Recent news reports indicate a HUGE storm called Irene is heading for the east coast of the US.Winds are expected to reach in excess of 120mph and shipping has been advised to vacate the immediate area.
This looks a truly terrifying storm, even the 'eye' could be seen from space :o

Currently I have 28 trailers of generators/relief supplies coming from Atlanta GA. This is one of FEMA's distribution center. These trailers will be spotted at Fort Bragg NC. I have two IMAT trucks coming from CA. These trucks are for search and rescue. These are my only tasks for now. There are others but these went to different transportation outfits.

Tracking the storm since Sunday the predicted landfall has changed quite a bit. First predictions was landfall in Jacksonville FL. Then it moved to Charleston SC. The following day Wilmington NC. Then yesterday it showed landfall straight up the Chesapeake Bay. Now it shows landfall way up in the New England area. The jet stream is slowly pushing the storm back out to sea(eastward). This is favorable and a better outcome.

Right now it is gulping the Bahamas. It looks to me the eye of the storm will be offshore right up the coast. The heaviest winds will stay on the east side of the eye. However, a lot of water is being pushed in front of the storm. The surge will affect the coastline to some extent. The Chesapeake Bay will probably have issues with the surge being pushed up a ever closing bay as it proceeds northward. This has happened before with hurricane Isabel that came up the mouth of the Chesapeake. I suspect a lot of rainfall along the coast. I believe the storm is 800 miles in diameter.

Not true! The coastal towns have evacuation plans and routes. These are used effectively. However, some people do not leave and often get into trouble or die. Most just need to get inland 10 or so miles. Much safer then sitting on the beach! This is no fault of FEMA's that some folks do not evacuate. And, FEMA is not the first responders. Local government is. Once the state is declared a disaster area by the President is FEMA activated to assist. The theory is way off the mark. :03: The depopulation is at the hands of those that do not heed the warnings to evacuate.

Yeah, it's little comfort for the Bahamas and the other places already whalloped but at least the East Coast should hopefully escape the worst of it, might get some hefty wave action though and some high winds but nothing like it would be if she made landfall as a Cat 4 or 5.
Then of course in a week or so the UK gets high winds and rain.

I was referring to the map of the storm's projected path, where its route covers the entire BosWash area.
This would be impossible to manage in this short period, however I don't doubt there are plans even for NYC for worst-case scenarios.
I didn't know that traveling inland for such a short time can already bring you into a safe area, as I have no Hurricane experience. I thought the safest would be staying in a secure building rather than traveling.
And my respect to your commitment, AVG! I hope it came out clear that I also don't believe that the FEMA is evil - well, at least not more evil than other agencies ;)

Typically the storms looses energy once it hits land. Going inland gets one away from storm surge and higher winds. It is much safer. I have been through two hurricanes. I have been in the eye of one. Everything stops. No wind or rain. It is wild. Then the back half of the eye passes and it starts all over again.

Contrail Persistance and growth
Many chemtrail theorists claim that contrails do not spread out, but
chemtrails do. This is very untrue and shows a lack of knowledge of how
the upper atmosphere works. If the atmosphere is moist enough to hold a
contrail for an extended length, chances are that it will spread out to cover
sky, forming a layer of cloud known as cirrostratus. If the atmosphere is
dry, then the contrail will fail to persist and growth will not occur or will be
limited. It should be mentioned that weather balloons are used to retrieve
data in the atmosphere, then that information is used against the
Appleman chart for forecasting purposes.

Yes, no wind in the eye. It is as if the a storm has just passed and wind/rain have stopped. It is quiet. Sometimes one can see the sun while in the eye!
Often the disorganized is the cause for too much cash expenditures. FEMA does not move until funding is approved on Capital Hill. This year FEMA was short on cash for forthcoming storms. Money was redirected from defense. Bur yes, it is all about dollars in the end.

"Eerie" doesn't do do it justice. It's creepy. If you're "fortunate" enough to have the eye pass directly over you, you're standing in bright sunshine, the sky a sparkling blue over you head. Unfortunately, you're completely surrounded by towering dark grey walls of boiling, evil looking clouds shot through with rainbows. Okay, maybe "eerie" is a better description. :hmmm:
You really don't have a lot of time to appreciate the view, though, because Part 2 is bearing down on you ridiculously fast, and that's when the real fun starts. All morning you've been getting slammed by winds from the east (counterclockwise rotation). After the eye the winds come out of the west. So anything that was protected during Part 1 gets slammed in Part 2.
My wife and children have decided that we're still going to the Outer Banks, hurricane or no (we paid a lot of coin to rent the house). Probably Monday. I just hope the thing is still standing.

There is mandatory evacuation of the outer banks. You will not be able to go on the spit of land. Also, the projections put Irene right on top of the outer banks. No amount of money is worth the risk.
As for me, the storm will affect the Chesapeake Bay. My house is between Marley Creek and Furnace Creek on a peninsula. The creeks are part of the bay. Hurricane Isabel flooded homes one block from my home. I'm talking by 2-3 feet of water as the mass of water pushed up the bay. I will be checking my sump pump and battery back up tonight. I will probably purchase a new deep cycle marine battery. If my electricity is off for whatever reason the marine battery should cycle for 20 hours keeping the sump basin from flooding my basement. If the juice is not restored in that 20 hours my basement gets flooded. :(

The last time the region of Florida I live in got hit was in 2004 and we got two that year luckily they where both cat 2 by then but they both took down tons of trees and power lines blew off parts of roofs or tress feel on roofs. The worst part was all the trees that had fallen across roadways.I live down a long private dirt and gravel road the only option was for everyone who lived on the road was to grab chain saws axes we also had a few tractors to pull limbs we checked to be sure that no power lines where in any downed trees and they weren't.
One of the odd things was on the second day in the morning there was a noticeable gust of wind for about 30 seconds it actually blew doors open inside the house. In a wooded area across from my house this wind had blown down flat every tree for a 200 foot radius as if a bomb had air bursted so it must have been a very strong wind.
The power was out for over a week after each storm so many people learned to buy a generator after 2004.I am very glad that I was not in south Florida during Andrew back in 92 or 93 was it. I know people that went though that one and it was pretty bad.
Id stay away form that vacation rental if I was flatsixes hurricanes are no joke that close to the sea in particular one storm surge will wash that house away and you with it that is not worth your life course if they have done an evac of that area you will not be able to get out there anyway.Mother nature does not care if you spent alot of money on something.

It's a safe bet the Outer Banks will not be accessible on Monday. The surge not only takes down homes and trees it carries debris such as sand, seaweed and boats! This being said clean up usually requires bulldozers, wreckers and landfill dumpsters. When Galveston was hit no one was permitted to go on the outer beach front for weeks. Also, the water system sometimes get polluted with everything under the sun.

It is true that the media does hype up things over hurricanes (well over anything really) but still they are pretty destructive at least along coastal areas even weak Cat 1 ones can do lots of damage.Really nasty cat 4 or 5 canes only hit an area every 30 or 40 years and people tend to forget.
Katrina was so bad because it went across South Florida and weakened then it got into the hotter Gulf of Mexico and got much stronger and many residents of LA,Miss, and Al did not take the threat seriously partly to be blamed on the hype news and also to blame on the whole "cry wolf syndrome" after several years of warnings people tend to get lax.I think the last time the Gulf Coast had a really nasty storm pre 2005 was back in the mid 60's Katrina took out the I-10 bridges near Pensacola and that was on the weaker end same for New Orleans they did not get the strongest bit either and look what happened. The last really bad one to hit FL was Andrew almost 20 years ago now same for NC and SC the last really bad one was in the late 80s.
I always feel better safe than sorry with a hurricane you dont have to go into panic mode though.

Very true if the last few years of storms have taught us anything it should be that we really should not develop some of these low lying areas very much as they naturally absorb the oceans wrath so will what you build there not mention that we take away the blocking effect that barrier lands create and then that means more trouble for areas inland water level wise.

Well Florida got hit by two Cat 2 hurricanes back in 2004 and they both took out power line and poles and I mean alot some rural areas where out of power for 2 weeks. You have to remember that that cat is average it does not mean that certain areas wont get much higher speed winds. The other factors to consider is that even if not 100 mph and only say 60mph that is 60mph winds for hours constantly combine that with the weight that trees gain from all the rain water and sooner or later they will topple over onto a house or power line.In FL back in 2004 most trees feel from the weight of all that rain water the root system got overloaded and they could no longer take the wind speeds.
Don't under estimate what even a cat 1 or 2 hurricane can do because they will show you by knocking out your power for 4 or 5 days.Maybe not much major damage but lack of power for days on end is pretty lame. Also many power companies do a very poor job of keeping their lines clear which can prevent power loss.
I would just hope that it passes over ever cooler water as colder water weakens and pray or slay chickens or goats that it does not pass over any warm currents and gets a sudden boost in power if things go well they will fizzle if they go badly a hurricane will get even stronger than before it weakened.

I had just checked it, then I turned and looked out my back deck slider just in time to see a 50ft maple topple over into the woods (not against the house thank God!). It was a pretty hairy morning but by afternoon we were venturing out on the deck though the gusts were strong enough to keep us scurrying whenever a big one came over. Aside from the maple our damage is confined to broken branches a yard filled with debris. Just got our power back about an hour ago.
Lessons learned:
1. Having your own well is a great thing but if you loose power you soon loose water pressure. On my system a couple toilet flushes will pretty much do it.
2. Stocking up on food before an emergency is a good idea but it should be non perishable. Freezers full of food thaw quickly.
3. An AC power generator would solve both of these problems as well as the electric stove and hot water heater.

Is it still too early to panic? :D
Yes. Hurricane Jose make a similar start but made a hard right turn North. Could happen with TD #12. But, it is worth keeping an eye on. TD #12 is a large depression all ready.

We had very strong winds. Our electricity stayed on. Many lost theirs. I'm investing in a generator....when I can find one! :DL

Most of the places my friends live are without power.
And a couple friends were stadning on the beaches on the CT shoreline when it hit.
nobody I know is hurt though. We'll make it...
as long as you don't go to the Burger King in Old Saybrook, my god, that place was like the Superdome after Katrina, I was eating Double Whoppers like all the other "refugees"

A few shrubs and a camo net, nobody should notice....just tell them it's an emergency toilet in the event your water connection is disabled :DL

I'd bet more than that!
I think i'm going to go for something in the 10-15KW range. Propane powered.

My basement apartment was ankle deep in water. It was like being at the bottom of the Gibralter Strait. Me and my roomies bailing water and scrambling to get our valuable up and away from the floor. I even slept curled up on my bed with my computer and other stuff piled around me. I can't complain though, the rent is super cheap for Brooklyn. Gonna be a few days getting the smell out though. :x

Depends on how much work is put into the input!:hmmm:

Been there brother. We had about 1 inch of water in our basement back in 2003. Within 12 hours the stench from the carpet glue, etc was nasty. My wife and I ripped it up pronto. The rug was thrown outside and basement allowed to dry.
I wonder if one of those gennies could be sent to Task Force, I think the power cut monster ate him.

So I'm on Vacation in Atlantic Beach, NC. Irene came ashore just a few miles from here. The fishing pier is half gone, and there's a church down the street with it's steeple at a 45' angle. And a lot of signs for stores are missing. Other than than, not much damage here. Nothing like what I saw in Biloxi when I was down there helping rebuild post-katrina. I'll get some pictures up eventually for you guys to see.
Sat in the hot tub tonight with a couple on their honeymoon. They had gotten married during the peak of the storm, in her sisters house, with no power. They had a huge church and reception planned, but few people could travel, and all the important guests were already at the house, so they went through with it. Pretty cool IMO. Kudos to them.
