Yet another "AHHHH IT DOESN'T WORK!" thread.
So, typical "Can not initialize 3D engine" error.
I can run the game if I change my resolution to letterbox format, or play the game in letterbox mode if I set it to windowed.
But has anyone found an actual fix?
I'm sorry but I hope you will understand my reluctance to scour a thread several years old for some concise answers.
Default resolution - 1680x1050
Graphic card - Nvidia 8800 GTX Ultra
RAM - 4 GB DDR3 corsair
Processor - Intel X9650
OS- Windows 7 64 bit

Off the top of my head, is it your monitor frequency? Needs to be 60 (not 59) Hz I think.
I could be wrong! :hmmm:
Another thing may be go to Wherever \ Ubisoft \ Silent Hunter 3 \ Data \ Movies \ Intro and delete the two videos.
It's not hard seaching subsim.com, but not great when doing it with subsim, best way is to use google - enter your seach criteria and put site:subsim.com in there too.

:yep::yep::yep:
Use a game resolution different to the desktop resolution to get the 60 Hz by using a highresfix

I've set it to 60Hz and used the fix.
If I do so, instead of getting the 3D engine error, I get a generic "Application has stopped responding" one.

Run the game at 60 Hz and 1064x768. If this works you can try higher resolutions. I have a rig similar to yours and I cannot run this game at anything except the above.

I forgot, I added the newest DX 9.29 version from June 2010 to my WIN 7 64bit...
