Hello everyone,
I played SH4 back in the day and recently came back to it, however..i never really modded it at all when i played before. I started messing around the last few days with a few but i had a few questions.

Which mods out there will give me the most additional targets?(boats to sink lol) Ive heard TMO or RFB add some new ones...but i wasnt sure if i wanted to up the gameplay difficulty yet until i re-learn how to play. Is there a way to add the additional boats without some of the other features of the mod? Ive also read some posts where people have added boats they download into the pool of boats that the campaign randomly spawns for you...how hard is that to learn how to do?

Ive seen a few posts about a merchant pack here and there but most of the links seem to be dead.

What other mods would everyone reccomend for someone getting back into sh4?

thanks in advance.

I haven't played it in a long time but I believe that FOTRS adds quite a few new boats without ramping up the difficulty factor too much, it's based on TMO 1.7 I think. Might be a good place to start re acquainting yourself with submarine warfare.

As far as merchant packs are concerned post in the that thread and someone may update the links.

Yes, Fall of the Rising Sun adds the most additional targets to the game. It's the GWX of SH4 in that it emphasizes graphical improvements. I enjoy the gameplay too.

"Run Silent, Run Deep the Campaign" (RSRDC) adds around 50 different ships to the stock game. There are different versions of RSRDC to be compatible with either the stock game, TMO, or RFB.

Does it work with the U boat missions? Or does FotRS work with the uboat missions too for that matter? Is it possible to remove the uboat missions addon without doing a complete re-install if i wanted? Thanks again for the help guys!

Does it work with the U boat missions?

Regarding RSRDC v550, if you're asking does it work with the game version 1.5 (which is the U-Boat Missions Addon edition, or for some, the purchased Golden Edition) the answer is yes. Same with Fotrs, TMO, RFB. There have been editions of most all mods for both version 1.4 (pre U-Boat addon), and the current version 1.5 (with the U-Boat addon). You know what version you have by the version number at the bottom right of the "Main Menu" page of the game.

If you're asking, does the German side of play get the benefits that some mods give that the American side of play gets? The answer is no. Many mods looked at the addition of the German side of play as a UbiSoft ploy to rake in additional revenue to what was considered to be an American Campaign of sub warfare in the Pacific. Early mods were designed to modify this original gameplay. When the German side was pushed onto the game (with the 5th patch), for the most part, the German gameplay was ignored.

The author of RSRDC also made a Silent Hunter 4, version 1.5 mod which expanded the German side of play called Operation Monsun found HERE (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=134922). This may be your best mod option if the German side of play is what you want to play the most.

The compatibility in most mods to offer both a SH4 v1.4 version AND a v1.5 was mainly lost do to the complex differences of the two game versions. It's not that there weren't mod editions for both game versions, but the authors mainly decided to choose which version they wanted to continue to support if a problem was found with the mod. The 1.5 version is the most current, so that's the one version most mods have kept as their latest compatible mod. You're more likely to find a chicken hen having teeth then to find some of the eariler 1.4 mod editions still around.
