View Full Version : Possible Mini SubSim gathering?

I really, REALLY, miss the interaction that went on at SubSim Meet 2008.
I am interested in seeing if We near the Ohio area could get a small gathering together.
Just a day at the very lest where anyone within driveing range could meet face to face and tell lies, tall tales, and whatever.
:haha:
What do you Ohio people think?
:hmmm:
nikimcbee
10-29-11, 03:22 PM
How 'bout Chicago?
nikimcbee
10-29-11, 03:25 PM
I'm still trying to get Jim and Tarjak to show up again.:hmmm: We had a great time at last year's event at August's house.
Madox58
10-29-11, 03:26 PM
That's not Ohio last time I checked.
:haha:
But I will put up $100 dollars for the one that travels the greatest distance to whereever We do this.
nikimcbee
10-29-11, 03:27 PM
Go to Portland, Personal tour of PT-boat, Sprucegoose, USS Blueback. Plus "Busters" Texas BBQ.:hmmm:

Let me check my map.
Lebensraum for Ohio?:hmmm:
Madox58
10-29-11, 03:32 PM
Well, You should do a 'Your Area' Mini SubSim meet.
That's why I asked about just Ohio area and near members.
Gas prices and such are reducing our travel ranges.
By breaking down to say a State area?
It would make it easier for those that can't afford a World Wide Meet.
Even just a day meeting is worth the effort.
Madox58

Let me check my map.
Lebensraum for Ohio?:hmmm:
You have totally lost me on that.
:88)
I'd think Berlin, Ohio would be Cool for several reasons myself.
Herr-Berbunch
10-29-11, 03:53 PM
Lebensraum means Living Room, and was Hitler's excuse for expanding Germany's room to live. Hitler wasn't the first to use it, but I think he's the most (in)famous for it.
I think McBee is suggesting Ohio expands it's area to include Chicago or Portland.
The public service announcment has been brought to you by Herr-Berbunch, who even for a hundred bucks wouldn't be able to make it to Ohio, Chicago, or Portland - even for a Buster's Texas BBQ :D
Madox58
10-29-11, 03:59 PM
If it's expanded to include other areas?
It's no longer a Mini-Meet.
Besides, have you driven from Ohio to Chicago lately?
One word.
SUCKS!!
And I'm amazed the SUCKS actually went throught!
I guess the filter is smart enuff to know driveing from Ohio to Chicago does SUCK!

Neither of us have yet gotten over the trauma of meeting you last time...especially after your antics at the TexMex restaurant hat night :DL
Well, depends on when/where we're talking. I don't/can't really drive, but if there's, say, more than 5 regulars that show up, there are a few Navy attractions to look at and it's not too too soon, I would be willing to bus in.
Although to be honest, I'm kind of holding on to my cash for a big Subsim meet, maybe sometime next year? I think latest talk of it involved something on the West Coast, possibly?
Jimbuna
10-29-11, 05:31 PM
West coast!! :o
Surely it's Londons turn.
Sledgehammer427
10-29-11, 10:56 PM
Surely it is Jim, and I can only hope I can make it to London when that day comes.
Now that I'm living in the northeast I can assist with planning if it comes this way again. I'll even be able to provide transportation to some extent.
but that is if it makes its way up here again.
Sure did enjoy last years meet!
I meant for the next one in North America, whenever that happens. Right now going to Britain is not very likely for me, sadly. Although who knows, maybe by the time we get around to it, that'll change...

I'd rather drive than fly. Have driven there once, flown there once. We actually got there quicker when we drove, even though we printed our directions off of the internet five minutes before we left and got lost twice. :haha:
My passport doesn't expire for another 10 years or so.... Privateer, everything connected to Chicago sucks. CCIP what part of N.A. are we talking about? Shucks Indiana is a little more central location. Not so sure about their attractions that would appeal to us though.
Sailor Steve

It looks to me like everyone is stretching the point of Privateer's original post. He was just curious to see if any local members would be interested in getting together for a day.
On the other hand, I'm aware of at least four members who live here in Utah, and I've never even been able to get any of them to talk to me, much less agree to get together for lunch. People talk about cross-country trips, but in reality seem to be reluctant to even meet each other.
People vary! I suppose that's the beauty of actual meets, the people who go are really eager to meet the others. It's fine if not everybody who frequents Subsim feels that way. I suppose going to hang out with a bunch of people from the internet might not seem like the most mature or interesting thing to some people. On the other hand, I've had awesome experiences with this sort of thing. Met some of my best real-life friends through mutual hobbies online.
Otherwise just tossing some ideas around, really. It's never a bad idea to think about these things, since it takes forever for Subsim meets to come together. I'm sad that I missed the recent meets, so I'm certainly looking forward to my next chance!

Then there's me:D.
It'd be fun to put together something for next year. We kicked around the idea of London at the last subsim meet. (2010)
The sad thing about the last one, everybody bailed at the last second, but it worked out, we had a great time, made some new friends, saw A LOT of ships.
I'm game for something in the Pacific NW, (seattle, Portland, or SanFran) or Chcago would be cool, the subsim clubhouse is always a winner too.
A big problem is getting someone to host and organize everything.

On a side note, I've been kicking around the idea of going to London on my own.:hmmm:
I don't know how expensive it would be though, or where to stay, yadda yadda yadda.

Some people prefer to keep their Internets Tubes life separate from their real life, and prefer to keep their net friends separate from their real-life friends.
People are different. That's to one thing that is same about all of us. :D

Portland would be awesome. Lots to see and within good driving distance for me :D
I also think San Diego has been overlooked for alot of these things. Great weather, rich Naval history including good museums (Walking the deck of the USS Midway is always a good day out).

Isn't he getting wed next year? In York iirc? York subsim meet 2012 it is then! :yeah:
That's the original York (aka Eboracum or Jorvik), not the one in PA, not the New one in, err, New York.
I'd be up for anywhere in the UK, but it'd have to be cheapish!!!

Actually I did participate in a the miniest mini-meet possible last May. You can't have a much smaller meeting than two people.

I guess I should have named this thread.........
'If you can Spit on Ohio without leaveing Home, what about a Mini-SubSim meet?'
:har:
Steve seems to be the only one that got the whole point!!
(I still have my doubts about him though!)
I could see a day type thing to Cleveland as the USS Cod is there.
But it's only open from May through September.
In Toledo the SS Willis B. Boyer is there.
But it's closed until spring also!
Ohio is a kind of land locked area so a really great attraction is out of the question until Spring at the earliest.
(At least the 'Sea' Type attractions)
Now if you want to see where Col. Crawford was tortured and burned at the stake?
I'm not far from there!

Cinncinnati has a lot of Cool stuff nearby!
Just depends on the time of year to enjoy them.
Go a bit North at the right time?
You 'could' find me wondering amoungst the Mid-Evil Gang.
:03:
I've been on stage there before!
:haha:
And Nancy has pictures to prove it!
:yep:
So, Frau?
Are you up to a simple one day meeting just because it can be done?
Nancy would gladly come with me even though she does not play SH Games.
(She'd hope Jim would show up!!:hmmm:)
Others close enuff to make it a simple MINI, as in SMALL, as in LOCAL
kind of thing?
What do you all think?

I don't know, I couldn't find a listing for "Paddlewheeler" in the GWX Renown Chart. :O:
Seriously, though, Tall Stacks is pretty cool.

@privateer:
Would you believe, in all these years I have never been to the Ren Festival. And there's something-something-and-pottery! It's like you've won the lottery!
Not really a naval attraction but there's also the museum at Wright-Patt outside of Dayton. Never been there either! Okay, I take that back, I think we may have done a very quick run-through when I was very young, because somehow I can remember being with my aunt and uncle (who live in Greenville) and seeing a lot of aerospace type stuff and I can't imagine where else that would've been. :hmmm:
Or maybe my aunt and uncle went and just showed me pictures. :haha:
Anyhoodle... yeah, it might be nice to meet up somewhere fairly local and hang out.

That is one killer thing you MUST spend at lest one day at!!
We drive all the way down there just to have that fun!!
Don't believe what they tell you on TV or the Radio.
It's MUCH better!!
I'll see if I can get some pictures of my one and only Stage appearance there.

Too poor to travel? I don't think you count as local to Ohio so are therefore not invited by default. Unless you become rich, and can make it to Ohio... :hmmm: Would you want to, should be the question, although this Ren Festival thing does have Queen Elizabeth (the original, I'm guessing, not the current monarch II, nor the ocean liner). So let's sum it up if it is worth it -
QE + Privateer + Nancy - Jim - TarJak - McBee + FK + Gimpy - Steve + 1480 - me - any water = x
x = ?
Answers on a postcard to the usual address, please, folks. :D
