Altered some of the history of WW2 by sinking a Brooklyn Class Cruiser, then sinking his escort friend, was on the way back to St. Nazarie, after refueling and restocking from U461 we I got a report of a convoy heading east north east, slow. I set up an intercept course, went silent running and snuck right into the middle of the convoy. It was then I noticed the Crusier, and he was going to run into a perfect shot with my stern tube, so alle Maschinen zu stoppen! so then I waited for the right moment, opened the tube door right before hand and then shot. Hit her in the bow and down she went. Then the escort friend got sunk by my magnetic tube. After this I went and destroyed the rest of the convoy. Was a good run.

Well my Patrols are a bit cursed now. I find only small ships, and after i have no eels left, there are convoys full of carriers and battleships. :shifty:

If you have to catch the big fish, you give more energy and not lethargic, get more involved in the game and do not use TC ... so you can bring up the level of the GRT :arrgh!:

If your anywhere near North Africa simply drop anchor 250 km west of Gibraltar and many a convoy will come your way.

You don't have to go where Bdu send you....use a bit of creative initiative and follow your instincts.

I am having a stellar run of luck in early 1940. Every torpedo I fire hits head on (or abeam). Every airplane is missing, then dying to my amazing gunners. I circled around and sunk a destroyer who was depth charging me for HOURS!

43k+ tonnage with 6 forward and 2 aft eels left.

My square is uneventful at the moment and plan on raiding French ports and shipping until I expell all ordinance. I will award extra medals to my gunners (deck and flak) as well to my torpedo officer. (thanks sh3 commander)

I hope I didn't jinx myself with this.:D I aint back at port yet:03:

I usually die horribly after I get happy about good patrols.:har:

You don't have GWX, do you? :D A Destroyer would sink you within a few seconds. But sadly "Alberich" doesn't work the way likeit did in real :(

How well did it work in real life? Are there sufficient reports saying it worked? A great many u-boats were sunk in that period. Did they have it or not?

My point is that there is not enough evidence one way or the other to say for certain how effective it was. Or is there? I don't know, which is why I'm asking.

lol not necessarily, on my last patrol I had about 6 of them DCin me for a whole night until morning, and I didnt take any damage.

Well i am sure you heard about U-480. It was never able to be detected by ASDIC becaus it absorbed the Frequency of the ASDIC, so they didn't were able to detect the submarine with it. There is a Documentation about U-480 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaVaqcm3vBI) also with some facts about it but it is on german without subtitles.
The british navy were able to catch a message of the germans where U-480 wrote "Alberich works!" but they didn't even know what Alberich was to this time. They first though it is some kind which makes the submarine more survival against Depth Charges and just after long time they recognized that it is some kind of stealth technic. U-480 was never found becaus even modern sonars couldn't detect it. It was found after a fishingboat lost its net at the submarine. Before no one knowed where U-480 sunk.

I am talking if you are surfaced and try to destroy the Destroyer with your Deckgun like in the odd movie U-571 :O:

No, I had not heard of it, which was why I asked. It was only tested on two u-boats that I could find, and it did seem to be quite effective. That said, this site says that the echo reduction was only about 15%.
http://www.uboataces.com/sonar-coating.shtml

On the other hand the Wiki article claims it reduced sonar effectiveness from an optimal range of 2000 meters to around 300 meters.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anechoic_tile

And it's used on all modern subs, so it must have some advantages.

I'm only suggesting that it shouldn't make you invisible. Harder to find, sure, but no impossible. As to how the game works, I have no clue, never having been outside 1940.

Well in the video they say, a Destroyer was steaming right above U-480 and was using Asdic but didn't found them. Later in the war they found the frequency of the Alberich. I think since Silent Hunter 3 is a simulation it should also use the advantages, not only the disadvantages. Remember U-480 was found through luck. No one even knowed that a submarine sunk in this region.

Destroyers sailed right above u-boats and didn't find them on many other occasions, and they didn't have it. This article raises the interesting question of how much U-480's escape had to do with the coating and how much was due to the skill (or lack thereof) of the asdic crew.
http://books.google.com/books?id=gDP8T7d-iskC&pg=PA53&lpg=PA53&dq=alberich+coating&source=bl&ots=FuJaznauPD&sig=vXY17vjm_5u6VpBJkDM9TuSRpF8&hl=en&ei=Us6NTvatCce1sQKkwOS3AQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CEQQ6AEwAjgK#v=onepage&q=alberich%20coating&f=false

You say you want realism, but how realistic is it to have alberich at all? How many u-boats were actually treated? How many escapes can be attributed to alberich? In the old statistician's saying, "Once is not a trend".
