I received a PM this morning that has me stunned and totally amazed.
Because of some 'silly' little work I did and posted here?
Someone has found a reason to carry on in the face of major hardships.

I feel that by being a Member here and haveing a place to post different things?
SubSim deserves the Credit for that person being around to PM me.

I hope the person that PM'ed me will allow some further disclosure.

But if not?

SubSim did save a life!!

Having once been in "that" place where it was beginning to feel like I simply could NOT carry on... I can honestly say that one never knows what small, seemingly random thing might make the difference. For me it was a music video that was, at the time, in heavy rotation on MTV. (Yes, I am old enough to remember all the way back to the Cretaceous period when they still played music videos. :haha:) Seemed like whenever things would get really bad I would get up - even in the middle of the night - and switch on the TV and put it on MTV and within what seemed like a few minutes that video would appear. And it was just enough to get me through the next day, and then the next, until things changed for the better.

So I say that you just NEVER know. The (to you) random act of kindness or attention or just, you know, not being a jerk - may be the one thing that is "just enough" to get someone around you through another day, and then another. :yep:

Now if subsim saving a life isn't a good enough reason to donate, I have no clue what is.

Being a well documented "Richard Cranium"?

It's not in my nature to care much about those I've never had any exchanges with in one way or the other.

I did contact Jimbuna about the PM as I trust him as a Friend and Advisor.
(Don't ask me why I'd trust a suspected Limo Hijacker!)

But I feel SubSim is the major reason for the whole thing.
And therefore deserves the Credit!!

I hope Neal understands just what he has made possible!!

That's a nice bit of info you shared with us Jeff, hopefully it has a lasting effect!:yep: It's always sad when someone ends it, usually all they need is a shoulder and support, unfortunately a lot bottle it in.

Thanks for those kind words Jeff :sunny:

If the individual concerned gives permission to disclose I'm extremely confident many in our community will be moved by the details.

I'd certainly be looking toward a 'post of the year' award :sunny:

I think we're already quite moved, at least I am. Whoever is involved, and whatever was involved, well done all.

We are like a family, or cult, we have the odd disagreement, and we have the odd laugh (some very odd!), but we're always here - always someone ready to read a post and with a generally mature (in actions not necessarily in years) attitude which brings this site head and shoulders above the rest. In fact we're better than a family as we all choose to be here.

From all the contacts I have with this person?
(We now E-Mail each other nearly everyday)
They are doing great.

I still hold that had there been no SubSim?
I'd have never done what I did.
And they would never have found it.
There would have been no PM.

I still have not asked for permission to post anything told to me in the PM that blew me away.

I really hope that as the 2 of us build trust?
That person will post something on thier own.
Not to make me out as some Hero (Which I'm not by any means!).
But as a way to show all here, that what We do as Members has an impact way beyound what We think it has!

I wasnt goign to post anything in forums...until privateer sent me the link for this thread....

I am a very private person so when i first read this thread i was like WTH...then i pondered over it for a few days and thought alls cool....
then i thought hmmm i better post something to support privateer so ya all didnt think he was talking thru his hat...lol

so for the ones that have posted in here this is my original pm to privateer so it kinda explains it all in a few lines...

Hi

i have wanted to send you a thank you email for awhile so this is it....
I am a 50 yr old male living in australia...a couple of years ago my health nosedived and due to this i lost everything in my life...business home cars bikes etc etc etc...during the early months of this i was introduced to a 3d virtual world and with 24 hours a day sitting on my butt doing nothing i started playing with model remapping in this world and got the bug....now the virtual world i use has gr2 files and they do not allow access to the obj files so remapping was always hit and miss....over a period of time my health and mental state degenerated to the level where i was under mental treatments and counselling and one of the resuts of this was a number of suicide attempts i went thru......during this time i was looking at the gr2 files and how to extract models from them....i found your thread about the small program you were working on and downloaded the early version you did.....and damn i could extract the model files from the gr2;s...it wasnt perfect but to me it was wonderful...i was gobsamcked and excited so this took my interest to a new and higher level in 3d editing of maps...

The reason i wish to thank you is that your little app i found came at probably the lowest point in my life and it alone gave me a sense of purpose and direction and helped me to have a reason for being around...so yea in a way your unselfish actions in making this app are a large part of the reason i am still breathing today...you gave me a new sense of purpose

SO....I would like to thank you sir for your actions even tho you would have no idea how it could affect others in the world.....your a legend and I thank you

P.S i only joined this site to be able to message you...all the work i see in here is amazing but way above my ability...lol.....once again ty

so yea for the folks that are curious that is about it.....

on another train of thought...no i am not going to play submarine games...but for the record....i am amazed at the ability and talent in this site....when i look at the many screenshots i have seen in here i am staggered at all your stuff and it shows that what i do is really amateur hour...lol...

anyway folks take care all and ty for the ones that posted some kind words in this thread

and finally once again a big thank you to privateer...dude ya a legend

@monaro66: Welcome and thank you so much for sharing a little of your story with us. I hope that things are going well for you now and continue to do so in the future. :sunny:

Obviously you know this to some degree already, but I think if you stick around you will find this to be one of the friendliest and most supportive places you will ever encounter, online or off. And it's okay if you don't play any submarine games, we promise not to hold it against you. :D

Well I've heard him called a few things. :hmmm:

And it's usually good. :03:

Privateer seems to get to grips with the seemingly impossible ideas and make them come good. Of course, he's not alone, but there are very few here that can do what he does with such persistence (stubborness) and I will join you in publicly thanking him, and indeed call him a legend. He can also build walls, fit kitchens, and jump out of aeroplanes. But not all at once, I'm guessing?

:salute:Thank you, Privateer!:salute:

As for you, welcome aboard, even if it's just a passing visit - but I'd like to think not. And hell, I don't even know what a GR2 file is - let alone know about the obj files inside . So once you've fiddled with your world why not come back and work your magic in ours? There are other modders here that don't play! :D

It sound's like you've not had the best of times - I hope they're just around the next corner! - Herr-Berbunch

You sir make the effort we put into creating GWX all worthwhile.

I am sure Privateer has explained how close he and I are and in so doing I am very happy to have nominated this thread for a possible award this year.

In so doing I did not divulge any personal information or detail but that is irrelevant now since you have posted.

I salute you and will say (in the finest GWX tradition)....

Wow!...I knew the site was something special and Iv always been a proud member, but this is really amazing.

The people on this site have always shown that forums dont have to be about flamming, trolling etc (Just look at the Subsim Army of zombies).

But this takes it to a new level...

Many thanks to monaro66 for sharing your thoughts. For a very private person, its a great accomplishment to share this with all of us.
In my book that also makes you a great man - thanks for the trust.

Thanks for sharing part of your story here monaro66. I met Privateer face to face a couple fo years ago and can honestly say he's a gentleman and a scholar with some skills I can only dream of having.

Its fantastic that the work he's done has had such an impact on you and given you a spark to keep on going.

If you need a place to have a chinwag, then as you've seen Subsim will welcome you with open arms, even if your not that into submarines. You won't find a better place to spend your time once you've gotten to know some of the locals it's kid of like an international pub with no beer. (Or at least BYO).:03:

I'm pretty impressed that he would suggest me as a possible solution to the situation.

Most people, when makeing a suggestion concerning me, could not post those in an open forum without a Forum Cop
