View Full Version : Crash To Desktop - fresh install

...at some point after years of playing (incl. old GWX mods) it started to crash.

checked threads in this forum, savegame crash doesnt apply - crash after choosing any mission (doesnt have to be a savegame) is what i experienced.

what it did so far (between each step is another unsuccsessful try to run the game at all):

a) followed advise from a different thread of this forum as far it could.
(removing read only, indexing recursive file attributes, removing mods ...)

b) rebooted

c) deinstalled / reinstalled (purchased via steam, so i did this via steam too)
also i removed all old savegames, in fact i renamed the folders, and had the install routine create new blank vanilla ones.

... i reach the end of my latin. If not even a complete re-installation
with no mods does the trick, what will?

"the click here" in the crash popup identifies sh3.exe app vers 1.4.0.1 at offset 000b9912 in the 'problemsignature' as microsoft calls it.

Ideas/Inspirations? Or have i been sunk forever...:06:

I often have CTD at Hex b9912 when I try to load missions that contain objects (ships) that are not installed properly.

E.g. I have a test-mission containing a certain submarie type. If I now forget to also install that submarine type , I get an CTD at Hex b9912.

I had the same problem thousands of times. I tried to change the attributes of folder SH3\cfg\Carrers unckeking the read only, but in Windows 7 you remode it and it stays there.
Changed SH3 properties: compatibility to XP service pack2 as "run as administrator". Worked once!
Then I cleaned everything. A new reinstall and now, for 2 days, I'm not having any problem.
Good luck
Antonio

thanks folks.

My game machine runs an old fashioned XP - so i have no
compatibility issues in that sense. Age of machine matches age of game:)

I would be surprised if some ships are missing in a fresh unmodded install of sh3... i tried many things. different missions, ad hoc training stuff .. creating a new career and starting over...-> crash.

I have looked into sh5 , but i hate it... i miss my old sh3 :(

Clean the registry files using the free trial version of regvac:

http://www.regvac.com/fregvac.htmRegistry entries don't affect the game at all.
But if you encounter difficulties when reinstalling SH3 this is very helpful:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=183154

It solely removes SH3 related stuff...

Well, i managed to clean my system.. also clean the registry, but that tool that finds so much - does find so much, because it also wants to kill useful and necessary entries, folks - if you dont know what youre doing, dont use that.

Anyways, i managed to reinstall, and GWXd it as well.

Now my problem is, that savegames of years of playing the campaign
are gone ..

..well i have backed them up somewhere, but i kind of dont dare
to copy them in place, because i have reason to believe something is foul about them and caused the mess in the first place.

I found that out by running a test on my laptop, there is not enough diskspace to really play the game with GWX, but the vanilla install works - so i copied the savegames there (1942, gibraltar) ... and the game crashed no matter wich of the savegames i tried to load :(

I resort to play single missions, until i managed to figure our how to fix the
my saved career. Is there a post somewhere that describes which files actually are the ones needed to save the career?

I also tried reducing the number of saves, deleted the first 2 yrs of saves
but that didnt keep the game from crashing on loading one of the more recent saves.

can you post the error message, is it stackhash crash or a sh3.exe crash?

uh oh.. i havent payed attantion this time.

my guess is sh3.exe crash - but, i will doublecheck and post the result here
as soon i find the time to do it. (on a sidenote, this weekend i am doing a historic longsword fighting seminar... as a result my left eye tears and my right thumb doesnt funtion properly, also my back hurts from lifting the steel all day.. but ill go back tomorrow for more) ..which is the reason why
my test results come a bit later.

Now my problem is, that savegames of years of playing the campaign
are gone ..Unless your present install is exactly like the one used to save those games, (same mods installed in the exact same order), it will crash. Even if they are exactly alike, it is a tossup whether they will load or not. SH3 is really picky when it comes to saved games. That is why it is best to just start over with a new career when you reinstall.

Skippers.

I can report, that i managed to get my career progress back.

Using your input, and my own magnicifent intelligence ... i am now
back on sea disrupting allied supply lines.

this is the summary in a nutshell

- clean reinstall (means to remove all traces ... or "rename folders")
- GWX 3 reinstall (i had no other mods)
- rename new data/cfg folder to "sh3_new" and rename "sh3_old" back to "sh3"
(own documents, save games & career, not the installation directory)
- deletion of years of save games, reducing it to only the few latest

----- testing begins:

- start the game - with a radnom ad hock gwx mission... sucsess!
- start the game - with not the latest savegame (which i believe is guilty)
but the previous one... sucsess!

back in business.

thanks to all of you who responded to my SOS i am en route to brest
making rotations for 17 knots...

:yeah:

Well done but I'd still be deleting the original folders and performing a registry clean.

DRKF
08-30-11, 02:42 AM
...i have done that, as stated a few posts earlier,
but since it evidently that had no influence
on the succsess of the repair i left it out of the summary list.

renaming a folder is technically equal to deleting it from point of view of a installer. But beyond that, i had erased the main installation folder
and just kept&renamed the save game part - in case that
wasnt clear yet from my previous post.

registry clean is always a good idea, but only if you know what youre cleaning.

Btw, I am a IT consultant (usually working on big installations,
unix heavy, Storage clusters etc and _not desktops_ therefore i would always listen to you guys whom may have 1st hand experience)

but due to my work experience i learned to be somewhat
selective enough when cleaning the registry.

An advise to someone on a lower proficiency level
to "clean the registry" without further and precise instructions as of hat keys exactly would need to be removed, is something i view a bit sceptical sometims. Please dont take that personal. My mind permanently question all things. Politics, Business, Integrated Circuits ... you name it.
Maybe thats the german in me :-)

All is good though.
