View Full Version : My Submarine depth?

I'm getting harassed by a Flower Corvette with an elite crew in my current campaign.
I'm amongst a convoy and I'm trying to sit directly below a freighter so that he can't damage me.

This got me wondering what the displayed Sub depth is actually based on?
Is it the depth at the lowest point of my sub or the highest point of my sub or somewhere in the middle?

Once I know the sub depth I can then use the ship's draft info from ship ID and stick to these ships like a barnacle.

Thanks!

Lowest point. It's the depth of water from the surface to the lowest point.

You will not be able to do that forever, in fact im surprised the ship isnt going faster than you.

Yup, get deep as soon as possible (temporarily at flank), and then keep very quiet, like less than 2 knots and silent running. Sooner or later it will loose you.

The destroyer might not be able to hit you under the freighter, but it will hear you or be able to ping you. You on the other hand have consumables that eventually run out. (oxygen/CO2, battery juice) How long do you want to postpone the inevitable?

P.S. It has already been mentioned, but the depth gauge shows "depth below keel". The keel is the lowest part of the ship along the centerline running front to aft. Pretty much it's backbone.

Well if the Flower is pinging you she knows your exact position. So you will need a lot of luck too. I had some on my back for 8 game hours. And they always found me even with 1kn and silent running and zig zag course. And if you have flooding you will have to do repairs (so no silent running anymore) and he will find you again.

Unless that cargo ship is damaged and only going 2 knots or so, your battery is draining at a considerable rate and it won't be long before you're forced to surface and you die in a blaze of gunfire.

Depth and silence are your tools. I'd go as deep as you can, keep quiet and try to keep bow/stern on to your protaganist whenever possible.

Good luck.

That's because the AI sensors are in 'uber' mode with other factors such as ocean ambient noise reduced to what some would call unrealistically low levels. :-?
