We did on Tangier about 15 minutes ago. First thought which went through my mind was - liquefaction
I didn't, but other people in my town reported it. Funny, I'm supposed to be in that part of VA tomorrow :dead:
There was also one about the same scale in Colorado last night, reportedly the biggest they had in a century. So this one's probably related.

That's a bigun for this area, too. Shook us like crazy up here in Westminster.
Wasn't just VA by the way. At least if my facebook feed is any indication, it's been felt by people from North Carolina to Boston to Toronto here.

I didn't, but other people in my town reported it.
A long time ago there was an earthquake here in Salt Lake that made the people where I worked abandon the building. Later when I picked my wife up from her mother's they said they hadn't felt it at all, but they saw it reported on the news...from a cable station in Denver, 600 miles away!
I had the opposite last year though. We had one about that same size hit last june, and I felt it but other people wouldn't believe me till they got it on the news (although I initially didn't know what it was, just that my body immediately went into high alert mode, like something was wrong but I didn't know it). My parents were right under the epicenter of that one, they said there was extremely loud rumbling all through the area.
Hope everything's okay with this one! A couple of my good friends in the DC area, including ones that I'm visiting tomorrow and for the rest of the weekend, have just been evacuated from work... no word from them since, but I'm gonna hope it's all just proper precaution.
News radio here in Los Angeles reported the National Quake Center rated it at 5.8 on the Richter Scale; hell, that's barely more than a door slam in california... :DL

Funny, I've done that too. Way back in my teenage years I suffered a couple of fainting spells. One day in my bedroom I thought I was getting lightheaded again, until I turned around and noticed the curtains swaying.
Many years later I was visiting my dad, and was awakened in the night by...something. Then I heard the fish tank sloshing, until I remembered there was no fish tank. I went to the back yard to see water sloshing back and forth in the swimming pool. I never felt the quake, but I saw its results.

Liveing in So. Calif, I'm kinda numb to ones in the 3.0 to 5.0+
There usually Aftershocks months after the 6.0 plusers
It's to the point the news doesn't report unless it's significant.
To those that aren't used to it it, can be quite a shock. No pun intended.
Be prepared for the Aftershocks. Some can be bigger that the initial Quake. :yep:

It completely rocked my office in Hanover MD. I looked at my coworker when it just started. The floor under my chair was pulsating. I said to him, "This is a earthquake." He did not believe it. Then the entire building was rocking. The damn walls were swaying. We make a beeline to the door. As soon as we got to the door to the outside it stopped. Absolutely wild and a bit scary.

Looks like a lot of East Coasters are going to have lively dinner conversations tonight.
Careful with those sodas and beers, though.:D
When the Nortridge Quake hit in 1994 (6.7 manitude), I was working in an office and one of our interns was from Wisconsin and had never felt an earthquake before. However, she managed to sleep right through it and came in to the office highly disappointed to have missed the quake. BTW, each full level on the Richter scale is 10 times the strength of the previous leve, e.g, a 3.0 is ten time stronger than a 2.0, etc. So you people back east may think you felt a big one, but the Northridge Quake was roughly 10 time bigger than today's quake.
Incidentaly, it was nice to see something finally moving Congress.l.. :D
Task Force, be more discrete when you conduct underground nuclear tests, m'kay?

I was in my local mall in Southern MD when it hit. News is saying 5.9 now. My house is a wreck, things have been knocked off of shelves, vases sharttered. Some neighbors have busted out windows. Very scary stuff on this side of the river.
In the mall, I thought it was a bomb. I litterally was just taking an orange chicken sample from a Chinese food restaurant in the mall when the ground gave out from underneath!

Been through quite a few quakes in my 60+ years; was born and raised in SaN Francisco where quakes are rather commonplace. How ever, I never experienced a major quake in the time I lived there; it was only after I moved to Los Angeles that I went through some major, destructive quakes:
Sylmar Quake 1971 (6.6)
Whittier Narrows Quake 1987 (5.9)
Big Bear Quake 1992 (6.4)
Northridge Quake 1994 (6.7)
The Northridge Quake was really destructive because it triggered off some faults that hadn't had any activity in many, many decades. Some of the faults were unknown to seismologists until the quake hit. One failut that broke loose was only about a half mile from my residence, so we felt not only the shaking from the main quake but, also, the "sub-quake" caused by the local fault giving way. Definitely an 'E' ticket ride..
Back when they still did underground testing, a particularly large test was expolded that caused tremors felt all the was to Las Vegas. News reports at the time said when the shaking hit the casinos, gamblers paused for about a split second and then carried on with their games, totally ignoring
swinging light fixtures overhead...

You have to remember that this is the biggest quake that most of if not all of the east coast has had in recorded history.:yep:

And that suits me just fine thankyouverymuch. Hurricanes are bad enough enough without earthquakes, wildfires, mudslides, volcanoes, tsunamis, boils, locusts, plague and whatever else is bothering California. :D
Well, Irene is working its way towards the South-East coast, last time I heard South Carolina was the projected impact point. Delayed intensification could make it a hefty bugger.

EDIS shows problems with two nuclear powerplants due to the earthquake, but it says it's minor (and I hope it stays that way)

Hopefully this was the big one and the few there are sheduled to come is just som small ones
Or was this just an prequake to a bigger one, that's on it's way

5.8 is not that strong probably.
In strong earthquake people would find it terrifying even just standing up as the ground moves into every direction as if an invisible giant playing with it. Standing up would be scary and requires a struggle somewhat but especially strong nerves, running however would be IMPOSSIBLE without falling all over. In strong earthquake most people would kneel down with hands holding the ground out of fear and to get a sense of bearing/balance.
Most people would think that earthquake causes mere tremors but they couldn't be more wrong as in truth the ground would literally move all over the place.
if it was just tremor, mild shaking or swinging that would mean the earthquake is not that strong or not that near or not that shallow but if the ground literally moves all over, start praying and get out as fast and as best as you can if possible.

2. should we even bother rebuilding? (rebuild the Smithsonean)

Too bad it happened during holidays(I assume the house reps are taking their break term). If not if 'the house' were to cave in, the Republicans would be most at loss. If not at worst the politicians would be snapped out of their doldrums and childish behavior. :haha:

Considering near where the epicenter was located I blame Generals Lee and Grant. They're probably at it again.

Well, Washington Monument and the National Cathedral got damaged. The former is closed indefinitely as they say, which rather sucks as I had tickets to go up the thing on Saturday morning :(
And now with Irene heading for the east coast, this weekend may get even more disasterific yet. :dead:

That's because they are all................dead!
