Hi,

Been watching the "let's play sh5" (love those youtube videos!) and I am fully enticed by SH again. I can see there are quite a few mods for the sim. No doubt there are many threads on what mods to use and which ones to avoid. Without sounding too whiney I found it a bit of a frustration navigating the downloads section for the best mods. It would be great if some of you vetrans could list say... your ten favourite mods or maybe a list of what you think are critical mods and how heavily you would rate them.

Look forward to peoples recommendations :)

Many Thanks

I tried TheDarkWraith's Magnum Opus and it's a nice comprehensive pack, but the tweaked AI DDs was too difficult for me.

I'm now using Obelix's AVC 2:

Which I really like :)

I added on Critical hits mods for torps and deck gun.

So far it's a lot of fun...

Hi Cold_Gambler,

May I ask what a critical hit mod is? Does it mean that the deck gun and torps can kill with one shot if your lucky enough to get a "critical hit"?

Many Thanks

Check Sober's mod list http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/album.php?u=223410
It also has settings for IRAI (must have) so that there is a small chance you can escape:03:

Hi Rafterman,

I wouldn't say that it turns the torps or shells into one-hit wonders, but it definitely has resulted in not needing to put 3 torpedos into a merchant to be sure it's going to go down.
As I understand it, it also is more realistic with respect to the extent of damage depending on where you place the shells or the torpedo.

I didn't know that IRAI is adjustable... just got sick of being gang-r*ped by hunter-killer groups in 1940.

Obelix's AVC is somewhat more visually appealing (at least to me), but this is very subjective of course.

Hehe, might have been doing the same thing I was.. dropping to 150m, ordering silent running... and then wondering how the hell they were following me everywhere I went. Turns out 'silent running' isn't the only thing you need to do - drop your speed with the 'advanced' controls (where you're given a speed bar) to about half a knot (not the one knot silent running gives you, do this after ordering it).

The idea is to keep your screw rpm below 50. There are rpm gauges in the Engine Room & Conning Tower so you can see when you've achieved it. If you do, you'll be much, much harder to hear. It won't *always* save your bacon, but it's a damn sight more effective than just silent running on its own.

Of course, if you're getting caught in shallow water nothing will save you.. but this might help ;)

Thanks for the tips gents! I really appreciate it :)

When you mention IRAI what does it entail to allow you to escape the clutches of the enemy with more ease?

I've not met anything other than merchants so far as when I got going yesterday the game crashed just as I entered Kiele :( Alas I understand it may be because I set the time compression a little high. I noticed in the lets play there was a mod that tweaked the time compression settings etc not sure what it is called though, any ideas?

Also I copied the anti lag mod to my base install of SH5 and the framerate when through the roof....totally different game now it runs this smooth. My jaw literally dropped :)

You're exactly right, Orpheus... I was crash-diving (even right after launching the torps) and going to silent running @ 1kt around 150 m and wondering how those murderous DDs were still able to dog me...

Speaking of DDs dogging me. I've noticed several times that I'll get a DD "tagging along"- not close to me (more like 8-10km away), and try as I might to get away he'll follow me even hundreds of kilometers on the main map! I can change direction and he'll just adjust, every time I'll stop he'll engage in a circular search pattern 8 km away; if I go north he'll just move the search pattern north by the same increment of my movement... it seems like a bug to me. I've decided to sink him tonight after dragging him all the way up off the north west coast of Ireland...

This is a stock bug and can be fixed by save/load:up:

Yep, that drove me bonkers for quite a while, had a few nasty losses (pro-tip - the area between Ireland and the English coast is a deathtrap, lol)! Another thing to note is that the decoys still work early-war, even without the upgrade added to your sub. Chuck two or three out at periscope depth before diving and they'll home in on both the wrong area and wrong depth. Bit cheeky but it works ;)

Ah, knew it was a bug, didn't realise Save/Load would fix it. Nice one T!

Save and re-load, eh?
You've just saved some Royal Navy men a bath in the cold North Atlantic!

Thanks,
