View Full Version : Great White shark kills US diver in Australia
A Great White shark has killed a US diver in what is thought to be the second fatal shark attack in Western Australia in 12 days. The diver, 32, who has not been named, was diving alone off Rottnest Island near Perth on Saturday.Witnesses on his boat saw a large amount of bubbles surfacing, followed by the diver's body which police said had obviously fatal injuries. Two people on the boat described the shark as a 3-metre (10ft) Great White. Sharks attack more often in cloudy weather and police said the day had been overcast. The man's name and hometown have not been released, but authorities said he was living in Australia on a working visa.

No offence meant towards the deceased, but that was a very stupid move. Why would you ever want to dive ALONE in an area with is almost always crawling with sharks on an overcast day... :nope:

Someone was attacked yesterday here in Ore-gone as well. (off Newport). I think you would have to be crazy/stupid to go surfing this time of year, as this is when GWS are really active hunting seals.:dead:

What do they hope to achieve from killing this shark? I understand the motive as "revenge" but honestly, what are we getting out of it? The shark was doing what it does best, hunting. The fact that this guy chose to be alone at the wrong time of day and with the wrong conditions does not mean it is the sharks "fault".

Good point...but hasn't revenge long been one of mans reactions/preferences?

To heck with killing the shark. I say we invade Australia, install a puppet regime which will make people from the U.S. stay out of the water on cloudy days. We must protect our citizens.

And this is why I don't go swimming in the ocean here in South Australia ,between the Great White's and this little fella http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_ringed_octopus swimming in the oceans seems a little like a lottery so it's better to be safe than sorry and just swim in a pool!:03:

Not revenge at all. Just gives them an excuse to reopen beaches. Not that they do much good: http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/politics/shark-hunts-a-hollywood-response-to-real-horror-20111024-1mgb3.html

Ya'll are totally missing the point. The sharks are just doing their job. Remember, What is Australia?
A penal colony. (no you're thinking of penile)
Now if these people were able to escape, just think of how much more dangerous the world would be.
These sharks are there to keep the criminals on the colony.

That would also explain the salt water crocs that hang out around there. The Oceans around Australia are just super sized moats filled with critters that are supposed to keep them aussies from escaping and subjecting their odd dialect on the rest of the world.:rotfl2:
Too bad the invention of air travel neutralized the moat.
(I kid...I kid...I've never met an Australian I didn't like...maybe that was because I had no idea what the hell they were saying...and have you ever voice chatted with a drunk Tasmanian...eeeeek!!!...:har:).

I believe it was Frank Buck who once said, much more eloquently than I can, that once humans move from their human cultural environment into the animal environment, they cease to be humans and are now animals subject to all the risks that all other animals face. That risk includes being considered a food source.
I really can't fault the shark for doing what sharks are supposed to do. I have sympathy to his family on their loss.

That's well said, I wish everyone would remember that. People in cities especially seem to be distanced from the nature, and that goes for all nature. I'm thinking specifically of dogs here. It's not just once or twice that I have witnessed this to happen:
Random pedestrian: "Ooo, cute doggie!"
The doggie growls and snaps quickly with its teeth.
Random pedestrian: "Ohmygod it tried to bite me! Why did it try to bite me?!"
Me: "Maybe because you approached quietly from behind and without any warning sticked your hands on it?" (Not even worth mentioning what I would do if someone did that to me.)
Random Pedestrian: "Ohmygod is it aggressive?!"
Me: "That's a great way to find out. Good day to you."
And in some way I also see this every time news like "bear attacked a hiker" or "shark attacked a surfer" news come up. We seem to be shocked when animals are suddenly not some cute fuzzy toys and the nature is not a giant petting zoo. Mind boggles.

How is the shark supposed to be able to read this sign when it is not only on dry land but facing AWAY from the water?
Not to mention the cultural hubris to assume that ALL sharks naturally can read English.:doh:

Does the shark have a green card? Does it send the meat chuncks it bites back to Mexico? AAAnd just think how racist that shark is! A great WHITE shark.

I think we need to spend more money on Great multiracial shark education prog-rams, such as after school reading and basketball clubs to keep the sharks from eating the surfers.

Got to agree with these comments from the link:
John B. is exactly right. The sharks are doing nothing wrong. We're invading their territory and they're reacting to it. When you go fishing you put a worm on a hook, throw it in the water and (hopefully) a fish bites it. When you throw yourself into the water with the sharks, you're doing the same thing, only you're the worm and you're hoping that they don't bite. Everything in life has its risks. Like has been said before, "You makes your choices and you takes your chances."

That's the easiest vote on the ballot. The state run liquor stores are a remnant of the bygone post-Prohibition era. Hundreds of thousands of square feet leased... hundreds of state employees... all to sell one product? Absolutely ridiculous. Also, the No campaign has been very sleazy.
However, even if it passes in the long run it probably doesn't matter. This state always finds an alternate way to squeeze funds outta us. :dead:

Way back in '74 my ex and I honeymooned in Yellowstone. We actually watched a woman push her little girl up to a bear so she could get a picture. Fortunately nothing came of her stupidity. We were in the car with the windows rolled up.
