View Full Version : Moon, moonlight, angle in GWX3

For detection purposes, how modeled is moonlight in GWX?

For example, if I am between the target and moon, am I at greater risk than if I am not? Or is risk basically a function of moonlight brightness, and so relative position doesn't matter?

Or is this modeled at all for sun or moon?

I remember reading somewhere (no sorry, I could not possibly be more vague ) that your relative position vis a vis the moon is important in the game, meaning there is more of a chance being spotted passing in front of the moon from the target's viewpoint.

Come to think of it...that may also have come from the real Kriegsmarine Submarine Commander's handbook.

I know that the brightness does have an effect. On a moonlit clear night, you'll be detected further away than on a cloudy or moonless night. Someone else will have to bring more clarity to the "passing in front of the moon" bit of your question, sorry.

My experience yesterday.

Fletcher class DD: I was surfaced at 5 knots, broadside to him, directly between him and a 1/4 moon, at 0235 local time. As soon as I entered his detection circle, he came running.

I should have gone in decks awash. Probably would have been fine.

I will just add that I sense that moonlight brightness matters, but I have no clue if angle does.

My watch crew, for example, seems to detect equally around 360, no matter where the moon is, but a bright moon helps.

GWX modders? Any clues?

Hmm, is it telling that the section on performing a night surfaced attack in the GWX manual makes no reference to the moon at all?
:hmmm:

Perhaps they were too busy beefing up the game so it could kill us better and forgot about the moon? :hmmm:

Yeah, I looked there first. And I have searched the forum, but everything is very vague and anecdotal, and so not reliable.

To the best of my knowledge and belief (wasn't my area during development) it is the brightness and the cross sectional area on view that are the main parameters used by the game in determining detection possibilities.

Thanks Jim. I suspected so.
