Hey, I recently bought SH3 on steam and I've been enjoying it so far. I've started my first career in the 1st flotilla at 1939 with the milk cows mod and I've sunk a few merchant ships over 2 or 3 patrols. I was wondering whether I should carry on playing (slightly modified) vanilla for a while or start using a super mod such as grey wolves soon, since I'll be able to appreciate the change better if I've played vanilla for a while.

Also, is there a mod that makes crew fatigue less effectual/easier to manage? Reaching my patrol area and already having most of my crew tired is getting annoying, as is messing around micromanaging it.

Thanks, Cheese.

Hey Cheese :salute:

Yep, go for a supermod, hell - multi-install and go for them all, vast improvement over vanilla. If you go the GWX route and want the contact colours returned you'll need to dig out the mod for that (from Jim I think).

Get SH3 Commander - it sits external to SH3 but you can select a 'no fatigue' option amongst many others - it really is a must for any SH3 install. Available here - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=2923

It's not cheating as IRL the boss didn't micro-manage all his crew. :D

SH3 Commander has several different optional fatigue models that it can write into the game for you, including "no fatigue" which removes it completely. :yep:

Regarding your other question, it's really up to you, some people will tell you to learn the basics in the stock game first and then decide on a supermod. Other people will tell you not to bother with stock and to get a supermod right away. It just depends on what you want to do.

Keep in mind though that you will have to start over with a clean installation of the game before installing a supermod on top of it, so if you want to play out your current career you'll have to stick with stock until you're done with it.

I like the Fatigue system ;) But it would have been better if you could make that the crew changes automaticly in some time. :hmmm: Some are sleeping and some are on the watch or on their stations. Like in a real submarine. :DL

A good mod combo is GWX and the excellent OLC "Gold".

SH4 does exactly that. :sunny:

Thanks for all the welcomes :DL.

Also, a couple questions; will steam/gas powered torps like the G7a's trail alert the target to my sub's presence or the torpedo heading towards it? If so, will it cause them to change course?

If I hit esc, click exit patrol and then return to base rather than sailing back and docking at port, will I gain less renown?

They do. If it is a destroyer or an other military ship, it will hunt you down. If it is a merchant ship it will start with zig zag courses making it a hard target.

And yes, if you don't return to your Base you gain less renown.

1) Merchant ships almost never see the gas trail. When I say "almost never" I mean once or twice in my past two years of playing. And one of them might have seen my scope.

2) In the case of merchant ships, their spotting you will cause them to begin a slow serpentine path along their original course. It is a perfectly predictable thing, and they are actually not much harder to hit.

3) Navy ships are far more on the ball (as you would imagine) and they may well react. It will depend on how long they have a chance to spot the trail, and the experience level of its crew. In the stock version, they can almost stop on a dime. In GWX, the physics are far more realistic, so that, even if they see you, there is only so much they can do if you are at close range.

4) Naval vessels react in one of two ways. Capital ships and any naval ships inside a convoy will react like merchats: Serpentine path, but same course. Escorts will turn and try to attack you.

5) The renown for returning to base was never coded into the game or into GWX, so you won't lose anything by hitting Esc. However, most "realistic" players make the journey home. I head home when I have 3 torps left, and I often bag 10-15K on the return trip.

I'm trying to learn/practice manually targeting and hitting targets with torps at the moment, so I tend to run out quite quickly, return to base means I don't have to endure the boring sail back to restock after the frustration of missing a target I managed to immobilise (with a torp) 5 times :P.

Will I only get contact reports if I'm close enough to the contact? I just got my first one west of Scotland 4 months into the war, a slow convoy.

Your SH3 map should be updated quite regularly through messages and reports.

I mean convoy reports. I get single contacts, but I've only had one convoy report so far. Then again, I'd imagine they're rarer at the beginning of the war.

Things should pick up soon....you could try the SpySat mod to give you an idea of what's to come.
