View Full Version : AA and Flat Sun (again!)

I don't know what it is with this sun but it's a pain in the ass! Everytime I install Silent Hunter III and mods, I get the same trouble. And everytime I play about with the nvidia settings and eventually get it working.

I wish there was some hard fast rule on this. I always thought the flat sun was related to gamma correction in nvidia control panel, but now I have nothing turned on, just AAx4 and again I am suffering from flat sun. And applying the relevant mods flat sun fix seems to make no difference. Urrrgh! :damn:

Hi mate.

Do you use Nvidia Inspector or Nhancer to tweak your graphic settings?

Best regards.

I've used nhancer in the past. However, I just installed it to see if it would make a difference to the sun and it won't run now. Or at least, the main window won't open.

I have nvidia Inspector installed already. I take it I can achieve the same thing with this?

Yes mate give me a few and I'll s\shot my settings for sh3. Nhancer no longer works with newer drivers

I've never had the sun with a halo in SH3 with either of my 2 cards 8800GTX and current 9900GTX. Interested to find out if you get it sorted. :sunny:

I always get it sorted... but it always takes an age faffing about.

@Fubar2Niner looks like your settings are stock. No AA or anything enabled in that screenie. I know because changed items appear in black. Also, you have a heap more options than I do right now so I'm gonna check for an updated version nvidia inspector.

Are you drunk at the helm? :haha:

PS. If I'm gonna let nvidia inspector control the video settings, what should I have nvidia control panel set to?

'Let the application decide'?

I set nvidia control panel to 'let the 3D application decide' and nvidia inspector works like this (my settings in nvidia control panel are stock).

The halo is back. :yeah: I set exactly the same option in nvidia inspector as I did in nvidia control panel (4xAA & overide the application setting). So, to conclude it seems it seems the issue is fixed just by applying AA with the 3rd party software rather than nvidias.

I see you have 8xAA set in nvidia inspector! Now, I have to try this... I never had more than 4xAA working before.

Mate, I think your nvidia control panel might still be doing the work. I just set my nvidia inspector same as yours and as expected, the flat sun returned (because AA is above 4). I think you need to go to 'adjust image settings with preview' and then choose 'let the 3D application decide' in order for nvidia inspector to be given free reign. I could be wrong, but it might be worth checking.

I realise your sun is working. What I meant was, I don't think SH3 works with AA above x4. Because you had yours set at 8, it led me to believe that the game is using your nvidia control panel settings, rather than your nvidia inspector settings.

If this is the case, you won't be getting the benefit from the EA Games optimisation.

If we are talking about flat sun issue which belong to OLCG2, then there is an official fix for it, released by mod developer..

Without that fix I would also get flat sun.

Read my original post.

The flat sun fix makes no difference for me. It's all to do with driver settings. At least with my particular hardware.

Maan this is frustrating! Just spent half an hour trying different settings in nvidia inspector and it looks like the choice is this: either I have flat sun or I cannot have AA. THe two do not work together. I've tried settings posted in this thread, but it always comes down to this- enable "ovveride program setting" for AA and sun looses glare, enable "enhance program settings" for AA and glare appears but the game is full of jaggies with shipps masts flickering being pretty severe. :(

Welcome to Subsim! :sunny:

Sorry to say I've been there and felt that. Tried every setting known to man, but as you say, with those cards it seems to come down to one or the other. :nope:

What did you end up preferring- the glare or the AA? :)

I had to go with the AA 'cause I just couldn't handle all the jagged edges. I was getting them mostly on the water around the ships and off in the distance. That made it a pretty easy choice considering I spent a lot more time looking at the water/ships than I did at the sun. :yep:

Hm, I found that disabling sun glare messes up suns representation overall- its reflection in the water (the "sunny road to the horizon") and overall the game just looks better with sunglare on... I chose to stick with sunglare at the expense of AA- will see how it goes.

I will also subscribe to this thread- who knows, a miracle cure might appear, or maybe someone already has it:)

Fortunately there's no right or wrong answer. We all have different priorities, so whichever is least offensive and however you enjoy the game most is fine.

Woot! It works! BOTH sunglare AND AA!! On my Nvidia 460 with latest drivers!

Indeed I should sharpen my comprehension skills as the answer was on the previous page all along.

Step 1: Set Nvidia Control Panel "adjust image settings with preview" option to "let 3d app decide".
Step 2: Set Nvidia Nspector settings. (AA compatibility to 200000000, force AA, AA x4 Multisumpling.

Step 3: enjoy SH3 with AA and proper sun graphics:)

Thanks ryanwigginton, couldn't have done it without you!

Incidentally, in case someone else happens along this thread looking for some help...

This got me thinking so I went back and tested an old rig with a nVidia GeForce 8500 GT. I downloaded an older version of nHancer (2.4.5) and was finally able to get it to work with the following settings:

1. In-game enhanced off (This returns sun halo/glare).

2. Multi-sampling gamma correction on.

3. Multi-sampling AA on and set as high as your system can handle. (Use Ctrl-F8 to check FPS).

4. Pre-render limit 2. (Anti lag).

5. And then perhaps most importantly, AA compatibility set to: '20000000: EA Strategy Games.'

Never thought it would happen, but it worked like a charm! :yep:

Cool!

Of course if you wanted to use recent version of drivers, nHancer is ruled out. I used Nvidia Nspector instead of nHnacer and this trick works with the latest drivers and graphics card. I have my AA set to x4 muslitsumpling and it works great- sunglare, no jagged edges - perfect!

Quite right, but as I was trying to finally sort this on my old rig I didn't want to update the driver. Thanks for reviving the topic and providing the motivation to finally iron this out.

Cheers mate! :Kaleun_Cheers:

Hi mate

Unfortunately the biggest problem with this is, nHancer is basically defunct :wah:

Inspector is the only thing that works with the later nvidia drivers, when I say later, I mean maybe a year or two back. I'm sure I posted about this some time back, but buggered if I can remember under which thread, sorry :damn:

OK............

I'm not sure if I'm one of those blessed in certain departments, but I did look into kaleun ryanwigginton's possible explanation that I was having the halo + no jaggies. That nvida control was controlling my vid settings, I have since ruled out.. ( I think ) As you can see if you have followed this thread my sun is superb (if I do say so myself) Unfortunately my sun pics included bugger all else, so I will upload something including sun and mast cables, in my mind possibly the hardest thing to do without jaggies.

Please bare with me shipmates, I'm sure you know what a bugger PrtScr can be ;)

Best regards.

Does seem a shame, 'twas a handy little program. :yep:

Inspector is the only thing that works with the later nvidia drivers, when I say later, I mean maybe a year or two back.Right, it's just in my (strange :03:) case I've got some old rigs customized for running 'older' games, so the last thing I want to do is update drivers and find some of them don't run anymore. :damn:

Looking forward to seeing the pics and thanks very much for all the helpful information near the beginning of the thread. Nice job mate!
