View Full Version : Waiting for Obama's magic

It is President Obama's big speech on jobs tonight.

Big? Many commentators are convinced there will be nothing new in it.

The markets have discounted it. Congressional Republicans aren't waiting with bated breath. But it is a big deal for those who want to believe in Mr Obama.

I've been to Richmond, Virginia's state capital, to hear from a couple of people about what they expect.

Despite the recession, Jeff Neal's electronics business Commercial One has boomed. His electronics firm rewires homes and companies, and business is booming.

At the depth of the recession, he was down to one employee - himself. Now, he employs eight others and is hiring more.

His slogan is: "building a tradition of excellence one project at a time".

"The economy is not good, obviously, but this environment is going to promote true excellence." But he says certainty about work is important.

"I don't want to hire anybody today that I am going to lay off tomorrow."

He voted for Mr Obama in 2008 and thinks this is an important speech.

"He has had time to receive all the information and is about ready to make some decisions. It's been a long time coming; some say it's overdue. I'm waiting to see what he's got to say."

I fail to see how anyone can expect the president or congress to wave a magic wand and create jobs. Jobs are created by consumer demand. That's it and that's all. Not lower taxes on business, not the broken window fallacy of public works projects. Both sides are retarded at economics and are wasting time and money with these stupid proposals.

Well, According to Romney, it's simple, we just need a job machine to create jobs.

Therefore the speech should be in a tone that generates consumer confidence. Feel good, etc. It worked for his election. I believe infrastructure needs to be addressed and will generate jobs in the construction industry. This in turn generates business for manufacturers of materials required to repair bridges and roads, etc. Fed money is already set aside for road repair for the states. I don't think the government can go much beyond this for job creation. I don't believe this is a fallacy. However, the fallacy lies in the years it will take for study and contract bidding. Let's face it, BRAC started in 2006. Only this year have actual BRAC closing and moving of bases has occurred. The government is just slow in many respects.

But I just read that the President is demanding that the GOP stop standing in the way and let Congress do exactly that. So apparently he expects it.

Basic infrastructure spending is fine and good, and with our crumbling roads and bridges and water systems, probably very sorely needed. But the fallacy of the broken window states that if I break a window, it's good because that means the window repairman is going to get work he wouldn't have gotten otherwise and economic activity has been created. It's a fallacy because the money used to pay the window repairman is being diverted from other more productive uses by the window owner, so nothing has truly been created. Spending taxpayer money to create public works projects for the sake of creating jobs and nothing else is a bad idea, and one that the Democrats seem to cling to.

No one is creating public works projects. The problem of crumbling roads and bridges created themselves! There is no fallacy here. No one broke a window. The window is crumbling away on it's own. It can't go on being ignored. I think Obama is smart here in addressing the issues of infrastructure that is a problem in all states. In addressing the problem jobs will be created. In short, the tax payer flips the bill for infrastructure anyway. Roads and bridges are not getting repaired by themselves. These problems need to be addressed. Instead of blowing billions in other countries it is time to funnel the money into the US infrastructure. I'm all for this if Obama is looking to repair infrastructure.

I'm sure Obama will offer a nice speech that paints a Rosey picture.
Then Congress will ignore it all and carry on as normal.
:nope:
Nothing will happen and we all go on as usual.

Even IF some kind of massive Construction thing is started?
Only the big Companies stand a chance of getting the contracts.
The Little Guys will be cut down faster then they are being cut down now.

So where's the Meat?
You have to have a big wallet now to know the answer.

How many times did he say pass this bill, right away ????????? I remeber their last bill, oh we have too pass it to see what's in it. Just more government spending, what they didn't spend enough in the stimulus last year.??? Nothing about, lowering corperate taxes, easing on regulations or energy independence. The best he could muster was, tax the rich and big corperations they have too pay their fare share.:har::har: Warren Buffet pays lower percentage than his, wait a minute he owes millions in back taxes. :haha::haha::haha: Mumble Jumble, sat an listen to this via the Mark Levin Radio Show, Obama just grasping for straws for relection, thinking government is going to create more jobs. Oh by the way it was, 18 times right away, was said. Thought I was listening to a Sham Wow commerical, get it right away and you can get this slap chop too...445 billion more for union thugs, to be turned into campaign contributions.

Wish they would just admit the truth, both parties served special interest, sold out, overspent and put bandaids on every possible crisis over the last 20 years. They screwed us good and just need to admit a large majority of americans will suffer terribly for years to come and nothing can be done about it.

Mr Obama said an "American Jobs Act" would create new jobs for construction workers, teachers and the long-term unemployed

US President Barack Obama has unveiled a $450bn (£282bn) package of tax cuts and spending plans aimed at creating jobs and bolstering the economy.

He wants to fund huge construction projects, schools and services, while giving tax cuts to workers and small businesses to boost recruitment.

Mr Obama told a joint session of Congress that politicians needed to act quickly to pass the package.

Republican congressman John Boehner said the plans "merit consideration".

"We hope he gives serious consideration to our ideas as well," said Mr Boehner, the speaker of the House of Representatives.

The Republicans control the House, and have derailed many of Mr Obama's legislative proposals. Mr Boehner's support is likely to be crucial if the measures are to be approved.

Some of Mr Obama's opponents have already dismissed the jobs plan as a crude attempt to boost his flagging popularity in the run-up to next year's presidential election.

Some 9.1% of Americans are currently out of work, and the issue is expected to dominate the election campaign.
