Clashes between riot police and protesters broke out in front of the parliament building in Athens.Greek riot police have fired tear gas and fought running battles with protesters, amid a 48-hour general strike that has paralysed the country.Some protesters hurled petrol bombs and stones at the police, as a march by tens of thousands of people in central Athens turned violent.Many Greeks are furious at plans being discussed in parliament to cut thousands of jobs and raise taxes.The government says the measures are needed to keep the economy afloat.Greece is struggling to reduce a huge government deficit amid fears it may default and set off a eurozone crisis.

Well after all the Greek-bashing that went on the internetz the previous year, the conclusion is one. Greece was not the cause, it was just the canary in the mine. And believe me the canary is almost dead. The real question is what will the miners do now. Ehm... and you know who are the miners, don't you?

Indeed, never mind that personal comsumption has actually fallen in Greece for a few years preceeding this mess, and that as others stated here it is and will affect a lot more countries than Greece.

Why does this wonder you? All people in Greece are affected by the austerities, so why should they not strike?
When they strike here, they make sure that there's still emergency personnel available at the hospitals - though if you have an appointment for a boob job that day you have bad chances ;)
I can't imagine the doctors in Greece handling it differently.

Well if emergency cover is provided then fine but the article I watched on Sky suggested that may not be the case.
