Police in Berlin have arrested two men suspected of planning a bomb attack.

One of the men is described as a 24-year-old German citizen of Lebanese descent, while the other is from Gaza, aged 28.

They had procured chemical substances which could be used to make explosives, a police spokesman said.

Police are searching the premises of an Islamic cultural centre in the Wedding district, as well as the two men's residences.

The two suspects occasionally stayed overnight in the cultural centre and were frequent visitors to the mosque associated with it, police said.

However, they specifically said the mosque itself was not being searched.

The arrests come just a few days ahead of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, and two weeks before Pope Benedict XVI is due to visit Berlin.

Police have not commented on whether they believe the men were targeting a specific event.

A Libanese, a Palestinian, and an Islamic culture centre. Why couldn't it be a Spaniard, a Korean and a Buddhist meditation room for a change?

Blessed is the well-meaning kind heart.

I used to stay in Berlin - Wedding for about a year for business reasons.

It is a dangerous place to be, because of crime.

Those explosives could be made because of terrorism, of course. At this time of the year, everything will be suspected as dealing with the September, 11th.

From my experiences in Wedding (not sooo long ago), I can imagine some other reasons as well:

- For or against the Hells Angels
- For or against the Bandidos
- For or against the Turks
- For or against the Moroccans

to name only a few.

Wedding so bad that even the Police avoid to get to some places there. Every street is in the hands of one of the above and there is all kinds of organised crime there.

We should not forget about this context.

Sources? Just goggle "Bandidos and Berlin" or one of the other plus "organised crime"

Edit: I had my experiences with some of them...

Or it's the Russian Mafia. Mostly, these day, it's them they blame. Even as convenient as blaming Islam for all eeeevil in the world. :O:

Of course, Berlin is a city that is high, but most people are not aware of the potential risks that may come and the case in all cities in the world, not just Berlin that is alleged in this article, arrests are made by people with the involvement of external links that are considered equally in the context of a threat to society and its security, without even names in newspapers, but because it is nearly 10 years after the 9 / 11, so this could easily be the subject of a title in the newspaper,Of course you should take seriously in this.

Berlin is a garbage bin: dirty, noisy, and unfriendly in tone and behaviour, very incompetent in administration structures, and political government. I know Berlin since the early 80s, I lived there for ten years. It was okay in the 80s, but since the wall came down, it socially and culturally constantly declined in free fall. German middle class moved out, low class foreigners moved in, tax income fell, tax evasion into the surrounding areas of Berlin, plus a huge financial scandal that left the city'S finances in smoking ruins. It also is a deeply anti-social city, for my taste, and it lives on the financial drip of other federal states.

Which all together does not make Berlin a bit more silent. Instead it has thge biggest mouth of all federal states, and has perfectly made itself a nest in being nursed by others, and wasting more money on very questionable things than it can afford.

Since a few years, Berlin has become a black spot on my map. With my last friends in Berlin having fleed the city last year, and my parents having moved out many years ago, I have no more reason to ever see that pit again. When I think of berlin, I think of the Berlin of the past, and that was fine. The present Berlin - is simply ugly, dirty, foreign, and bad. And it will not become better. I will never understand why tourists consider it to be a tourist must-see.

If they were striking in the context of a rocker war, they hardly would meet within a mosque for their conspiratory meeting.

Scale of the planned attack seems to rule out gang war and organised crime as well.

Police explicitly now (according to a recent report in Die Welt) mentions an Islamic background as motivation.
