View Full Version : And Yet Again The Frustration

Re-installed after the last problems. Been running a new career, playing a couple hours a night. Sank seven small ships over a five-day period. Ran into a large convoy. Made the perfect setup. Went to periscope depth. Sank to 20 meters. Sank to 30 meters. Ordered back up to periscope depth and went to flank speed. Sank to 40 meters. Sank to 50 meters. Got out of the game and once again I'm done with it.
I can't run SH3 the way I want to. SH4 is the better game, but doesn't have any of the good stuff I love in SH3. No better harbors, no canal locks, no ship names.
Once again I'm done.
???
What happened? I don't really understand.

Was it damage or a realism mod that caused that? Or that horrible "ever falling" bug?

No damage. No problems. Just dive the Type IX and it keeps on diving. It wouldn't be so bad if it happened the first day, but a month-and-a-half into the patrol, set out in August and it's late September and it's the first time I had to dive.

Did you order a crash dive at any time during that session?

It's a good hook-up and fixes two of my problems in the same go, no "mod" to load :D

Nope. This was the first time I dove the entire patrol.
Maybe it's the whole "Type IX in August" thing. I'll try a patrol in the old Type II. What have I got to lose?
Or maybe it's a "malfunction" thing.

Once again I'm done.
Sorry to hear that Steve. I know it can be frustrating at times, but for me the good outweighs the bad. Hope at some point you have a change of heart as it'd be good to have you back in the pack! :arrgh!:
That is a weird one, I've never run into that before.:hmmm: Just out of curiosity, how did you order periscope depth? Was it with the "p" key on the keyboard, or the in game shortcut button, or some other way?

As far as I know only SH Commander offers malfunctions and sabotage. I for the life of me can't picture a saboteur who would jam the dive-planes or damage the buoyancy regulators while still on the boat (you did say it was a month into the patrol).

I have a change of heart three or four times every day. I'm quick to anger and just as quick to feel like an idiot for doing so. I woke up at 0530 this morning with ideas about trying a few quick 'practice' careers to check different boats in the same situation.

'P' key, always. I never use anything else. As I say, I'm going to do some testing to see if it's just the Type IX. And then I'll reload the game once again, and test some more.

Of course I use Commander. I consider it more important than any supermod. At this stage of the war I have malfunctions enabled, but not sabotage, based on the idea that saboteurs in German ports in 1939 were unlikely. I'll reload that career first and see what happens. Oh, and as for "a month into the patrol", this was the first time I actually took the boat under. Silly me, not doing a test dive every day.
We'll see what happens. Meanwhile I was motivated to do a little research on August 19 patrols and their outcomes, for which I started another thread.

It happens if you have a broken hydroplane... maybe a malfunction.
I have a type IXB but malfunctions I leave disabled.
Had a similar problem after being damaged from something I dont remember.
`Das boot`needed to run at 4-5knt to keep it`s depth but still the trim showed a downed aft. There was no flooding anymore.
Anyway... first dive? Did you submit your boat to sea trials? Test max depth, underwater range and buoyance after reaching an area deep enough !:salute:
Try start a new patrol and perform some tests before the action time :yeah:
'P' key, always. I never use anything else.
I suspected as much but, wanted to be sure.

This happened to me too. I always thought of Das Boot with the busted dive planes. But the role playing element wears off after it happens a few times and destroy a great patrol. Funny enough it always seems to happen in an IX type for me as well.
...SS, try without malfunctions - if something is broken it may have the effect you speek of. ??

That's not something you can turn off mid-patrol. The career is as good as lost.

Okay, this is interesting. I loaded up the game. Since I saved underwater and within sight of the convoy (this was in frustration after the problem, and was not the cause of the problem) I figured I would get the old 'Death Dive' and be dead. Instead, I found myself in the same position - 60 meters, nose up, full throttle, not climbing at all but only sinking very slowly. Four emergency blows later I finally made the surface. Slunk away from the convoy at slow speed, then headed for home. On the way I ran into a lone ore carrier and put it on the bottom.
Barring sudden encounters with planes and destroyers I should make it home. Then we'll see about getting it fixed.

Jeez Steve,
Don't scare me like that! If you stop playin... well... let's just say things wouldn't be the same around here.
If you find the cause of the squirrel let us in on it, I might be using that boat in a while. As far as the mod goes, what is the "Das Boot" mod ya'll are talkin' about?
I've got 'malfunctions' selected and am now getting a little bit "iffy" on using it just for this very reason. If it's a malfunction that can be repaired, fine. But what about a 'malfunction' that takes out your boat and crew?! Not so fun.
Again, keep us posted on the fix for this.

PS; When ya get mad at the game we can always jump over to the Pacific for a time.

Oh, you haven't been around long enough. I don't play a lot more than I do. From July 2006 to January 2008 I didn't play at all.

I got stable for awhile, then it happened again.

Not to bring up old news, but to show that most of the time I don't play more than I do. If you take a look at threads started by me you'll see that I have spent a lot of time not playing the game, usually because something broke.
As far as the mod goes, what is the "Das Boot" mod ya'll are talkin' about?
I'm not sure which Das Boot mod you mean. There are several. I use a mod that puts Das Boot officers' faces on the screen, and one that puts them in the Crew Roster in the Damage Screen, and the Das Boot Sound Mod.

SH3 Commander's Malfunctions and Sabotage functions mostly give you annoying problems, not dangerous ones. The engines won't run at full speed. The periscope has a leak and is blurry all the time. SH3 won't let you repair them, but I'm pretty sure that saving and reloading the game resets everything, so you can 'fix' it after a fashion.
PS; When ya get mad at the game we can always jump over to the Pacific for a time.
I also play SH4, but I have a mental problem: I like to run several campaigns, one from each base and in different sub types, but I have to go forward in a linear fashion. This means that any time I have to start over, I need to start over in 1939. So I play SH3, SH4 Op Monsun and Aces Of The Deep still, all at the same time. If I ever get to 1942 I'll play SH4 in the Pacific, as well as reloading SH1.
I don't seem to be able to do it any other way.

I'm wondering if your the victim of a randomised events phenomena?
Frt/rear ratio edited- simulates trim control difficulties, boat slightly heavy at stern. Difficulty fine tuning depth at very slow speed.

Could be, but going to flank speed and full rise didn't help.

Ah, right...there's also a similar event whilst performing a crash dive iirc.

Ok. I'll gear up and overboard. I suspect external structural damage to the dive planes. Topside! Have the burning gear readied. Worst case we run home on surface and get a new boat .. see Helga.

Yes, I'm using DBSM + a couple of other sound mods that seem to work together.

Yah, I've already had the Blurry Attack Periscope and right away I knew it was the malfunctions setting which was OK. That was stuff I expected to have happen, the only problem was that it wasn't repairible, like you said. I put a repair crew on it anyway but it didn't leave until I reloaded the game. Those kinds of problems I am fine with, just so long as it doesn't sink my boat!!:O:

I play both games the same way and haven't had a boat with radar yet, after all this time playing. I just love to start at the beginning of the war (if I have to re-start a career). I just can't see starting in the middle of it. :salute:

I'm a little different there. When a captain dies or retires I start a new career at the same time and place. Another old habit left over from SH1.
Since I saved underwater and within sight of the convoy (this was in frustration after the problem, and was not the cause of the problem)
As I recently reinstalled SH3 and the GWX3 mod, it was frustrating for me to lose propulsion on my first run. Then I had a torpedo reloading problem, which I found discussed on a forum post that was related to me saving while submerged. Now this thread about not maintaining depth? Hmmm.
While a lot of experienced players may know about issues like this, it might be helpful to add a stickie for newbies and returning players documenting these known issues and how to avoid them or resolve/work around them when they occur? I'm wondering what other surprises await me, besides the obvious known hazards of ASW. Just a thought.

Honestly I think people should make an effort to transfer all those good resources we have in SH3, to SH5. SH5 is becoming fastly a well developed sim.
But instead of producing similar supermods / small mods to compete between themself, a big team with designed tasks would me more fruitful.
I wish I could help, but I haven't the necessary skill...
Maybe this is already happening, and I am the impatient bastard... sorry about that :O:
