View Full Version : London Refuses Kids Tickets to Gun-Related Olympic Events

Schoolchildren in London are eligible for 125,000 free tickets for the 2012 Olympics next sumer, but any event that involves a firearm will be excluded from the massive giveaway.
Why, you ask, would anyone choose to hide storied events and world class competitors from children’s eyes?
Because City Hall and Olympic Organizers are afraid of an anti-gun backlash. That’s right — the powers that be in London won’t subject kids to such bloodsports as Skeet and Trap shooting. The London Evening Standard (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23980400-children-banned-from-shooting-events-in-2012-ticket-giveaway.do) reported yesterday on the “Ticketshare” (http://getset.london2012.com/en/join-us/why-join-the-get-set-network/tickets-to-the-Games) decision, and the window it has given into current British views on guns in society.
In supporting the decision to discriminate against Olympic gun events, Danny Bryan, founder of Communities Against Gun and Knife Crime (http://www.cagk.co.uk/), told the Evening standard he agrees with London Mayor Boris Johnson, and that “It is good kids should enjoy the Games but there’s no way we should glorify guns.” Implicit in this anti-gun activist’s statement is the highly dubious connection between watching Olympic level marksmanship and crime.

Will they be excluding tickets for Olympic Archery too? After all, that's a ranged weapon that killed for centuries before guns came along. How about Boxing? Too violent for the kiddies I'm sure.
Nothing new I guess. The Olympics have always been subject to this sort of PC weirdness. I'm surprised Curling isn't banned for shoving around stones.

So they can't see any track and field events? :hmmm:
Those use a starter pistol! :haha:
Another stance of intellectual tripping.....poor kids.

Track and field also features javelin throwing. We can't let children see former implements of war no matter how primitive. By the same token combat sports such as fencing, judo and wrestling must go too.
In the distant future, the Olympics will feature only competitive whining, bed wetting and hand wringing. :D

You can add Hammer and Discus throwing to that list as well, maybe they will allowed to attend the swimming and diving events :hmmm:

*Sarcasm on*
So they can only watch events that the French will win, is that it?
*Sarcasm off*
No offense to my French Friends, just had to do that in humor.
What about dart throwing?

Right because Swimming and Diving are not involved in warfare...

EDIT: The Modern Olympics were meant to be a replacement for warfare at the national level. It makes sense that its events would be combat related.

So schools can apply for the very limited number of free tickets for shooting events in this scheme then and can give them to the poor little children so they can watch those shooting events:yawn:
gah...
I believe is is already the case that the GB olympic target pistol shooting team are not allowed to train in the uk because of the ban on handguns.
Well, I for one will be making more certain moves to enjoy the sport of shooting (funds permitting) using one of those evil shot guns that roid-rage ex bouncer body builders shoot their ex girlfriends and policemen with... lets see now:
ex girlfriend - check
steroids - not yet
body building bouncer physique - not my bag, oh well, make the best of what you've got, however, maybe the 'roids will help with that?
illegal shotgun - any council estate pub should see me right
find a policeman - plenty of them about
So!, just about all set for a massacre :yeah:
oh, wait.... I'm not a crazy nutter with a death wish, damn.
Back to square one.
Yes, lets bundle children away from anything that might be the cause of sensationalist reporting in the media; our politicians seem to be set on this protection to such an extent, that guns are sooooooo bad and wrong for society and the cause of a corrupting evil that will destroy us all.
Never mind about the widening poverty gap, disaffection of the young and old alike and the ever greater 'haves' having more of everything at the expense of the rest of us. That's no threat to our society at all, pay it no mind, good sirs, 'tis just a passing fad, lie frock coats and dandies about town.

You believe wrong.
They are allowed to train in the UK and handguns are not banned.

Jumpy, did you miss the fact that schoolkids can get tickets for shooting events under the free scheme and can go and watch those events with their school?
can't tell if trolling...

Book youself a place in Bisley, you might avail of the try before you buy pistol shooting and may even get instruction from your current commonwealth pistol champion at the shooting range.
But seriously leaving aside that its the Standard, when you look at an article and the second comment is along the lines of ...."sloppy reporting this story is just drivel" do you not wonder if the story is true or not?
I'm surprised that no-one has posted an EDL related news article yet, seems the sort of thing that the usual vendors pick up on. :hmmm:

EDL are well catered for, most of the free tickets under the scheme are for soccer matches.
It has led to some problems amonst the brainboxes at the EDL as those football hooligans are confused when it comes to minor details, if for example they had tickets to a match between bulgaria and bolivia which team would be the most foreign?
