View Full Version : Starting Career in 1939

Just picked up SH3 yesterday, and I'm liking it a lot so far, but I noticed something odd. I don't know if it's a bug or just me being picky. When I start a new career it brings me to the screen where I can select a year and Flotilla. By default 1942 is selected, and the 7th Flotilla is selected. Above the year drop-down it shows (1942) no matter what I select, and above the Floatilla drop-down it shows 7th Floatilla no matter what I select. Once I move on to the next screen the date shows as Sept. 1 1939, but when I click "Mission" (the big map on the wall) the document that comes up says something like "News for 1942". This bugs the heck out of me as it's supposed to be 1939 but, more importantly, I want to be sure I'm not setting myself up in 1942 somehow. Even those of us with a passing knowledge of WWII know there is a BIG difference between those years!

It's been a long time since I played vanilla, but I know in GWX those displays don't change. They're basically a part of the wallpaper. As long as the mission date in the office says '1939' you should be okay.
Glad you're enjoying the game and welcome aboard! :sunny:

That's what I assumed, but based on all the reading I've been doing about mods and bugs and whatnot (and prior SH2 experience) I wanted to be sure. Off to the high seas until I find some other petty thing to complain about :)

Have fun and good hunting! :arrgh!:
good luck m8ty! then when your board of vanilla install GWX on another install, then use the multish3 tool, so you can still play multiplayer with everyone.

Welcome aboard Scudder,
I also had some of these same questions. I am still playing this first patrol at the beginning of the war as I'm constantly resorting my Mods. I'm finally on the 2nd patrol again and the war is about to commence.
As was stated below, before you get too serious about you're current career or patrol, you might want to take a look at a couple of the larger mods out there as they improve the game dramatically. Everyone has their own choice as to which are "best" but everyone pretty much agrees on GWX3. I also play with SH3 Commander as it gives me historical options for the Career.
Now the game (for me) is a bit more immersed historically and the numerous graphic, sound and gameplay improvements make it a brand new game.
Welcome again and Good Hunting!

Thanks all for the warm welcome! In light of all the glowing reviews on the GWX mod (I've read a fair amount of the documentation myself, and I must say it's impressive.) I think I'll play a few missions to get my feet wet, (yeah, I had to go there) and then maybe start over with a clean install. Based on my SH2 experience I'd say on the first run through things will get tough around about late 1941 or so, and sooner or later I'll end up, *ahem* shall we say, "permanently submerged" :DL Maybe then I'll do a clean install and throw GWX into the mix.

Sounds like a plan. So long as you're having fun that's what really matters. Good hunting! :sunny:
