The F-35B is a lot cheaper than developing say a totaly new AV-14 (14 being the next attack jet number besides 13) design.

The utility of these jumpjets is debatable to begin with, and this one comes at an unprecedented cost.

Im still wondering what they're planning to do about melting flight decks, and how much that'll cost. Maybe they will do whatever Ivan was going to do to accommodate the Yak 141 on his carriers. The Freestyle had more thrust put out during VTOL than the F-35B.
