization

loading up Uplay now to take a look.

Edit: Yep correct offline is there! I enabled offline then shut Uplay down, reloaded it and it went straight to offline ready to play.

Has someone tried to start the game while offline yet? Like, set it to offline, turn off your PC, unplug your connection, reboot and try to start the game?

Yeah!Though it still goes through the Uplay"Checking For Update" process and you have to wait before it finally confirms that your PC is really disconnect from the internet. At least DRM is gone.I believe there will still be such DRM in UBI's new game but sooner or later that stuff in new games will go the way it is now. What's more, ubi has added OFFLINE MODE in new game's DRM like Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. That's wise indeed.

Yeah, while Online I set the Launcher to Offline mode. Then shut off my PC and disconnected my router. I rebooted, started the launcher, got into game and started a mission and while it took a few seconds extra it worked, which is what matters. :)

Two thoughts:

1.) I'll be damned. Ubisoft finally got a clue, and added an option steam has had from its earliest days.

2.) The DRM is NOT dead. It's still there, it just has an offline mode now. Technically speaking Steam is a DRM as well. Just because a DRM has an offline mode, doesn't mean it no longer exists. I don't even have to install it to know it's a damn good bet that you have to authenticate at least once before it allows offline mode. Like steam, it will probably save your credentials, THEN it will allow offline mode. I'll also bet that if you lose your credentials, (IE saved username and PW) ,you'll have to re-authenticate in order to enable offline mode.

It's quite clear... reduce volume of server maintanance + sell some more products to people disqusted with online DRM

Just hope that it could be new incentive... to moders who previously ignored online DRM product.

lol!

My quote is similar: "Ubi's DRM sucks"

In the last month there were 6 occasions where I could not authenticate because Ubi's server was down, so this makes me happy.....

....however I can't help but think this is the nail in the coffin with respect to any further official support for this title. Not that I held much hope but Ubi could have gained some goodwill but releasing another decent patch.

Ubi continues to treat their customers like thieves (for example recently proclaiming that 90% of people playing their games pirate them) and releasing bug-riddled semi-complete products (Cliffs of Dover). I have no recourse but to vote with my wallet.

Ubi dropped support for this game a long time ago. Two patch's is all your getting, and not the usual four. The DRM, i beleive, is a seperate issue since ubi's DRM effects multiple titles, not just SH5.

Looks like it's a time for little party huh ? :shucks:

Collective protests and product boycott finaly gave results..

When the game just came out, I remember reading some folks twaddled about DRM being a future of "cloud" computing IIRC ? And greatly accepted it as inevitability.. Wonder what can thay say about this event NOW ? :shucks:

The power is in unity, cheers :Kaleun_Cheers:

Collective protests and product boycott finaly gave results..

I think it was more a case of some network guy being asked about the trickle of Uplay traffic for Silent Hunter 5 and responding:

"Silent Hill what? That's not our game is it? What's Silent Hunter? Oh, that boat game? I thought we turned that off months and months ago? No one actually plays that anymore do they? Well, it's Offline Mode now, my bad."

Then again, they did just reinstate some official moderators over on the Ubi forums. So yeah, it's all good.

Penguin
11-04-11, 08:18 AM
Finally! :Kaleun_Applaud:

Now I can buy it.
So does it still need an activation after the first install? Nothing said about that in the Ubi forum.

Interestingly enough they didn't cut the online requirement for Settlers 7, a title published shortly after SH5 - which sold better and is still supported. Guess a DRM removal means that the game is dead to Ubi.

Sailor Steve
11-04-11, 09:57 AM
One of the very first posts said that we do indeed need to activate the game. Since I've registered pretty much everything I've ever bought I can live with that. As long as I don't need permission every time I play it, it's okay.

It sure did take them long enough. The bad news is that this move seems to be more because of the age of the game and less of a corporate recall of the DRM. As far as I am aware, UbiSoft is still standing by it for current and future releases.

Yeeeaaaaah:woot: this is good news.

But can some one explain? is the DRM the same as a search bot looking for updates and such, eg flash player, windows updater, etc etc. Because I have many on these ticking away in the backround trying to update themselves.

kylania
11-06-11, 05:58 AM
Nope. The launcher only updates when you start it. So if you're in offline mode and not connected it'll probably be a little slow while trying to update then failing. You should probably let those flash/java/windows updates actually update too. Just be careful of Java, sometimes it likes to try to install a toolbar or two. :)

Basically you get the game. That installs the launcher. The launcher needs to be online in order to update itself to the latest version. Then you register and login with your account and from Settings you can turn on Force Offline Mode and deactivate Online Saves.

At that point you can now start SH5 without being online.

Steve,

Did you get one of the used ones? I don't know if you will be able to register that since the serial # is already been used. Thats one of the buggers about the game - the DRM killed the "resale" ability of the game. Not sure of course - but that was part of the reason for the DRM anyway.

No. If you look at the Amazon link the price is $5.99. Just below it you'll see "16 new from 3.75". I normally buy the main one, since I'm an Amazon Prime customer and get two-day free shipping. In this case the main listed one doesn't qualify for Amazon Prime, so I went for the cheaper one and paid the shipping. This was November 2, and they told me to expect it between the 9th and the 28th. It came on the 4th. I installed and registered it yesterday with no problems, and started my own thread on my impressions.

As far as I know, yes. They haven't printed any new copies, and the Offline function comes directly from Ubisoft, not from the disc itself. The box on mine says "A permanent internet connection is required to play this game", and the first people to report the Offline function were longtime players, so obviously their copies are originals.

And it works just fine.

By this it means the gaining of Uplay 'points' by completing various game actions, which in turn can be used to unlock extra content, in the same manner as Assassin's Creed and other Uplay-using games. The content in SH5 is very limited, a historical mission or two and a few camo skins, nothing major.

When I activate the forced play off line and disable my internet connection, My load screen goes all the way to the (launch or game) then stops a gives me the message " unable to activate because you are disconnected from internet?" It's definitely true. I've had mine for more than three weeks now, and having some problems with my inferior rig, but it does run on it. Every time I load it up I get a message telling me I'm disconnected and asking me if I would like to reconnect. I ignore it and click the 'Play' button at the bottom of the screen, and I'm on my way.

They could have done this from Day one!:nope:
Yes they should have, but they didn't. They have now, and that's what I was holding out for. :sunny:

Got it this morn. :D

Now, I'll just have to wait for the weekend, to catch & read up on all the cool stuff made for this game!:salute:

PS. to be honest, I didn't think they would drop the DRM for another couple of years!:88)

Thank God they got rid of the silly DRM. Just ordered mine for a ridiculously cheap price off Amazon. :yeah:

I was about to buy it in the shop yesterday, but thought I should check out the other prices.

$3.75 USD through this awesome site?

How can it be that cheap? that's around $8 NZD. It was $50 NZD (around $23 USD) in the shop! :o

I have now also bought the game due to the change. It cost something like £2.50 (delivery was about the same again). It's a shame they didn't want the other £30 odd that I would have spent if it didn't have the always-on DRM.

Such a shame.
They must have missed out on so much money with this crazy DMR, not to mention the bad publicity.
Can only hope they have learnt their lesson.
Glad I can get the game at last, and have saved myself a few £ as well.
If it were not for the DMR I would have paid full price on launch day. Or even pr-ordered.

Correct me if I'm wrong: you still need an internet connection for the initial install?

My buddy is a die hard SH3 skipper but doesn't have internet access. I guess this still isn't going to help him if that's the case.

Yes, you have log on once to register the game.

NiveusLeo
12-18-11, 05:56 PM
Yeah, and really the DRM ONLY hurts the people who legally buy the game. We all know that the pirates are getting around all of this. So in the end it only frustrates the legal players...

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:

Yes, we've been having the DRM discussion for over a year now. Many of us waited until it was gone to buy the game. Yes, you do still have to register - once. After that you never have to talk to them again.

I'm still trying to play off line too! I even re-registered my game with UBI soft, but doesn't help? I think it may have something to do with how U installed the program? ( If you have the CD version or downloaded origanlly from UBIsoft) which is what I did! Also many people may think there off line, but untill you physically disconnect from your broadband or dial-up connection.... Your still "on-line"! ciao :-)

When its offline the game still syncs with the ubisoft game launcher . To say its still online when its not is lame .

I fail to understand it. If I choose offline mode, then block my firewall with no incoming connections, then it launches. Fine. It still says it synching games, but its quicker then that if it is in online mode. That takes a few seconds to synch. If then when I quit the game and restart, the launcher comes up with the logon screen and I cannot click play, it means I have to uncheck offline mode, login, and then check offline mode to play again in the settings. So its a basic con. I have the DVD version, recently purchased from Amazon for £4. Installed with normal settings, patched..etc? Is anyone else having this problem?

Yes. I just tried again, and its first checking for update, then get to the login screen and I click log in but its not doing it. Is just static at the login screen. Then I click settings, uncheck offline mode, click login again and it works. Then, whilst I am at the ubi screen, go back to settings, check offline mode and it launches. I need to be online, regardless of anything I check in the settings. I can play offline, ONLY after I have logged in initially. I cannot play it without an internet connection...I need to login to ubi BEFORE I play.

Well, after a year I tried re-installing my perfectly legit SH5 copy. Didn't get too far - it wouldn't even accept my perfectly legit CD key.
I can't believe I paid money for this crap.
I wish Ubi's managers will rot with brain cancer, die horribly in a car crash or at least be gang raped in the butt. I will never ever buy any product from those mother****ers.

Your opinion is welcome, but you need to read the forum rules regarding swearing, including fake swearing.

Also, your stated wishes for the company's managers is beyond the accepted propriety on these forums.

A example of a good DRM is serious sam 3 with a ruthless invincible mutant scorpion that spawns on the first level. It can't be outrun or outgunned.

I can imagine a destroyer like this in SHV, a lot better than the actual DRM :haha:

Now that DRM is gone, I'm ready to purchase, but got way behind the info curve waiting for this. Not sure if I want the Gold Edition or not (difference unknown) and Looking at the Subsim store, there appears no link for the US Amazon purchase, only other countries. Went to Amazon and don't see any way to credit Subsim with the purchase.

I bought the game sh5 in march 2012 and once at home i saw that it was requiered to be conected to internet all the time. My adsl is constantly dropping and that's why i still have not installed the sim.

My sh5 is version 1.0.0

Reading comments in SUBSIM i know that in order to install MODS it is needed to update it to version 1.2. And this is possible by internet, but, once it is updated to version v1.2, how can i download the uplay update sh5 and to follow for steps to desconected from internet??????

I am new in subsim and my knowledge in computers is very very low. So, if you can help me, remember that i need very crear instructions.

Thank you in advance

Update to 1.2:

got to windows explorer (or file manager)

go to C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\Support\GameUpdater --- doubleklick the file "gu.exe".

this should update you to version 1.2.

then have a look at post #4 (page #1) on this thread to do the correct settings in UPlay if you want to play offline....

Does one have to go through those "£%R% tutorial missions before you get to the offline mode - I'm about to un-install !!!

Ducimus
07-08-12, 07:30 AM
I'm pretty sure I said it before, but i'll say it again.

The title of this thread is misleading. Ubi did NOT remove the DRM. Uplay IS the DRM. The DRM is not removed until:
1.) You no longer have to install Uplay
2.) The game no longer has to pass a check by Uplay.

All Ubisoft has done, is add an OFFLINE MODE IN UPLAY. Vanjast wanted to install his legit non steam version? Guess what, Uplay now acts just like steam because it has an offline mode, where as before it didn't act like steam and demanded a constant internet connection.

In short, now it acts like steam. (which personally I'm ok with)
If your expecting DRM free like SH3 and SH4? Umm, no.

Sailor Steve

So, instead of being able to play without being connected to the net, I have to play without being connected to the net?

The complaint was always about having to be connected to play, not what it was called, so what's the difference?

The difference is if you have to have a gateway application installed or not in order to run the game. SH5 has a gateway app, its called Uplay. Even with an offline mode, you have to login to verify your credentials at least once. If for whatever reason your credentials are lost or reset on your machine, you'll have to logn to re establish your credentials again.

Sh3 and Sh4 have no gateway application. No login is requried at all, no credentials need to be stored.

This is why the title is misleading. There IS a DRM in SH5. All that was changed, was the addition of an offline mode that should have been there to begin with.

hmmm, I have "enable cloud save synchronization" disabled, but when I start the game it still says "please wait while save games are synchronized from server" and pauses for 20 or 30 seconds every time I start up the game. This is really annoying because savegames take forever to load in the first place, I'd rather just be able to load the savegame as soon as the game is done loading. Is there something extra I need to do in order to disable savegame syncing?
