View Full Version : Uninstalled GWX now CTD
ok so im getting a pain in the butt error with my steam version of SH3. Basically what I did is install it onto my steam, and then uninstall it (also deleted it on steam and reinstalled). I then went and installed GWX on another copy of it (a non steam copy). The mod runs fine on the other, but when I go into the steam version there is no sign of the mod other then in the single missions there are all the GWX extra missions, but now I cant even load a mission of any kind campaign or multiplayer or even the museum. All it does is crash to desktop saying that SH3 has stopped working, and its trying to fix the problem (we all know it doesn't). Anyway what do I need to do? What I have installed is all on the other copy and the things I have are GWX 3.0, SH3 Commander, and that one patch I need for the enigma. Any help?

As far as I know the only way to have more than one working installation of the game on the same PC is to use MultiSH3, which allows you to designate separate folders in My Documents to store the separate career files, savegames, etc., created by each installation.
The last time I remember it being discussed, I think someone mentioned that multiple installations of the game were not possible when using Steam... but I'm not sure as I've never used Steam so I'm not familiar with exactly how it works.
At any rate, if you are not using MultiSH3, more than likely you only have one folder in My Documents (typically called "SH3") for both installations of the game to use. The first installation that you fired up would've created it automatically. The problem is that your other installation is probably also looking at that folder for the info it needs to run, and since files saved to that folder for a GWX installation will not work with the stock game (and vice versa), it is causing problems. :hmmm:
alright thanks for the info, also do you know if I can possibly save my current Silent Hunter 3 campaign when I transfer it over to multish3?

You can try cutting the relevant folder from My Documents and pasting it to a backup location and then returning the files there to the new folder that is created when you start over to see if it works.
However if you have had two different installations of the game, one modded and one not, referencing that one folder and writing/reading files from it, IMO you would be better off to get rid of it entirely and start fresh with different folders for each installation to avoid the risk of corrupted and/or incompatible files botching things up.
That's if you can make multiple installations work with Steam + MultiSH3, which as far as I know, is not an option. To the best of my memory the Steam version of the game only allows for one installation and that's it. I'd ask for input from other Steam users on that issue before starting over with a fresh setup and then finding out that it won't work for you.
na I have a steam version and a non steam version as well, so it works out well. I just uninstalled everything dealing with silent hunter and am reinstalling and downloading on steam now.

Well you probably won't know for sure until you start setting up MultiSH3, so good luck! Usually with multiple installations people install one time and then just copy the game folder to multiple locations, so let us know how it works out.
IIRC you can download MultiSH3.exe from Subsim if you don't have it already.
It is very simple, just an .exe file that you copy into each game installation folder and run once, it will let you specify a unique 3-letter name for the My Documents folder that each installation creates. That way career files and savegames from multiple instances of the game don't get mixed in with each other.
I would think that if it won't work the Steam game installation itself, you can just let that one use the default "SH3" folder name and then put MultiSH3 in the other installation and use it to specify a different folder for that one. :hmmm:
now I need to redownload GWX3, I know there is a link floating around anyone got it?

Not sure which one you found, but the link from the 'official' site has a corrupt file in it. If you don't already have it, best use this one:

ya I got the right one but its not like it matters anyway, my game is apparently corrupt or something off of steam, I uninstalled EVERYTHING to do with silent hunter, yet its still broken. :damn::damn::damn::damn:
Im very close to just quitting, this is total crap.
ok did some more digging in the game, and found out I still have traces or something of GWX because it is seeing the missions GWX puts in. Ok what the crap steam.

You're probably already aware of this, but just in case:
If you wish to run the game in Steam again:
After uninstalling the game, have you gone into your "Steam/steamapps/common" folder, and checked to see if the "Silent Hunter 3" folder was still there? (Even after Steam was supposed to have deleted it.) I find that most of the time Steam doesn't get rid of everything if mods left any junk behind. Afterwards, you can have Steam install the game again, and then install GWX and any other mods. (See the next suggestion before installing mods.)
After installing SH3 on Steam, and before installing any mods, try right-clicking "Silent Hunter III" on the game list, and choosing "Properties". Click the "Local Files" tab, and then click "Verify integrity of game cache". (Just to double-check if it was downloaded properly.
Otherwise:
It's possible that the old installation left some information in the registry, which is pointing to the old install. You can try two different things here.
The first is to install a program like CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER). Uninstall any and all installations of Silent Hunter 3. (Steam, CD, etc...) Using the sidebar in CCLeaner, click Registry, and then "Scan for issues". It will likely come up with some results. Click "Fix selected issues". Choose to backup your registry somewhere if you wish to, or skip this by choosing "no". On the next window click "Fix selected issues". Once that is done, you can get out of that window, and close CCleaner. Try installing Silent Hunter 3 now, and see if things are different.
Failing the step above, you can try uninstalling SH3 again, and manually editing the Windows Registry, searching it for "Silent Hunter" and removing those entires. Be advised that editing the registry can lead to big problems (screwing up Windows) if you're not careful. If it comes to this step, and you are unaware of how to do this, feel free to ask before trying this on your own.
