Henry Mancini, Ennio Morricone - what should I say? If you like movies or music or both, nothing more must be said, beside the giants of more classical soundtracks like Goldsmith, Williams and Barry, no compilation of movie composers is complete without these two musical magicans.
I have lost my CD with Mancini music (in fact have misplaced or thrown it away many months ago, I fear), and since it was an MP3-download and I never took the time to make notes of the titles, I simply have no overview on the many pieces by Mancini. If you check Amazon, you will note what a pain it is to make a selection, a choice for just one album giving you the best overview of all his famous pieces and themes.
Same goes for Morricone. Another CD compilation I got as a download and then have lost, without kinowing the titles (original Italian titles, which makes it even worse). I am looking for a compilation of his best and famous pieces and themes from movie and TV, from the Italo Westerns over his stunning Leone/America-soundtrack, to modern TV films.
MP3 albums would be preferred, since it saves plenty of money. Anyone having a tip for a comoilation of 2-3 CDs(^=MP3s)?
And since I am at it, in the 80s, when the first soundtrack album for E.T. was released, there was a solo-piano ending theme on it which then blended into some orchesytral composition, but alsways focussing on the piano. These pieces, if I remember correctzly, never was part of the poriginal movie score to be heared in the movies. Does anyone know what I mean and where I could get it?
Tak, I am putting special hopes on your expertise! You teachv music and once said something like that you have a special interest for soundtracks and think that most people underestimate their importance (something on which I agree).

Google the name and then Discography. You'll have a selection of lists of everything they ever recorded. At least then you can get an overview of what you might want.

That's right the problem, as I indicated: there are too many titles (which in almost all cases I cannot attribute to the music anyway).
German Amazon for example gives you over 1300 entries for MP3 recordings related to Mancini. The number of albums related to "Morricone" also goes into the hundreds. :dead: Much is double recording and foreign recording, but still: both of these two created incredibly many pieces, themes, and albums.
I hoped somebody had a tip for a solid "Best of" with 2 or 3 CDs, a tip relating to the included content as well as the recording's quality.

I'm sorry, but I must hate you now. BOTH of you. And my gift to you is this:

Actually I used play it with a band I was in.

At my work, we have many movie soundtracks and some compilations of film music. I'll see what I can find.

I was doing the initial bass-line, hence the reference to Steve playing it. :O:

For a start, I got this compilation for cheap money in the wee hours of this morning. Not complete nor especially original, and not even all tunes are by Mancinini but just have been adapted by his orchestra, but a good start (and in itself a nice CD btw, it it doing its third continuous round over here).
You can check the titles for test playing, 30 sec each. You might be surprised how many tunes you know, just never had attributed to Mancini. And there is so very very much more by this guy...

ok, found some stuff, here are the relevant ones:
Mancini:
- The Mad, Mad World Of Soundtracks: 60s compilation, only one track, The Party)
- High Noon 25 Artists - One Song (of course only one track by him)
- The Pink Panther (Der rosarote Panther) Music From The Film Score composed And Conducted By Haenry Mancini
- Themes From Classic Science Fiction, Fantasy And Horror Films Music Composed By Henry Mancini , Hans J. Salter, Herman Stein(2 tracks; great compi btw)
I found also a very interesting vid, you might not know that he made the music for this: Olympiade '72 München; Acht berühmte Regisseure sehen die Spiele der XX. Olympiade, music by Mancini
Morricone :
- The Oliver Stone Connection (1 track: U-turn)
- Mission To Mars Original Soundtrack
- Once Upon A Time In America Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
- Ennio Morricone: The Legendary Italian Westerns (The Film Composers Series, Vol. 2)
- The Good, the Bad & the Ugly Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
If you are interested in any of those, I can write down the label codes; also note that under German copyright law we have the right to copy music for private purposes (Recht auf Privatkopie, §53 UrhG)

Thanks for taking the time, Penguin. The complete soundtrack for Once Upon a Time in america I actually do have somewhere. Anyhow, let'S not allow this to turn into real work for you or anybody, I also am looking for a compilation, the kind of "Best of"-boxes you can see in the shops, with the highlights of the past 30 years on 2 or 3 CDs - something like that.
But still, thanks for taking the time.

If you're talking about Ennio Morricone you must not forget his work C'era una volta il West (Once upon a time in the West)

not a fan of Western movies myself but I do watch that movie anytime for the soundtrack alone (got the soundtrack on CD too)

@Skybird: np, actually this wasn't very time.intensive, just a quick database query:)
Anyway, for Mancini I'd go with the Themes from compilation, for Morricone I'd go with the Western Themes one.
My personal favorite movie soundtrack is still the the one from Koyaanisqatsi, with music by Phil Glass, good stuff!
