What is that thing? I just noticed it and can't imagine what it is? It appears to disappear when I surface or go deeper, but at periscope level it's there sticking out of the side of my conning tower and up above the waves! Is that detectable by other ships? What is it? heh

Radio mast
There's no way to manually control the raise/lower (at least that I'm aware of). TheBeast's Equipment Upgrades Fix mod has an addon that lowers it completely at periscope depth, but I found between 20-30 metres depth it actually stuck out of the bottom of the boat (right through the hull!), which was hideously immersion breaking, so I dropped the addon and just got used to it.
Afaik it has no effect on your detection, since there's no manual control of any kind we'd better hope it doesn't! :O:

Ahh, nifty. Thanks! :woot:
Tell that no good Funker(Radio man) to lower his mast! :D
Nice to see Radion where as lazy as I was when I was one. :haha:

Seems it is visible. :(

I hadn't raised my scope by that point...
Erm, Maic0 how do I do that? I had "secure communication" from sober's SAS crew mod active. There's no commands on the officer bar or via conversation or MCCD options to lower anything.

you can't lower it. It's totally automatic.
It shouldn't be giving away your position. There's no sensor attached to it :hmmm:

Maybe a wave crested my conning tower or something perhaps? It just seemed odd that I got a few radio messages about periscope sighted before I raised my attack scope.
No biggie, got all three of those guys anyway. ;)

And using external views isn't hideously immersion breaking? :sunny:

Hehe, fair point I suppose! :O: You know my position on eye-candy, it's a shame to waste all that graphical goodness... though I don't 'cheat' with it, I do like watching the boat surface/dive etc. But seeing a white stick poking through the pressure hull is pushing things too far! ;)
Here's what it looks like (zoom in as lighting's not the best): http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/560915367832733849/1FBED00A8079410E485AD9F351224D8256DCA36E/

It also annoy me. Itīs a possible mess with ids. This was so common on SH stock games structure (well at least since SH3). This perhaps can explain this erratic behaviour even after TheBeast have lowered it.
Another idea could be completely delete it or make it really minor using a 3d editor.

With GR2 files you do not have IDs. The 'ID' is the name of the entry that through some algorithm gets converted to an ID.
It's not the 3rd periscope, it's the radio antennea. When TheBeast tried to lower it he probably didn't fully understand what I did to make it do what it does and thus messed it up.
