Now, I know that the GWX team disbanded before completion of Grey Wolves for SHIV, and they had their very understandable reasons for doing so. But, being a fan of GWX and SHIII I just though I would ask you guys what mods I can put on SHIV to make it similar to GWX on SHIII. Am currently running TMO 2.2 update, and RSRDC TMO V5xxx update.

RFB already does a real good job in the graphics department, and TMO is no slouch either. Both have great AI components, so you're pretty much already covered.

GWX4 would have been for u-boats. Operation Monsun covers most of the bases, lacking a lot of the graphics components GWX4 would have contained. It also is less than perfect in the crew management, but overall is still a great mod. Unfortunately the other things that would have been added - realistic harbors, canals and bridges, among other things - are not available for SH4, and at this time it seems unlikely they ever will be.

The more important item - SH3 Commander - has no counterpart in SH4, and that makes me sadder than anything else.

I agree there. SH3 Commander was awesome!!!

Both the RFB crew and Ducimus with TMO think that game play totally trumps graphics eyecandy. Both crews are perfectly willing to dump pretty stuff for better gameplay. The eyecandy ends when it impacts game performance or interferes with AI. So both have a tendency to be a bit minimal on extra graphics.

If you remember, load times for GWX were very long compared to the stock game. The SH4 modding crews really hated that. But they have graphically improved the game with extra targets, environmental goodness and the like. The bottom line is that they did it with a great deal of restraint. And neither Ducimus nor any of the RFB team is a whiz at graphics anyway. The GWX team was lousy with incredible graphics talent.

But there is another alternative, Fall of the Rising Sun, which in my view gives the closest visual impression to the GWX experience. Lurker added a bunch of targets to RSRD as well. I really like FOTRS a lot and you really ought to try it.

You will never get the dark and foreboding experience out of SH4 that you did with SH3, and that's not a GWX thing. SH4 is just too colorful and bright for our taste as warriors and nobody has been able to give it the atmosphere that SH3 has.

You know, SH3 just FEELS like you're in an old sub 70 years ago. SH4 has that bright shiny feeling like you just woke up on a cruise ship. Heck, I still love the game and mostly play with TMO/RSRDC.

I'll have to check out FOTRS. From what I have read its a collection of improved, already existing mods. Everyone that has tried it seems to like it.

Variation is the spice of life.
Rockin Robbins is spot on with his post.
SH4 is for the left brain, and SH3 is for the right brain.
If you are bi-brain, you can do both. If not choose the one that suits you.
I am not sure where SH5 comes in.

Actually that's not me. I could never be arrogant enough to be a fighter pilot. I was referring to the old insult "If you had half a brain you'd be dangerous!" I always replied "I do have half a brain, and for your information I am dangerous!"

On the other hand, do you know why Top Gun didn't win any awards? Because it was a remake of sorts of the movie that won the very first Oscar for best picture, way back in 1927 - Wings.

Top Gun also didn't win any awards because it wasn't a very good move.

An eufemism for "Top Gun also didn't win any awards because it STINKS ON ICE".

To be fair, Wings wasn't all that good either, but for a silent movie in 1927 it was revolutionary, and still has some of the best flying sequences ever made.

.

On that thought, as a reply on the subject in general. It's long been my thought that lighting has MUCH to do with it. One "problem" with atmosphere is that SH4, plain flat out, renders lighting differently. It's more efficient and advanced (in a technical sense as far as programming goes), and, if you know how to work the shader file you can do a bit with it. However, despite that, it's still not quite the same as the lighting from Sh3 which is in reality, less efficient, more clunky, and frankly, artificial - yet it still looks better, at least in my eye.

I experimented with this a long time ago, and you can see the comparison here: SH3's Halo lighting verses SH4's shader lighting.

Along with the lighting is the overall ambient lighting. Imagine Sh3 halo lighting system with a lower ambient light setting. These pictures are with the shader lighting, not the halo lighting. Try to imagine Halo lights with the appropriate amount of ambient lighting.

Main reason i haven't done this even though i experimented with it, is because of historical accuracy concerns, and getting Halo lighting to work in SH4 is a ton of work, and i'm not even sure if the game engine properly supports it anymore. For each area with halo lights you have to wrap with with invisible objects with another controller attached to them to prevent the halo from "shining through" walls. I don't recall of that controller worked or not. Again, it is a HUGE amount of work.

That's my 2 cent analysis on ambience between the two games.

It may be a huge amount of work, but it sure looks good! :yep:

It gets mentioned in all Silent Hunter titles. I don't care to get too far into this particular subject because its old news, and better left alone. But the gist is.....get a group of people larger then any other group, get them all to follow one personality, run that group like a corporation with all the behavior thereof, and throw in a exacting and masterful forum marketing campaign on top if it all, and you'll have a three letter acronym that will be repeated on the forum in every context imaginable for years to come. Even after the original players surrounding the subject and any drama associated with it have moved on.

+1 Ducimus, plus SH3 had/has a larger following due to Das Boot* first of all, plus coming out after the problematic SH2, plus other factors I won't get into here either. :03:

*Still of course the greatest sub film, as well as one of the greatest war films ever.

I laugh not because of your statement, since it's true. I laugh because the movie is now so old that people don't know that the almost-20-year-old Aces Of The Deep was also patterned after Das Boot. :D
