Hi all, i am new here, but I have played Silent Hunter 3 before and it worked perfectly. After a while I un-installed it, and recently tried to put it back on. I came across this graphics problem where the water is either bright blue or black, and everything else has strange pixelation. Can anyone help??

First up, welcome aboard! :sunny:

As for the graphics issue, have you changed any hardware or drivers since the previous install? Also, is the issue SH3 specific or is it affecting other apps as well?

Depending on the answers, I'd probably start by opening up your video control panel and adjusting the anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering settings.

Normally you want the highest state possible, but in a case like this where you're having issues, it's best to turn them down to a maximum of about 4x.

I'd give that a try and see if it makes any difference. Good luck! :sunny:

The only changes to hardware since I un-installed SH3 is I updated was the Nvidia driver. This only happens to Silent Hunter, and I have already tried turning down anti-aliasing.

In that case there's probably two ways to proceed. You could either roll back the driver, (and see if the graphics return to normal), or try disabling any active mods to see if it's a conflict issue. If neither of these are the culprit then you may be looking at a corrupt install.

I haven't even gotten to put mods on, just trying to get it working, so taking off mods won't be an issue, so I'll rollback the driver

First of all, welcome aboard! :salute: The only changes to hardware since I un-installed SH3 is I updated was the Nvidia driver.
A Nvidia card you say? Just if you didn't know, Nvidia cards do have some SH3 related bugs. What type is it (Your Nvidia card)?

Yes welcome aboard, I had this graphic problem, go to your documents open that folder and see If there is a sh3 folder in there, you will want to delete this folder and start game. It's a saved game folder from a preveious install this should solve your problem.

I got the same, but I'm on an old gate way with a ge force fx 5200 at least it works, got some newer machines but they need some work, hope it works out for you, did you install direct x ok go to desktop hit start , hit run type {dxdiag} but some times vista will take you else where let me check I get back with you. DirectX Diagnostic Tool is what your looking for, but still type dxdiag

Found it, all is looking good for DirectX. If it helps, or solves my problem, it's DirectX 11

holy mother of christ, that's bad, I don't think sh3 can run at dx 11

That only happens when I go to the bridge, or anything that shows the water or exterior model

so, any suggestions? If not, I'll try my luck on installing onto a laptop.

Those shots are pretty alarming to say the least. And I think you're right, DX11 is likely too much for the old gal... :nope:

I'm running windows 7 with dx11. As far as I remember I didn't change any settings to make SH3 run lower than that...and I don't have that graphics problem.

Honesty, I'm stumped except to say that it's unexplainable vista glitches like this that are the reason that Vista was blessedly short lived.

To me it almost looks as though one part of the scene is maxing out the video card (probably the water if it only does this externally), forcing the entire scene to de-res to try to keep running. Happens often in FSX when the settings are too high as well. My guess would be either corrupted water or simply the computer just can't handle the water texture.

So far, I'm trying to roll-back Dx 11 to 9.0c, which should help, but what I've found on through google searches, it cannot be done. My question is, would rolling back down to DirectX 10 be enough???

Okay, thanks for the link yubba, I think right now, I will try to install DX 9.0c, see if that helps...

I think I found a fix
This article is for all of you gamers running on Windows Vista operating systems. If you have recently downloaded DirectX 11 problems (http://www.optimize-your-pc.com/regcure/regcure_blog/) and are having incompatibility problems with your older PC games, read this article to learn how to fix these problems and get back to gaming ASAP!
DirectX 11 Incompatibility
Some of the newest PC games require you to download DirectX 11 in order to get the full graphics experience with the game. Unfortunately, older games cannot function properly on DirectX 11 problems. Since DirectX 11 sometimes prevents older versions of DirectX from working on your PC, older games fail to start and you will often receive an error message stating the incompatibility.
Quick, Easy Fix for Computer Incompatibility
The best way to fix this problem is to perform an SFC scan on your PC. This will locate and repair the missing or infected system files that are most likely causing the problem.
To run SFC scan:
• Go to Start
• Select Run
• Type in “sfc /scannow”
• Select OK
• Scan will run and close automatically when through.
• Restart your PC and try running the game again.
Alternative Fixes
If the previous fix does not work, try running the DX web update on the Microsoft website. Reboot and try again. As another alternative fix and to overall improve PC health, download and utilize a good registry cleaner. Cleaning your registry will fix and prevent most PC errors including DirectX 11 problems (http://www.optimize-your-pc.com/regcure/regcure_blog) and optimize your PC’s performance.
